The thing is, i don't really mind ads in games. I never really saw the big deal. If ads mean the makers of wipeout bring more cash in to fund future projects, thats great. Although the extra 10 seconds is a bit much.
Maybe a video stream of the ad on a billboard inside the game would be more reasonable. And it would add more realism of the game.
I guess as someone who deals with ads all the time watching tv ep reruns online, this doesn't surprise me in the least, or seem like such a big deal..that, and I remember some hefty load times from PS2 games (and that was JUST the game).
if I can suck it up and deal with 30 seconds to a minute of a KY ad online, I can deal with a few extra seconds in my game loads.

They wouldn't have complained if the game shipped like that. But if you have a game that you enjoy plaing, and they alter it with a forced update to make it worse, then you've got a right to complain.
Also don't forget that it's not even the "Install this update or you'll be signed out of PSN" kind of update, this was stealth loaded in the background without your consent. Sony did the right thing by pulling them.
If they want us to watch ads, they must give us something for it. Like the free DLC. Anyway, I think in Europe it's illegal. That's why I didn't get any ads while playing.

Nice try but the framerate isn't matching on both view ports. The loading bar doesn't reach 100% on the bottom and it skips a few frames. My Wipeout has never loaded to 60% of the bar and flashed forward to the race. I call bogus, despite the fact that Sony has obliged.
Assuming you have Fury, load a Racebox Zone event on Syncopia. 5 seconds to load. The progress bar for that track jumps on me every time. That's what was used for the comparison.
We all have to send email or regular mail to the advertisers/Sony, saying we will not support there products if they invade our gaming. I buy games i want to play, i don't buy them for watching advertisements and I'm tired of the advertising industry deciding they have free rain over whatever product we buy to ad advertisements. This is also true for Sony sense they are making the money directly by allowing advertisers to invade our gaming
Yup, the only way to play Wipeout is with the awesome F-Zero tracks in the background. I can also recommend playing with Corneria (from the StarFox games) blasting out of your speakers.

Hey all, I just wanted to clear something up, particularly for the people thinking the video has been 'doctored'. This capture comparison is from a Zone event, which loads much faster than a regular race. I chose the shortest loading track I could think of to make this. Try it. Zone on Syncopia. I promise, mine loads in about 5 seconds from a cold boot. In other events, the difference could be as little as 3 or 4 seconds. I'll have a new video up later this morning showing other events.

Wow... over-react much? Sure the ads are annoying but everyone is acting like they re-skinned all the Wipeout ships with corporate logos or something.
I wouldn't call it over-reacting... this is a case of "call-it-now-before-this-stuff-gets-out-of-control-and-becomes-industry-standard". Plus people bought the game prior ad-less, and then all of a sudden, a purchased title embeds video ads that disrupt loading times... bad move Sony.
At least the REDBULL ads way in the beginning semi-worked with the techno theme - this recent stroke of Sony genius is just so so so stupidly ugly and obtrusive - A big F for you Sony - YOU SUCK.
So what happens when you're online and someone else gets the ad but you don't? Presumably you'd have to wait on your end for their ad to finish and for them to load into the game, even if you didn't have to sit through the commercial. If that's the case then you could potentially be feeling the effects every single time, depending on others in your lobby receiving the ad.
I bought WoHD before this was part of it. I feel like I've been bait & switched. I'm refusing the update until they drop this crap, and never even touching Fury.

Sounds like you haven't played the Fury expansion. The load times are extremely fast because there are almost no textures to speak of in those levels, just contrasting colours.

If they're insistent on adds, have two versions. Current standard price, or a cheaper price with ads and long load times. Let the consumer decide.

The faster RPM hard-drives improves load times
he has a faster 7200RPM drive which he put in himself vs the 5400RPM which comes default with PS3
The load time of zone Syncopia is the fastest loading map when put in comparison to advertising of other maps its barely noticeable

Nice try but the framerate isn't matching on both view ports. The loading bar doesn't reach 100% on the bottom and it skips a few frames. My Wipeout has never loaded to 60% of the bar and flashed forward to the race. I call bogus, despite the fact that Sony has obliged.

Assuming you have Fury, load a Racebox Zone event on Syncopia. 5 seconds to load. The progress bar for that track jumps on me every time. That's what was used for the comparison.

We all have to send email or regular mail to the advertisers/Sony, saying we will not support there products if they invade our gaming. I buy games i want to play, i don't buy them for watching advertisements and I'm tired of the advertising industry deciding they have free rain over whatever product we buy to ad advertisements. This is also true for Sony sense they are making the money directly by allowing advertisers to invade our gaming

I can understand advertising in a game like Wipeout, but this is ridiculous. They did it right with the Puma/Coke tracks on the PSP.

Yup, the only way to play Wipeout is with the awesome F-Zero tracks in the background. I can also recommend playing with Corneria (from the StarFox games) blasting out of your speakers.

In game advertising doesn't bother me as long it doesn't interfere with the gameplay as this is the case.
They should just replace the ads with shorter ads that fit in with the load times.

I paid for the game and the expansion pack.
Games should only ever have ads in them if....
1) They are FREE games and use advertizments to fund production.
2) If they give you a massive discount on buying the game. Eg, $5 for WipeoutHD if it contains advertisements.
They are total fuckheads.

Hey all, I just wanted to clear something up, particularly for the people thinking the video has been 'doctored'. This capture comparison is from a Zone event, which loads much faster than a regular race. I chose the shortest loading track I could think of to make this. Try it. Zone on Syncopia. I promise, mine loads in about 5 seconds from a cold boot. In other events, the difference could be as little as 3 or 4 seconds. I'll have a new video up later this morning showing other events.

So what happens when you're online and someone else gets the ad but you don't? Presumably you'd have to wait on your end for their ad to finish and for them to load into the game, even if you didn't have to sit through the commercial. If that's the case then you could potentially be feeling the effects every single time, depending on others in your lobby receiving the ad.

Sounds like you haven't played the Fury expansion. The load times are extremely fast because there are almost no textures to speak of in those levels, just contrasting colours.
