  • I'd just like to say that you guys make fantastic videos, and I'd like to thank you for all the work you put into them. You've helped me, and what I'm sure is thousands of other people, a tremendous amount. Keep it up!

  • @Petawawa8 Thanks so, so much!! We love to hear that they are helping you guys! Help us out by spreading the word!!

  • THIS IS NOT A SKY HOOK. It is a normal jump hook... The kareem sky hook is a bit different... he keeps his shoulder between the defender and the ball (the guy in the vid just turns around and jump shots with one hand), then raise his arm to the top with a circular motion and then just use his wrist and follows through.

  • @MatyouLoyd It seems that you obviously do not know what either the Sky Hook or the Jump Hook shots are! Sorry about that!

  • @ShotScience i can feel contempt in your words... So please tell what the sky hook and the jump hook are.. i did not want to be disrespectful.

  • @MatyouLoyd No contempt intended. just a rebuttal to you comment "THIS IS NOT A SKY HOOK." This video depicts exactly what the Sky Hook is and we will soon provide the video for the Jump Hook which are very different from each other. It's cool!

  • @ShotScience i am waiting for that video to explain what my comment mean... Thanks for answering and sorry for misunderstanding.

    -Mattia from Italy.

  • @MatyouLoyd no problem. That video will likely be a while down the road. We have so much we are trying to cover. Stay tuned!

  • The guy has both feet set and yet he moves his pivot foot... it's travelling in fiba and nba.

  • @barrikada the ball is going up into a shot as the pivot is pulled. Not a travel. Check the rule book.

  • @ShotScience regardless, i dont think you can have a foot on the floor after releasing your pivot, it would be okay if you jumped off both feet at the same time though.

  • @xcysco33 we get questions like this all the time and we went to the rule book ourselves. You can pull your pivot if you're going up into a shot, passing the ball, or dropping down the dribble.

  • Im a undersized big man and i find this move very useful but how do i get it off the right block because i can't finish with my left? or even better what are some ways (aside from practicing it) that i can improve finishing with my left?

  • @6666hellkiller We are pleased that you have the Sky Hook working for you. It usually is more difficult to shoot this or any shot left handed when you are right handed. We recommend a ton of practice to develop this move from the opposite side. PRACTICE is the answer!!!!!!

  • @6666hellkiller there are no ways besides practicing since I broke my right arm which is my strong arm so I had to shoot and do everything with my left and it took a lot of practice . And if you want to be better you have to give some of your time to improving.

  • @jayrad2011 Good call!!!

  • but dont you want to get fouled

  • @jaimelynn212121 What we want is to score and if we get fouled then that's great as well. Scoring is the first and most important goal.

  • Isn't it a travel when you move a step or two without dribbling.

  • @InfinityHardware77 If this move is executed as it is demonstrated in this video it is not a travel!

  • I get a travel despite executing this move correctly.

  • @Clutch3Ball If you executed it just like our video the official blew the call!!!!!!

  • @ShotScience I know, but I can't do anything about it. I live in the Netherlands and we play under FIBA rules, which are superstrict. Also, for example, a little jab step and a blow by afterwards will result in a travel according to them. It's madness...

  • @Clutch3Ball This is madness. We have checked the FIBA rules on travel violations in the past and they are the same as the USHS and NCAA rules. These moves are not travels unless you have not gotten the ball out of your hand before the pick-up of the pivot foot! Sorry, we often hear this same complaint about FIBA Rules. We hope you like our videos and hopefully you will find ones that will elevate your game.

  • @ShotScience No, don't get me wrong. I LOVE your videos. And I respect you guys for the passion you display for the game and your hard work. I also bought the Jump Manual Handbook.

I just wish people knew the rules better. But I won't let it bother me too much. Staying confident all the time!

  • @Clutch3Ball You got it and we hope we can help players world-Wide to get better and understand the rules.

  • @boyslearningart Sorry about that, my mobile browser pages and I accidentally commented when I didn't mean to.

  • @boyslearningart Not a problem!

  • I have literally watched this video 5 times, really wanting to sky hook like a pro, just dominate that key. Thanks for the Video, keep it up...

  • @randomaussie3 We are pleased that you have found this video useful. Work on it until you get it right and you will dominate.

  • ima bring this back

  • I want to hook it like Kareem abdul Jabbar, From far, etc. How about the Mikan drill? Any suggestions for shooting like Kareem. And we have very aggressive defense. I'm not as tall as him though. Thank you.

  • @ShotScienceFan this Sky Hook is really about a shot that Jabbar made famous! You do not have to be tall to use this move.

  • You dont square you shoulders up on a Hook Shot! its over the shoulder! thats why its you cant stop it

  • @gEo0804

This is part of the problem that this shot offers. That's why Bill Russell, Jabbar and Olajawon were so devastating twi this hot.

  • you inspire me to go out there and take some risks in the key!

  • @Mallcop4life Why not? You will become a better player.

  • Let's face it, not all ref's make the right/knowledgeable call, especially at full speed. I'd suggest a strong dribble going into the hook to be safe and if the defender can get to it then read that and quickly up-and-under.

  • @tilden02 This would apply more to the Jump Hook where you need the dribble. The Sky Hook does not need the dribble. That's what is so sweet about it!

  • Just to be clear, this move is not raveling because the foot that u step in with becomes the pivot foot, so as long as that foot is planted any other movement is legal. I don't understand it though, in the video the guy steps with his left after catching the ball, wouldnt that mean that the right foot automatically becomes the pivot foot so going in for a shot would mean a travel right? (please correct me if im wrong), I love this move but I've never risked not using a dribble before the shot.

  • @IzDaChinoMhin The right foot does become the pivot foot, however it is not a travel until that pivot foot touches the floor and the player still has the ball in his hands! This move is crazy because you do not need a dribble.

  • Why is your drop step video show the lead leg extended with the back leg being the pivot and needing a power dribble? While this shows the extended foot planted and the pivot foot is lifted without a dribble. The Sky Hook Kareem shot always showed him dribbling.

  • @consanna The Sweet thing about the Sky Hook is that a dribble is not needed! Of couse, if you want to dribble no problem.

  • @ShotScience I talked about this with a Minnesota State High School Official. I tried to explained I was shooting off my extended foot. He said absolutely as soon as your trail foot is lifted it is traveling.

  • @consanna Well there is NO QUESTION that it is not a travel if executed as it is in our video! If it were then all layups would be a violation as well!!! He must not know exactly what the move looks like. This move made Abdul Jabbar the most famous player to ever use the shot!

  • Can i perform this by jumping wif my both feet ???

  • @Gunso5 When you use both feet it is called a "Jump Hook" and you must lead in with a dribble. No dribble is necessary in the Shy Hook.

  • it's travelling. i did it at my basketball game and it was called travelling. sucks mate

  • @ShadowLord234 If you executed the Sky Hook as it is demonstrated in our video, the official who called it is mistaken. It is not and never has been a "Travel." If so, Jabbar, and all the other Sky Hookers were wrong as well mate! If both feet are set and you pick up the left one as you turn to the basket, it can only be a travel if your hand is still in contact with the ball when that pivot foot touches the floor. If you slide the pivot foot as you turn then that can be called a travel.

  • 0:25 ITS TRAVELING!!!!!!!!!

  • @griffonvendeen nope!

  • Hey shot science I'm 13yrs old about 6'1 200lbs what position do u think I should be playing?? And would this be an effective move for me??

  • @Cmilan2513 we can't really say because we've never seen you play. You sound like you're a pretty big guy for your age, so maybe a 4 or 5, but it really depends on your play and your team's needs.

  • @Cmilan2513 You should be a center and should master the post

  • hi shotscience! thank you for teaching this skill! been searching for one that explains so well like this. i have a few questions here, can we do this from far range of the board? does the power to hook the ball came from the arm or the hands to the wrist? thank you again

  • @omegzero45 This shot is most effective within 8' and in. The power comes from essentially the wrist as your shot is close in.

  • I would love to see more videos on different types of post moves!

  • @fantasybc Coming up soon!

  • Hello Shot Science~ The sky hook move is good and all.. but assuming my opponent is using this move, how can I defend against this move when you said and I quote "when performed correctly, this move is almost impossible to stop".. So, what are the possible ways to stop this move effectively?

  • @KokHorng91 Well, the obvious answer to your question is this: "Don't let them catch the ball in the first place. You may need to front them, but do not allow them to catch the ball in their comfort zone.

  • old school rulesXD!

  • @drbloodbath98 Sometimes it does!!!!!

  • Correction of myself "r some better than others"

  • @CantBeTchd OK!!

  • what do you think about the high post? any specific moves for the high post cuz i am a smaller player who is proboly best at defense. i have found posting up ppl around my size (maybe 15lbs. heavier and 4 inches taller) an effective way to score. i havent been able to find the best or quickest way to get off my jump shot when i have my back to the basket? should i work on a longer hook shot, drive like melo, or face up then jump shoot? i knw lots of stuff is situational but is r bttr than others

  • @CantBeTchd It sounds like you you have a pretty good idea how to attack the defenders. We will offer some ideas on this in the Spring.

  • Coach, your videos have helped improve my game so much. I regulary use offensive moves like 'the diamond'. I am looking forward to more post move videos to help me improve that area of my game. May I suggest a faceup-to-drive or up-and-under stepthrough instructional? Thanks so much!

  • @DSchaub24 These are in our plans for the near future. It is tough to get so much up for all positions. Please stay tuned for them.

  • I used to make this shot! Till I got shot with an arrow in my knee!

  • @SuperBigzBoy WOW!!! Sorry to hear this. Can you go the other way and use the same move?

  • That's a TRAVEL! and im a FIBA ref

  • @panzzer2 if you're having issues with this, then throw a dribble down. The rules, both international and NCAA, state that this is completely legal. We've never seen anyone called on this in either setting when they've done it correctly.

  • @panzzer2 FIBA ref or not, this is not a travel. It was not a travel in 1956, 1976, 1996 nor is it today. Maybe check your own rulebook. It would become a travel only if the right foot in this video were to touch the floor before the release of the basketball. Bill Russell. George Mikan and Jabbar used exactly this footwork on this particular shot. Nuff said!!!

  • @panzzer2 No one ques

  • @panzzer2 How dare you question the coach's wisdom....shame on you ;(

  • @itsdanny206 Thanks for your support, but we have no problem with his point of view even if we do not agree!

  • lebron is the only one traveling in this video

  • @PImmaluffelum This is a very common thing for LeBron and he never seems to get called for it!

  • Isn't that travel my coach says it is?

  • @Crazyjuicetoday Well, without any dis-respect, your coach is incorrect. This IS NOT a travel!!!!!

  • @ShotScience dat is definately travel!!!!

  • @KAYODE15SOLOMON By rule, it is not a travel!

  • i'm 5'5 player , 14 years of age, i often use a hook shot when someone taller than me guards me but i think its a different shot compared to this, should i switch to use this move instead of my old one?

  • @ivandayao400 Use whatever shot is the most productive for you. Scoring is the name of the game.

  • @ShotScience Hey coach! The Mikan drill will improve my skyhook right? But I can't seem to perform the Mikan drill because when i'm using my left hand, it doesn't feel right

  • @khoozzz87 The only reason that it doesn't feel right is because you probably do not work enough on your weak hand. Let's get busy today and work on that hand as much as we work on the strong hand!!!!

  • @ShotScience But how?

  • I am 5'6 and im 14 do you think that this move would be good against people about 2 or 3 inches taller than me?

  • @golddragon134 Yes, very much so!

  • im 6'1 150lbs and im 14 do u think thats a good size for power forward at my age?

  • Comment removed

  • @princeofrance That is about average for your age and you should be growing for another two to three years.

  • my height is 6 foot and i am 14 years old i am good 3 point shooter and mid range can i play forward or i should play guard?

  • @kobe1357986 Well the truth of the matter is that you will probably have a coach who will make that decision for you. Sorry, but they are the ones who place you in which position.

  • todays deadliest is dirk nowitzki's fadeaway :))

  • @eldavidthe2nd You very well could be right on this one!!!

  • Have you got any skyhook drills for me? I absolutely love this shot and I'm trying to get good at it so I can use it in-game. Thanks guys

  • @HD6314 Well, you should be able to set up drills for this move. It is an awesome move and thank you.

  • @ShotScience Haha yeah I know, I can. Just checking if there were any good well-known skyhook specific drills, it's all good I'll make some up. Thanks :)

  • Shot science I have noticed that ianburns123 has been trolling u alot. Just block him or ignore him so u wont be bothered with his stubborn and fresh comments

  • @brawlmaster234 Thanks for your concern, but we will let him go on unless he becomes really pout of line. Thanks for your concern and we appreciate your support.

  • Thank you very much for the video! Could you explain what you should do if the post is double teamed? I understand you could pass it out, but is there a post move you could do to get past the defenders?

  • @aeragog When you are double-teamed in the post there is no real moves to counter-act this unless you are just a "Beast!" Best idea is look for the man left open by the "Double-teamer." This will take away the double team pretty quick because that person will have open shots. Most important do not try to force shots against the double team.

  • @ShotScience I remember when I tried to use this move, but didn't seal the defender in. It made a huge difference actually sealing the guy with the inside foot, and when your sky hook is short (for sone reason, it should t be) you will have perfect rebounding position. While I'm tall and lengthy, this is the perfect move if you are not particularly strong (as I'm not) and are more of a shooting big man than a post up big man.

  • @hummusman2 This sounds like a nice adaptation for your game.

  • IS THIS TRAVELING?

  • @ianburns123 No it is NOT TRAVELING!

  • @ianburns123 NO, it is NOT TRAVELING!!!!

  • -_- travel sky hook

  • @theyjonkedme No sorry! There is not a travel here!

  • @ShottScience you can watch our Vertical Jump videos though

  • @ShottScience Sorry, the slam dunk is not in our plans.

  • @ShottScience This shot works for all size players!

  • Im a 10th grader in highschool and i was really good in the low post psition averaging about 25-30 points a game but now i learned the sky hook and im avraging about 40-50 points a game thanks

  • @ItsMyGameProductions WOW!! That is awesome.

  • @ItsMyGameProductions that's how much I score to

  • @jayrad2011 This is great to see that you can score so well.

  • kareems skyhook or dirks fadeaway.

  • @jacobboy5 both deadly ;-)

  • hey coach, wen i play ball i always cant pass by fast players and if i do past them i always get blocked by taller players, i am a 5'9 player so im not that tall wat can i do?

  • @chisgangster Go to our YT channel and go over ALL OF OUR ATTACK videos, Hip-to-Hip attack, Long One-n-One for answers to your problems of getting bye the defenders. Check out "Finishes at the Rim" for dealing with the bigger players at the basket.

  • I think that is a good guide for a hook but this isn't the sky hook Kareem used in LA or the Bucks. Kareem is more on a side ward angle and extends his arm upwards using only his wrist to "hook" the ball.

  • @GarchompNation This is the Sky Hook, but when Kareem did it, he was just so long that it's hard to translate onto a smaller body. Still the fundamentals are all the same and it is just as tough to stop!

  • @shotscience thanks some of the guys in the team but im gonna use it anyway

  • @HipHopLives95 Learn it well and it will be good for you!! Let us know how it goes for you and the shot.

  • hey coach guys at my high school team say it's travelling and i have to jump off two feet. does this have anything with the fact that in the nba travelling happens because i live in europe

  • @HipHopLives95 Well, the FIBA rules vary very little on how you can use your feet on this or any other shot from the NBA, NCCA, NHS rules. As you see this demonstrated in the video is absolutely "NOT A TRAVEL." Your team is really mistaken on this one. Who is the team ? The team members, the coach, who because they are off-base here?

  • Hi coach, this is a great video. However do you have any videos or tips on shooting floaters? I am a fairly short player and I need help with scoring more baskets. Thanks

  • @9Will4 Well, we do not believe that you answer here is shooting floaters. Please review our video "Finishes at the Rim" for better ways to beat the bigger defenders at the hoop.

  • hey coach i watched all your vids but i need your help ...you have no video on hand correlation on the ball mostly the off hand do my thumbs make a y or a t do i keep the off hand elbow in or out like larry bird ...please help ive been struggling for years not knowing what to do i watch everyones mechanics from stephen curry pete maravich dirk everyone but there all so different and nothing works for me ..thanks coach..

  • @pandemik1 The Assist Hand (off-hand) does just that. It assists in controlling the ball as we get ready to shoot it. The "y" and the "T" thing is probably over-stated. Just remember to keep the hand on the side of the ball for control and make sure that it is a soft touch. The elbow can be what ever you feel comfortable with and everyone is a little different. Mostly, do not allow the "THUMB" of this hand to affect your shot. It usually creates a sideways rotation on the ball. Not Good!

  • Thanks a lot!

Thanks to you I am almost master on this!!

  • @AlexanderIIITheGreat Keep workin on it and you will be "The Master."

  • Hey!!!I love this channel!!

  • @ngqiming Thanks so much for your very much appreciated comment. Stay tuned for more BB videos.

  • coach do you need to dribble before taking two steps for a layup? so say I get the ball, can I not dribble and take two steps to the basket for a layup? or would I need to power dribble or something first

  • @guitarpianist Look at it like this. You do not really get two steps. When you pick up the dribble, you usually establish a take of foot. As soon as that foot touches the floor again and you still have the ball in your control, that is a travel. The NBA, however, overlooks the rule a lot and many of the Pros get those two steps or more without a call.

  • my release is still crap....

  • @9727417 Keep working on it. It will come around.

  • hey coach i play at the guard position can i still use the sky hook as part of my repertoire

  • @pm3975 Sure, but you need to be within about 10 feet to be effective.

  • How can I improve my free throw shooting? I can't get a lot of power behind my shot unless I jump.

  • @AmandaRowSupporter See our video "Make Three Pointers - Get Your Legs Into It". Even though you are shooting free throws the use of the legs is the same. Check it out.

  • Well dont forget you have to get that deep post position first.......i.e. ....cough cough Brittney Griner........if she developed a Kareem sky hook she would be unstoppable.

  • @youontwantnonnadis You are correct on both counts!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • What drills can I do to get better at doing the skyhook?

  • @INivekkk Just break the move down as we do and work on the pieces. Then work on all the elements as one "Great Move." Keep us up to speed on your development of the shot.

  • @ShotScience Thanks for replying back. I can pretty much do everything , I just need a drill to help me get use to doing it.

  • @INivekkk Just break the move down!

  • Hey coach could you make a video of how to do The Floater I've seen is a very effective shot but isn't as easy as it seems to be.

  • @Denielgunz You are very correct on your comment on it's difficulty. We plan to do a video on this, but not real soon.

  • @ShotScience Is the Skyhook a good idea to use on a drive or just a post up?

  • @Noobykins We have seen Magic Johnson use it on drives.

  • Wow, great video Shot Science! I'm gonna start using this right away! I have always tried to do the skyhool but have never executed it properly. Because of this video, we'll start seeing some fresh college recruits in the NBA in 10 years using this shot ;)

  • @KineCinemaMedia This would be very cool to see it make a return to the game. Thanks for your nice comment.

  • I miss this....point your toe towards the other side to the other side line

  • @klaasjan111 Yes, toward the opposite sideline or lane line as you turn into the shot. Review the video for where to go.

  • Nots not a travel, Its assuming you havn't established a pivot foot yet, so when he takes the first step, it becomes his pivot foot, then jumps off that foot at the end. Making it no differnt than a catch and jump shot type play.

  • @0nst Okay!!! There you have it! Great.

  • @0nst Great!!! You are on it. Thanks for your comment.

  • That's not a sky hook that kid's showing...that's a jump-hook, and a pretty ugly one at that.

  • @mwhitten77 exactly I do mine why more better can you see If I do it correctly on my video go to my site and look to the very first video and you will see it thx

  • I actually used this I was a kid

Im short this allowed me to score inside

    Ima a 3point shooter though

  • @RJxNeLA This is a shot that anyone can use. Magic Johnson was awesome as a point guard who could shoot the hook shot.

  • nose elbow relationship!!! once i broke a nose of a player:P and we lost the game lol btw 10x

  • @TheKingJohnnyG We are sure that the nose was not on purpose. We use this terminology to re-enforce getting that arm up to protect the ball.
