Pratt gives examples of people protecting themselves against other governments. Yet for the USA it's almost impossible to be attacked by another government; their government will protect them from invasion. And what good does having guns do when most of the people who have guns use them against other civilians (rioters; criminals)... Does that improve security?

If a government really wants to attack its citizens with the army, the citizens will loose; especially in the case of the US army..

De Wehrmacht was in die tijd zo geavanceerde, wij liepen nog met mitrailleurs uit de 1ste wereld oorlog terwijl zij met tanks, bommenwerpers en paratroopers binnen kwamen walsen. And btw guns are not the only things that will protect you. You can make firebombs, explosive bombs, slingshots, spears, knifes and lots more just from household articles (atleast partially). I'm Dutch, I like van Rossem but I agree with the other guy. People should be allowed to defend themselves with fire arms against not only criminals (since the Dutch police is utterly useless in doing that) and against a possible repressing government.

The Dutch police is terrible? Crime rates are below the eu avarage with a police force only two thirds the avarage.

People are much more likely to kill themselves, their kids or their neighbours (by accident or on purpose) then to save their lives by carying guns. Even when being atacked, robbed, or threatened, weapons are more likely to get you killed then to save you.

The militia vs. government argument is ridicilous. Armed civilians are no thread to a modern army AT ALL.
