There was a small record shop in London, which was very exclusive and way before anything went mainstream. Justin, the owner, called me at 4.00 a.m. and told me, got last night a far freaking album from a Dr. John, been listening all night to it and am wasted, you better come over. That`s how I got to Dr. John.
@PassTheMarmalade1957 I bet there's people born then who never heard this song, count yourself lucky you live in an age when all this is right in front of you.
@PassTheMarmalade1957 hi there, i agree that there was awesome music back then, but there is still really good music out there today, look up Phish, moe. keller williams, umphrey's mcgee, derek trucks band, animal liberation orchestra, ben harper, dr dog, primus...i could keep going. :)
This version's better that version's better. You have to look at music like a box of chocolates -- some will like the cherry one, some the raspberry, some the crunch -- they're all good. It's just a matter of taste. I like Johnny Jenkins, Cher did a credible cover, Dr. John's is excellent but his voice for me is too thin -- that's why I like Johnny Jenkins version -- his is heavier. But on any given day I would welcome a listen to ANY version of this song. They all have something to offer.
my first concert at 13 was seeing Dr. John with Paper Steamboat, at St. Bernard Auditorium. in Chalmette, Louisiana, that was 1973..What a trip that was!
Cher?? I heard her version Laughable at best. Dr.Johns has all the soul , nuances, mood, originality and rhythm. Cher's version sounds as Botoxed as her face, stiff and plastic.
the one that shows up on Duane Allman Antholagy song by Johnny Jenkins, becomes superceded by Cher. What? But I could pick one, DRJ or JohnnyJ, or the other to be better.
OK so I finally found Cher's version elsewhere on the internet. I totally agree with Mark . "MOST" americans are too far gone to know what good music is. That being said--for being a Cher song, it was'nt a bad version. But better than
If some people keep claiming that Cher did a better version of this song/ which I find VERY HARD TO BELIEVE! ---then why have'nt any of them posted her version on You Tube. There is none to be found. ----prove it people----
Dr. John is an icon..I listened to him when I was 16..I am now 62 and I still listen..his music was and is legendary..everyone else is just trying to copy the beauty of what he gave to the world of music..
@munznyc2 saw him at House of Blues in 1997, great show, Such a Night is one of my faves, got a chance to shake hands and talk to him briefly, i'm 58 and still love the gris-gris!!!
thanks for uploading. I loaned my vinyl copy a couple of years ago and have no expectations of its return. great to find it here, The whole album is a masterpiece.

@customrez I wasn't comparing Cher to anybody. But, her version of this song from her 3614 Jackson Highway album is better than this original. Clearly, I'm not the only person who thinks so, but we're all entitled to our own opinion.
@bazmitch If you're referring to Cher's voice, today, then maybe you're right. Her version of this song is from 1969 and her voice was 100% different, back then. She sounded way better.
Either way, her version of this song is better than the original.
I had a couple fingers up in heaven, but hearin' this song again, reminded me of which way my toes needs to go's ;-) oooh yeaaah !!! Thanx for posting !!
