I'm curious as to why you carved the neck with a volute on the back? Gibson didn't start doing that till the Norlin ownership years, which are roughly 69-86
Nice job! Great use of jigs and templates. Guitar building presents a huge amount of problem solving and it must be very satisfying for you to see the whole thing pan out. Thats an awesome effort for year 12! Bet it sounds great. Excellent!
hey i'm going to make mine but i need the body measures you know how thick, long, size of the horns and all that stuff, could you pm me with the measures please ^^
be careful posting that here man. I'll say good job but there are a lot of people that think you should be paying gibson royalties and that I'm a "socialist" for personally hoping for the downfall of gibson because what they charge for what you get is incredibly disproportionate. but any way you did a great job and keep making them so people can buy yours and not gibson :) I can't wait for the comments from this :) lets hear em!
@pteradactylhippo You can make whatever you want. No copyright can tell you otherwise. However he can not sell this claiming it is a Gibson. Or claim it is built to exact Gibson specs, or for that matter even call it an SG in a sale. As long as he doesn't associate it in any way with a gibson in a sale he is breaking no laws.
Damn.... what a great version of this song....For those who rocked that song we salute you.... damn...and also the masterpiece build is great.. thank u for posting both...
Looks slightly off from the Gibson. The spot between the neck pickup and the neck, I mean. Still, it looks real nice. The fact that it's hand made by yourself is flippin' cool. How does it play? I'm curious to have a listen.
@Rafterman123 of this I am aware. I just said (or rather, meant) something looks off in that general area. Can't quite place my finger on what it is either, if there even IS anything wrong.
That's one fine piece of craftsmanship buddy! We wonder sometimes why guitars can cost so much and then you see how much work actually goes into making one! Nice going man!
thats really cool, but you are meant to have EMG 2 grade pickups, and the pickguard was too high, but still, job well done, no one will notice the pickup changes.
Really impressive work..best not refer to it as a Gibson though, just incase!! P.s It`s better made than my `71 Gibson SB300 bass guitar,at least you got the neck angle correct!! :p
i actually own an SG and i must tell you that your headstock is a bit off, it looks a bit longer and thinner than the real thing, but good job though, i could never do that :D
I like your guitar but "build a gibson sg" ...only gibson build "gibson SG's" ...your's is a benny SG ..... a lovely guitar but the title is misleading to say the least.....
you know what i'm just going to collect money to buy one.... also nice work but why 21 frets come on put at least 22 it could be better and easier for you to play when you have 24 frets
That's amazing that you could do something like that. So, the headstock is a block of wood that's glued onto the neck before the whole thing is cut out? What keeps it from breaking off?? I've always wondered about that.
@audiotrax2000 When the glue surface is angeled like on the head stock the glue surface is quit big... So it will hold. In guitar that I made the head stock is about 17mm thick but becouse the head stock is angled the actual glue surface is about 80mm
Considering that the result is a product (unique) wich cost is (at least) 2 or 3 times the price of the original gibson (time , materials, main d´oeuvre): if there was a gibson logo on the headstock , could it be considered as a fake???or customshop???LOL
HE HAS LIKE 4 -5 OF THEM HE MADE AT ONCE...and is selling a couple SG' he made also thier Awesome so I know if he can build them exactly same and make a few bucks selling them for 850-900 finished gibson is makeing a killing on us all every day I bought a brand new 2009 Traditional in light burst for 2300+ change from AMS' & this 59' replica is every bit as good of a build but sounds thicker warmer and feel better so there ya go!
and like i said about any finish you could want bulls-eye camo, bursts correct headstocks ect.. and other than the higher end pickups EMGS or 57 Classics that are 200 - 300 bucks alone but have the guitar done and sell it for the price of a nice EPIPHONE CUSTOM OUT THE DOOR... I BOUGHT A 59 LES PAUL REPLICA FROM HIM A FEW MONTHS BACK i WATCHED HIM DO MOST THE BUILDING ROUTING SANDING ECT......MYSELF HE HAS A SMALL BUILDING / WOOD SHOP WITH ROUTERS & A CNC MACHINE 59 SCHEMATIC PAID $850 4 IT!!!!
I honestly see nothing wrong with buying a copy / replica ! but however I do not think anyone should get ripped off ..i mean someone buying a copy / replica / knock-off / clone or being sold one as an original !!! with that being said my best friend is a Luther or Guitar builder and can build quality replica's of any Les Paul / Les Paul Custom with ONE PIECE NECKS no scarf joints and solid flamed maple tops and real mahogany body's Real ebony fret boards with fret and nibs just like a Gib-sun
was this your first time building a neck, because i want to try and build a neck, but i dont think i'll be able to do it and yours turned out buitiful
i'll stick to my grecos from Japan there awesome i have an all black and cream greco/gibson copy standard that plays real well it's a 1979 my friend has the same guitar Only a real gibson and it's the same thing the Only differance is the logo mine says greco and his says gibson lol i love greco's gibsons cost too much i mean i Can afford it but i don't want to spend $3000.00 for a real One that won't play right i Don't like them new i like them well used and broken in lol
Did you look online somewhere for the plan for this? If so, where did you find it? I've been wanting to build my own guitar for a long time now, and that's just amazing looking!

That is amazing work! I am 15 and I am going to start on making an SG soon. I already have the neck, and hardware. I just need to plan out how I'm going to shape the body. What did you use to form the contours on the sides? And how did you center and align the pickup cavities and bridge? I'm going to be using a hard tailed bridge, so it's not completely like a Gibson, but it's all I have. Plus I am going to use two single coils with a tone and volume knob.
Wow man, that is an awesome looking axe. Nice job! I have a really ambitious idea for the SG style, I just wish I had the time, money and resources, not to mention skill that you have to make my own SG. Nice job again.
