  • i am curious - if anyone was actually there for this or other shows w the wall of sound - there is a distinct "latency" in the sound - was that actually the way it sounded or is that something to do with the tape/video transferring process through the years? I actually like the sound, just wondering if i am hearing it the way it actually sounded?

much love to 214DeadHead and to all!

I play in a GD cover band here in colorado - on my channel you can check out new speedway - eyes - me and my unc

  • dat bass solo

  • /watch?v=MVzaaToSA34

I uploaded the full version for anyone who wants to see the whole song. This is by far my favorite Eyes.

    Enjoy!

  • Perfect.

  • This is my favorite Eyes.

  • omg....this is rpeatedly blowing my mind....i dont believe the way that they spread the music out and manipulated it for different feels. incredible

  • AWESOME fucking piano lick by Keith at 4:51, followed by him smoking a cigarette while playing, followed by an amazing bass solo by Phil! This video couldn't get any more amazing!

  • OMFG THIS IS SICK!

  • YOU are the song that the morning brings!

  • What's the exact date of this show?

  • @bmigs4

    10-19-1974

  • Whoever these jackasses that disliked this should be haunted in their dreams by Jerry Garcia playing this repeatedly until they do! lol

  • Alright so I uploaded the whole Eyes...

    /watch?v=MVzaaToSA34

    Enjoy!

  • Best fucking eyes ever, if you've never heard the full 18 minute version, you need to. It rips my head off

  • Comment removed

  • @ShaggyNinja where can i find it?

  • @bmigs4

I can hook you up with the whole show that has the Eyes on it if you want. At archive.org you can't stream officially released soundboards anymore, but I was also thinking of just uploading it on Youtube because like ShaggyNinja said.....it's fucking mind blowing. Easily the best version in my opinion.

    Have a Grateful Day!

  • @YoungButDeadicated that would be great! thank you.

  • Who doesn't like Grateful Dead?! I mean, even Alf said there is nothing like a GD concert!

  • jjoe 0990 you no who dont like this song deaf hungarian left handed siamese twins that were born on february twenty.ninth

  • Yo mama! ,'D

  • Who the hell disliked this song??????????

  • phil is the best,,, love this song, as all dead songs.....was nothing like a show those who were there know what i mean hippy chicks and the best doses

  • Been to the Onondaga County War Memorial MANY times when I lived in Syracuse. Unfortunately it was not to see the Dead :-(

  • Love Phil's bass solo

  • 4:38 = too much acid haha

  • this song just makes me feel goood! I really miss Dead shows :(

  • This is definately my favorite version of Eyes. It's also on disk 3 of So Many Roads box set. It's gotta be one of the grooviest versions and Phil is just awesome throughout.

  • @jeff8275 The two on Dick's Picks Vol. 28 are excellent and a couple of weeks ago, I got to see Furthur play a most magnificent Eyes in Columbus.

  • @penningtonant Ya Furthur plays a great version of this. got to see them a couple months ago in SC

  • at 10:45 look at mickey, he is sooo high. lol <3

  • @kelli112687 That would be Bill

  • Too bad this version is clipped. Out of all the countless hours of Dead listening I've undertaken, this one has always been my favorite. The date is 1974-10-19 at the Winterland in San Francisco. and the complete length is a little over 18 minutes long. The transition into the "stronger than dirt" is mind-bending! The whole thing is just dazzling....crackling with energy.

They cut the same Eyes in the Grateful Dead Movie soundtrack, which is a real shame. Super grateful to have a video though!

  • i'm wondering wtf pyrotechnics are doing at a dead show? then, i see its some jerkoff doing extremely dangerous shit with a lighter. nice

  • Sometimes we walk alone

  • What a cool, soothing song for the soul. Traveled all over California listening to this

great song. The happy go traveling stoned music, that more people should listen

too. I went to a Phil Lesh concert at the Greek Theater,a few years ago,had to be

at another concert. Drove with boyfreind, all the way from L.A. to Berkely,Ca

  • I thougth I was starting to really loose my mind, I mean Jerry was typically on the left I thought. But there he was on the right oh that was later huh.

He was on the left side of things just like me when i would trapse all over the USA following my tribe following my heart.

  • this is what it's all about

  • This is from The GD movie...1st time I saw it was in college in 1990 and the 3 dudes on the front at beginning of the song shaking their head holding on to the stage has made me laugh ever since. What a smokin' Eyes btw!!!!!!!

  • The guy at 00:16? I do that every time a Dead song begins, whether it be coming through the radio, a neighbor's window, or my own stereo. I can't help but move.

  • did phillip lesh invent the bass guitar?!

  • I like the tripping men in the front row, they remind me of the Seven Dwarves, perhaps Happy, Doc and Dopey.

  • Yes..it is touching....soothed me to know that I someday will join Jerry..

"The seeds that were silent all burst into bloom and decay,

Night comes so quiet, it's close on the heels of the day.

  • There was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert.

  • 1:44 "Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world.

The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own.

Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings.

The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own."

  • 1:53 I want that job. Hahah, he looks so happy to be doing that!

Never was a fan of this song until I heard this version. Now I can't get enough of it! Nothing better than a '74 Eyes!

  • @iSkatedashpinecone - I agree. I used to think 1977-1978 had my favorite versions of Eyes until I heard 1974 shows. Literally every version this year kicks ass, particularly the June 1974 versions. Ohh shit son...

  • @GratefulVince I still haven't heard better than New Year's 1976 @ The Cow Palace.... Maybe I grew up under a rock.

  • <3 this song means so much to me,

  • If you never got a good eyes jam at a dead show...... your bad bro

  • This is one of their best, I think.

  • PHILLLLL!!!!!

  • Classic Dead show. I appreciate all of you...This is all I have left to remember. My shows were the best days of my life, really. God Bless the Grateful Dead!

  • Bass solo FTW!

  • One of my favorites as well....this song reminds me of my husband who just joined Jerry 6.22.11. Fare You Well Chris P

  • pperris9@ymail.com---my favorite song as well, and we miss you, Chris P; and so we go...

  • @214DeadHead i pray that your husband is up there jamming with the man right now. i hope you get through his horrible time. personally, this band has gotten me through more hard times than anything else in the world.

  • WOW. Oh my god.

  • hahaha look at the lil ones dancing the feet off at 4:45. man that is what's up.

  • jazz

  • I like that Bobby's guitar can ACTUALLY be heard on this recording. He is so talented.

  • I think i have seen the movie at least 500 times and it NEVER gets old man, it just takes me back to the balcony at winterland and all the music that went down. For me this what it is all about.

  • The chick at 5:16 has hair in her armpit, that must be how they rolled back then.

  • I love the bliss on the faces of the front row acid freaks in the beginning. JOY !!!! Microdots are nice but liquid is better.

  • one man is blind alright:)

  • this song only has ONE dislike. that's quality music

  • @blackjackcannibal Haha dislikes are not making the quality music mate ;)

  • Beautiful music is the art of the prophets ♥

  • This just rocks. The changes toward the end blown it out the roof.

  • the chords for the intro are actually Emaj7 B and A

  • @HippyGroovy no its Emaj7 Amaj7 Emaj7

  • @frenchie2alfalfa actually its Emaj7 to a regular Amaj back to another Emaj7 played with a different fingering

  • @bear06460 i know, im keeping it simple

  • the chords for the intro are actually Emaj7 B and A

  • Phil... that solo during 5:30. OMG

  • anybody know the chord progression they jam in the beginning?

  • @MrJesseHarman Emaj7 Fminor A

  • first time I watched this was just when I was starting to get into the Grateful Dead deeply, and it was such a treat.....I shit you not, I had to bike ten kilometers to my buddies place to get a copy [4th gen] of a VHS video tape...but in those days, that's what we deadheads did....uphill both ways [baked]. Phil's solo is full of depth charges.

  • yeah i've watched this one more than once also!

  • Less than 60K views, and I know I've watched it at least 100 times. Too many people are missing out on the good tunes!

  • God I miss this !

  • Around 9:56, when the camera starts to zoom in on jerrys face, you can tell, that he's seeing, feeling, or thinking something that we cant possibly imagine. He's in his own trance like state at that part of the video. Thats my favorite part of this video because it shows jerry as jerry.

  • i love this dam shit man thanks

  • My best friend's son was born while this song played in the delivery room (they brought the music and a "boombox"). This song was on the radio as I headed over to the hospital. It will always remind me of Cameron and of new perspectives.

  • I needed money & destroyed my collection on ebay. I hope it's all in the hands of someone who appreciates it.

  • warms me up inside

  • I love Jerry's face at 9:53 ...soo great, producing some wonderful and beautiful music.

  • One man is blind to the world

  • @johnnycade67 and his name is Justin Beiber

  • @johnnycade67 Who cares Johnny. Fuck him as he's just another asshole on this planet of a lot of assholes.

  • your uncle is in a better place now! Hes probably having tea with jerry at this very moment.

  • This movie rocks! The mix of Winterland live footage and weird '70s tripped out animation will put a smile on your face. I highly recommend you rent in on Netflix :)

  • It's also a visceral experience for the fans as well, who might as well be a beautiful bunch. The audience here is expressing themselves freely and positively, no fights breaking out, an attentive and lively bunch. Where do you find children dancing to music in large places? Not in today's arenas!

I would have loved to attended a Dead concert, especially in the 1970s, preferably this one!

  • This is great. I never disliked the Dead, but I think watching this performance broke some new ground for me with them.

The performance is great. Everybody has a nice solo spot, namely Phil and Jerry (where do you hear a bass in its clarity hear other than at a Who gig). Donna Jean sounds great as well.

The performance is also highly disciplined regardless of the 'lifestyle' that naysayers may imply. It does go to show that the Dead sound better live than in the studio.

  • @VelvetPunk4life Right on -- that is why some of us spent a lot of time traveling, seeing tours, and following live Dead. :-) Back in the day. . . .

  • Best jam ever produced by humans at 10:09

  • You Know You Lke It!!

  • no dislikes

  • these guys are better sober honestly

  • @TheBigTent different strokes for different folks

  • woooooooooooooooooooooo so much better live and after a good marijuana joint man. I'm so stoned and that thing make em feel so good.

  • I love Billy K at 10'42" in a complete and utter trance of ratatats. Hehe. (Not to mention Jerry at 10'00".)

  • i made a painting using this name to honor their music

  • Donna was excellent in the studio. However, she often sounded like a cat that had her tail stepped on live. Maybe it was poor monitoring.

  • @grateful6595 I totally agree with you except with the tail stepping part. She sounded like a cat that was being swung around by her tail in circles.

  • @WilliamsBallMusic

So that is what caused the vibrato. I thought she was singing through a Leslie speaker. Ha!

  • Please play this at my funeral....

  • I used to be really annoyed by donna, but the more I hear her the more she grows on me. Hell if they thought she was good enough to be with them all those years thats plenty good for me

  • My uncle just died not more than an hour ago listening to this video. His name was Denis and the Grateful Dead was his favorite band and this was his favorite song so it meant a lot for it to be the last song he heard. Thanks for posting this. You made a dying man very happy.

  • @RodvinogGjorme

I d like to die hearing this also. May your uncle RIP

  • @RodvinogGjorme your uncle couldn't have listen to a better song rip

  • @RodvinogGjorme

Sorry to hear of your uncle's passing. But you sent him out in style. Now he gets to listen to Jerry (and Pig and Keith and Brent and Vince) every night, in the place this music describes. Rock in perpetuity, brothas.

  • @RodvinogGjorme very touching. id be happy if this was the last song i ever heard as well

  • @RodvinogGjorme my god..i just read your comment, sorry for the loss man may your uncle rest in peace :')

  • @RodvinogGjorme

He's jamming with Jerry now man!

  • @RodvinogGjorme That's so touching - sad and happy at the same time. I'm sorry for your loss... even if it was six months ago.

  • this song can make anyone feel good, one of their best IMO

  • wish i had a dollar for every time ive been spun watching the grateful dead movie.

  • the greatest band in all the land

  • Keith was very good, but Brent was better.

  • nothing but good feelings come from this song.... :) :)

  • if this song were a color, it would be the color of chrome reflecting sunshine

  • Damn... I sometimes forget what a beast Phil is. So, so, SO much talent in this group of folks...

  • Comment removed

  • Phil drop them bombzzz! Kids on stage @ 4:40 are frickin lucky!

  • I love the "high tech" pyrotechnics and groovy microphones.

  • donna's looks like a lost fan in the beginning of the video....oh wait she is a lost fan who wandered onto the stage

  • @schaaans29 weak.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheBiscoDiscuits

A Disco Buscuit fan would think this is weak...

  • A laughable comparison at best.

  • @TheBiscoDiscuits Laughable comments

  • Bet you didn't know:

The jam after the first chorus was so bad, they cut it from the movie. Notice the video cuts to Boots when the jam starts. It was very nice editing. The second jam in this version happens to be one of the best in the history of Eyes. Hence why they cut to it.

  • @Chickiee2 who says the jam after the 1st verse is bad? I think it's quite good. Jerry was just hard on himself like every good artist is. This is in my top 5

  • which night is this from?

  • @whatthecello42 10-19-74

  • Bottom line stated-----

THEIRS NOTHING LIKE A GRATEFUL DEAD CONCERT.., NEVER WILL BE!!!

  • phil's bass solo at 5:26. and 5:40ish. and all this mini solar systems of notes he created around these two moments.

  • @PinkFloydrulez Lesh is more!

  • @PinkFloydrulez i love it

  • feelin the loveee

  • i wish there was a love button

  • I have gigs and gigs of dead and tons of great versions of every song ever, but can someone PLEASE tell me how I can get this shit on my ipod RIGHT NOW. Thanks!

This phil ending lives up to one from the vault. HELL YA

  • @zaphodfortytoo This was 10/19 or 10/20, 1974. Can't remember. Recently was listening to the So Many Roads album and recognized that the version of Eyes on there, is from this night

  • still stand by that this was the GD's best lineup and also the best time period

  • Wrecking crew alive and well-----------------

  • Made me smile made me cry

  • I love 5:07-5:14. Smoke on, Keith.

  • @StrictlyGenteel200 My favorite member of the Dead. Long may you live Keith

  • @StrictlyGenteel200 I know what you mean, but watch Kieth at 8:32-8:42 (~);}

  • i love that little zion is dancing onstage

  • This is a really great song period

  • <3

  • HAHA the dude at 0:16!

  • @surjimster6 One of my favorite dudes in the movie, he comes up a lot.

  • oh how i love this song! my favorite dead tune. just soo good. soooo many amazing versions out there. just makes me smile!

  • My fave Dead tune.

  • Thank you Keith...for reminding me..to be grateful

  • yea but even theyre still residualy tripping
