I wouldn't say he's purposely trying to mess up :S This was a couple of years before his death and he was completely ruined by drugs, thus singing the golden oldies was his (and eddie's to be fair) only way of making some bucks and paying for the habit as he knew nothing else.

Zimmygirl David Ruffin was and is NEVER underestimated by any one who knows the group...he "was" the sound of the Temptations too bad his drug habit ended his life so early even in this video he's not in his prime, I believe his last concert

It’s not the Voice that's the problem! You need to understand music. The pace is too fast here. Check the original version, the pace was much slower. Don't forget the stars with real talent are subject to the idiosyncrasies of the Producers behind the scene. When someone else is funding the show, stars like David are all too often crucified by who holds the purse string

I'm not going to lie. They both still sound great, but they don't look happy at all. Ruffin looks like he's about to have a heart attack and Kendricks isn't smiling at all. In the Classic 5 days, that man could NEVER stop smiling.

Don't get me wrong. Other than Marvin, Ruffin was/is the most amazing singer that ever lived. And he was right on key. It's just that it made me sad because it seems like the hard life started to catch up with them in this video. And not too long after, they were both gone! I'll definitely check out more songs. Ruffin or Kendricks at their worst is ALWAYS better than the best of anyone at their best!!! REAL!

David Ruffin was AMAZING that night. He killed it earlier in the night with Statue of Fool and his MyGirl/It'sGrowing Medley. His voice was a little weak at this point, but his voice was still on key. You have to watch the whole show.

This was definitely after the reunion tour. I would guess late 80's. Ruffin does look bad, but his voice seemed to be in decent shape. I read the booklet from the Temptations box set and their longtime manager Shelley Berger said that Eddie's voice was shot by the time the reunion tour rolled around. They kept Glenn Leonard, who sang in Kendricks spot after Damon Harris left in 1975, for the reunion tour...so he probably helped cover up for that.
