It is not a religious symbol, it is a religious requirement. There is a difference! Muslims wear veils because they have a clothing-style where they only show their face and hands when they have hit puberty. To tell a veiled muslim woman to take off her veil is like telling a Westernized woman to take off her bra.. Meaning she would feel immodest. That is just cruel!
This is just wrong, I'm a christian and I cover, though my veil is a bit different, and I wear a cross also. So glad I don't live in France. The degree to which a woman takes her own modesty is in my opinion a measure of her espect for herself and for God. More importantly it's a matter of personal concience and that some people, even some governments, refuse to accept us (those of us who veil) is disgusting

It's disturbing to think humans accept a more sexually revealing person than a person who is more self respecting and covered up. I wish we could seriously ditch our instinct to judge people by their appearance and sexual attractiveness and accept a person based on who they are as a person, not physically. But the fact that laws in western countries are going AGAINST that is scary. In my country (Canada) they recently made it illegal to wear Niqab at citizenship ceremony. It makes me furious.
what i don't understand is that no one questions a girl wearing a bikini in public but everyone has to question a girl completely covering herself when the girl in the bikini is probably more pressurized by society to dress that way than the girl in the hijab is by her family i think these things are a personal choice and should be respected

@vitovito123 They aren't actually - these protests are carried out by Muslims who choose to live in secular Western Europe. They are in direct opposition to Secularism (a separation of state and religion) which is part of our history and came as a result of the European Enlightenment. Education and Religion should be completley seperate. In France a Jew can't wear a skullcap to school and a Christian can't wear a cross to school so i don't see why a muslim should be able to wear a headscarf. The Quran does not actually say kill, kill, kill. It's not much different from the parables of the New Testament & it gives advice for how to live.

It is my personal freedom to choose to cover my hair. That does not harm you, so you cannot force me to do otherwise. And that certainly would not make me any less french than you, because my nationality and citizenship is not defined by my dress, it is defined by something more than that.

They are in direct opposition to Secularism (a separation of state and religion) which is part of our history and came as a result of the European Enlightenment. I am an American, so obviously my views are influenced by the American values I grew up with. Perhaps, I don't understand the French POV, however I don't see how this anything but bigotry. Does anyone know if other religious symbols, such as a cross, are allowed to be displayed on a person in school? It is also important to realized that there is a difference between having a secular government, and trying to enforce (by ostracizing, in this case) secularism in all aspects of society.

If you refuse to do so, because of personal beliefs, then you have no right to complain. France, like majority of Europe, is originally Christian, and if they are not allowing Christian symbols, then don't expect them to allow Muslim ones.

I believe that the issue with Islam going to counties outside of it’s origan is that it is not just a faith it’s also a culture within itself and there for not universal. If you can’t speared the faith without telling people how to dress then you are asking people to adopt another person’s way of life. @vibarva I believe I can answer that-and I might add, I am a Catholic (last I looked there was no rule saying I couldn't go down to the library and read.) The Quran does not actually say kill, kill, kill. It's not much different from the parables of the New Testament & it gives advice for how to live.

@vibarva I don't see how a hijab harms anyone. And as a religion or a philosophy, it is a right, which cannot be changed unless it violates the rights of others. It is my personal freedom to choose to cover my hair. That does not harm you, so you cannot force me to do otherwise. And that certainly would not make me any less french than you, because my nationality and citizenship is not defined by my dress, it is defined by something more than that.

there are reasons why our religions ask and teach us to perform our duties and obligations. think on the positives side especially on hygiene factors and health. covering our head can protect us from the dust, and also protect from UV. i believe there are no religion that convey bad influence and ideas towards its followers. it just that some of followers doesn't perform their duties and too obsessed of the fun and entertainment rather than figuring out the future of their own and families...
