I have only this to say about (in my opinion) the GREATEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER EVER
and the original & only L.T. Just imagine how much this man could command in todays game. He would and should get QB money EASY. He'd be the only player in the League to do it too. That idiot, Mel Kiper, keeps calling all these wannabe's the NEXT L.T. yet one after the other they ALL FAIL.
#56 is the ALI of the NFL. Go NY G-Men in Super Bowl XLVI
The Lombardi (which should be The Parcels) trophy is coming back to NY
I don't know if anyone else has seen the "Best Linebacker Corps" on NFL Network but I would like to smack that Madden idiot (some Pittsburgh AM Radio guy) when he says "LT was only a pass rusher". That is the most idiotic statement I have heard about LT. LT could play the run like nobody else as well. That is why teams knew they had to run at LT to have a chance after they learned to run away from him was not effective because he would chase it down. Apparently expert Madden doesn't know.
I'd be more afraid of LT than Butkus. Why? I'd rather get hit by someone who plays pissed off all the time than someone who's running around high all the time and snapping peoples legs.
@ParisLondonRoma I have two words for you. Dick Butkus. Butkus inspired such fear that entire lines were designed with the sole purpose of stopping him. There were men who refused to play against Butkus.
Lawrence Taylor the ONLY defensive player ever to win NFL MVP (1986). Not Butkus. Not Ray Lewis. Not Deion. Not Ronnie Lott. Not Deacon. Not Reggie White. Not Woodson. Rod or Charles. Lawrence Taylor the ONLY player ever to win Defensive Player of the Year THREE TIMES.
@TheLuscious Alan Page (1971) also won NFL MVP. He was the first defensive player to do so. Page and Taylor are still the only 2 defensive players who've won that award.
Redoubtable - someone to be feared and avoided = Lawrence Taylor. Anybody that doesn't give it up to LT as the greatest/best defensive player of all time has no idea what they are talking about. Completely unstoppable and ferocious. Coke, clean he made QBs pee on themselves and worse. Devout Cowboys fan but I loved watching LT play every week. Only the Achilles stopped him. And he could do everything: play the run, pass defend and munch QBs. I never saw fear in him. Could play in any era.
Lawrence Taylor is the Greatest Defensive Player of All Time, period. A devout Dallas Cowboys fan of 34 years is writing this. He completely rewrote and transcended how to play outside linebacker. Completely unstoppable there are legends to this day of LT hitting QBs that they pissed on themselves. The most feared defensive player ever. Ask Theismann. Ask Ron Jaworski. I loved watching him play even if it was for the hated Giants. LT and Jim Brown the two most perfect football players ever.
@TheLuscious amen to that. Giant fan here. I appreciate a Dallas fan setting the record straight. As for me when I was growing up I watched Roger Staubach torch us for years. Another great myth are the comments I read on YouTube "LT was predominantly a rush the QB LB, he wasn't a force against the run. That statement is total bull. He was a force against the run which is why teams learned instead of running away from him the only chance you had was to run at him.
@jmg4314 I was at the Superdome for the game he separated his shoulder in. We still couldn't stop him. It was the most incredible defensive performance I've ever witnessed in person, and I watched the Saints Dome Patrol live during their heyday. I was the happiest person alive when Rickey Jackson was elected to the HOF,but I'll be the first to admit LT was on a different level. Taylor could have been an All Pro Cb if he chose that position. He was that athletic.
@kingfish4242 yes I remember that game and he was incredible. I love an unbiased football fan like yourself.I lived in N.O. in 1984-85 and I remember Ricky Jackson drafted out of U. of Pittsburgh. He was a beast both physically and the way he played. Also, the Saints had one of the best LB corps ever with Jackson, Swilling,Johnson, Mils.
@jmg4314 Thanks my friend. I am just too old for that kiddy smack that seems to plague the internet. If you watch the game with an open mind and discuss things rationally with opposing fans, you can learn something. Knowledge is power ;) One more thing about that game. The saints had a RB named Reuben Mayes who ran a 4.3 forty and was on the verge of stardom before a series of achilles injuries. In the 1st quarter,he ran a reverse and Taylor chased him down from behind before he hit the corner.
@kingfish4242 It was the opposite corner and was running away from Taylor. Darrell Green and Deion Sanders might have been the only defensive players in the league faster than Taylor, but they were also Cornerbacks. It was just an incredible play and all I could do was tip my cap to him.
L.T. is the greatest defensive player EVER despite using cocaine on a regular basis during his prime and even admitting that he couldn't focus in practice sometimes because he was thinking about drugs.
I can't imagine what he would he would have done with Rice's work ethic.
Its a shame we couldn't be frozen in time in that era. LT dominated the football field in a time when Barry Sanders,Jerry Rice,Joe Montana, and a hundred of other Hall of Famers played. Think about this for a second, LT won the NFL MVP when Joe Montana was in his prime and won the 3 Defensive Player of the Year playing against all those greats in 12 years .Rey Lewis won 2 Defensive Player of the year awards in 15 years and counting. It's like comparing Reggie Miller to Micheal Jordan....

QB's are bigger and stronger now, but LT's one-handed jersey tackles must indicate insane strength-you don't see that much
I love LT but I didnt see many impact hits. I hit is different than a tackle or sack. Ronnie Lott and Chuck Cecil are more of a hitter. You have to explode and launch yourself into someone like a missile to really have a great hit.
@7thXignG Yes LT was one of the greatest Linebackers ever, I didnt get to watch many Giant games so If some Giants fans can show me some of LT's hits on wide recievers and runningbacks cuz 99% of the tackles we see are on QB's. @buckwheat40 he was used like a 3-4 OLB is today... straight pass rush... think terrell suggs of baltimore or clay mathews from greenbay... james harrison from the steelers
@buckwheat40 You are the dumbest NFL fan of all time. Been ride or die Cowboys fan for the last 34 years and I loved watching LT play. He is widely considered to be the greatest DEFENSIVE player in NFL history. When you say one of it just shows how stupid you are. Ask Butkus. Ask everybody LT played with. He completely transcended the game. And he was a monster. You talk that shit but I bet if LT knocked the shit out of you, your dumb opinion would changed with the quickness. FOOL
@TheLuscious hey dipshit, you dont know me, I was a pretty good football player I didnt play in the NFL but If I ever played a football game against you I'm sure I would knock your head off! BITCH!
@DatPicksburghGuy You are the dumbest NFL fan ever. Ride or die Cowboys fan for 34 years and LT has no peer. The best defensive NFL player EVER. Want proof? How many NFL players have ever won NFL MVP? ONE. Lawrence Taylor. How many NFL defensive players have won NFL Defensive player of the year 3 times? ONE. Lawrence Taylor. Before you talk out of your ass, please do some research and know what the fuck you talking about. Unlike you, I watched him wreak havoc for 13 years.
broke my femur labor day weekend, playing football on the beach with some friends... shoula worn pads.
when you break something like the femur or the fibula or any other big leg bone, you could hear it a hundred feet away. I was looking down when it broke, it was sickening, then it started hurting.
scrolled thru the comments and a couple people got it right:
LT is the best defensive player all-time
the most feared as far as impacting the game and fucking up your offense
but fear as far hitting, Butkus really is #1-for one thing he had today's size playing against players 50 years ago. For another thing, he could and did get away with more, and those littler guys knew it
BTW LT was the best, but he had help-the best LB crew ever, Carson, Reasons, LT, Pepper Johnson? good lord
@PorkFrog You name his linebacking corp, and somehow forget Carl Banks? How dare you. Carl Banks was a starter when they had their BEST linebacking corp, LT, Carson, Banks...
@crx122 Yer right-I knew I was missing one-I threw Pepper in there but he was a rookie in 86 and not a full time starter till 87, but Banks was the one escaped me
Tho I'll always remember how good the NFC was then-SF, NYG, Skins, Bears-not just good, historically so. Vikes and Rams as an honorable mention
mentioned LT's team because sometimes people forget - team game
LT woulda stood out on any team, but he is remembered as the greatest because of how good the defensive team he played on was
@PorkFrog That's too true, and just saying, the NFL has NEVER had a linebacking corp as dominant as the Giants had since that time. LT was able to do what he did because Carson was about as tough up the middle as they come, and Banks was incredibly athletic and tremendous on the goal line (so was Carson for that matter.) When you throw in Reasons to the bunch, it just made them unstoppable. Their backup was another premier player, doesn't get better than that. It was NFC dominance then...
@Nautilus1972 I can always tell when someone has no knowledge of Football, and is just a parrot of the media hype they've heard. If you truly believe the 85 Bears had the best LB corp, you're so full of shit. NONE of their linebackers had any pass coverage ability, if they didn't get to the QB, it was over. Did you see what the Dolphins did to them in 85? Those LBs were one dimensional. To be great you need longevity, with the West Coast Offense, they fizzled out pretty much overnight. Thanks
@Nautilus1972 In the future, it's best to just remain silent if you don't know what you're talking about. When you talk about the Giants, who won multiple SB's and had a dominating linebacking corp for years, and then try to say the Bears LB's were better, you just sound stupid. They were successful for ONE YEAR, before the West Coast Offense exposed how poor their linebackers were in pass coverage. They did NOTHING after that, and were nowhere near as effective. One dimensional = the best? NO
@crx122 And you know what you're talking about? The Giants won MULTIPLE super bowls? That team won ONE super bowl. And yes, the BEars were the best single season defense ever. Only defense ever to shut out their opponents in the playoffs nad then absolutely destroy a high octane offense in the SB. Will never happen again. Complete dominance no one ever came close to repeating. Check yourself.
@crx122 LT was as effective as he was because he was surrounded by great LBs. Yes, he was awesome, no he wasn't the best. ANd Butkus was never taking underage girls into hotel rooms and smoking crack with them either.
@Nautilus1972 I completely disagree. LT was effective because of his freakish athleticism. There was no blocking scheme in place to stop an OLB who could do what he did. Conventional wisdom held that the running back took care of blitzing linebackers, which well you know didn't work. He would have been a dominant pass rusher anywhere, just happened to wind up in the perfect situation. Also who cares about his off the field activity? We are talking about his skill as a FOOTBALL PLAYER.
@crx122 Nautilus is the stupidest football fan EVER. A fact. I watched LT for 14 years and he as a beast senior year at North Carolina and changed everything about playing LB when he got to the NFL. First LB to run down the line with his 4.4. speed. Nobody ran at LT. LT was the reason Joe Gibbs came up with two and three tight end offenses. LT could do everything including when called for pass cover. See 98 yard INT return for TD against Detroit. Tomahawk chop is all LT. Unstoppable.
@Nautilus1972 : A Drug cheat? Mr. Second City, please explain. Butkis was good for the time he played. LT was the best in any generation. The only thing Butkis was better than LT in was acting...and not by that much at that.
@HallWayGang Let's not get crazy. Stop jerking off and calm down. There was a man name Dick Butkus who was 'pretty damm good'! So were Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell and a host of others. Besides, LT could not play the run as good as others. He was primarily a pass-rusher. So, I would suggest you do better research and caaaalm dooowwwn!.
@92463mike ahahahahaha. what a bafoon. "LT could not play the run" Listen up, and listen up real good. LT was the most complete LB EVER. Butkus would even tell you that! Butkus was slow as molasses! dont ever compare him to LT you clown. this is the last time i respond to ppl who lack football knowledge.
LT was a great player but all you twats that claim he "changed" the position can go suck a dick. Nobody wanted him to change anything. The NFL was already run by little girls by the time he played. The real men had long since retired.
@rrhynes LT can play a circle around Butkus. Bring all the real men that you say have retired and play with todays players? Why don't all you people that love the old timers watch how fast these guys move today and get a grip on reality. If the nfl was ran by a bunch of little girls like you say then you should be playing nfl. I love watching the older era, but try to compare players from back then to now.
@kojak235 Of course. Nobody is doubting that. However, some of the new players wouldn't handle the old NFL so well either. By comparison , they're spoiled and tended to in a way that is almost sickening. They get the best care, food, etc. They are faster, perhaps, but tougher no. Smarter, only because they have the luxury of watching the past and evolving with the present. So, it's impossible to compar. However, the NFL is run by pansies today. There is no doubt about that. Too many bs rules.
it shows you the power that he has? a 100 lb girl could have fallen on theisman and had it been the same angle of pressure on his leg, it would have snapped. if anything i think that highlight shows how cool LT was. he was out to hit people, but he didnt like the fact that he ended a guy's career.
I really don't LT should be over Dick Butkus I'm just saying in my eyes they both should be in the top ten but Butkus caused way more damage than LT ever did I'm not hating I have much respect for LT
@Pgaither84 nfc championship january 1991 i remember it like yesterday.low scoring game.john taylor scored the only touchdown.montana evaded taylor and marshall crushed him.funny thing that year the 49ers were ranked 1st in run defense and giants 2nd in total defense
@dertylox45 I'm glad you remember it, most Giants fans [read average AND Hardcore fans alike] do not remember it well. Most Giants fans edit the memory to Taylor making the hit. As @smaylin22 said, Montana avoided Taylor and was in mid throw when Marshall hits him from behind.
To me it's sad, I never want to see players injured. If my team loses or wins, i want to know we faced the best competition the other team had.
@smaylin22 this isn't a best defensive players of all time list, its a most feared defensive players of all time list, there is a big difference between the two.
These guys are all a bunch of twats. Bill Romanowski, all day son. He would pound your head through the fucking earth, and then kick your ass just because he could.
north node libra's are warriors, best equipped to help others win. bruce lee, jesse ventura bobby knight, john mcenroe are north node libras, we have savage tempers.
@flattop44sc wannabe are u callin ladanian a wannabe he is a first ballad hall of famer lawrence wasnt he probobly aint even goin to the hall of fame no disrespect to lawrence but u made a mistake when u called ladanian a wannabe
@axon117 In my opinion, there is no player, today or yesterday, who changed his position or other teams mind set the way the real L.T. did. There is only one LT and he's not a running back.Just sayin the nickname LT was already taken by the greatest defensive player ever.Forget his off field antics, Taylor should be a definate hall of famer.
You know, that is ultimate respect. The man folded him in half like a piece of paper and not only did he wave the trainers and medical personnel over, he immediately showed remorse for what had happened. You always go out there wanting to hurt someone but you don't actually like the outcome. Most of the time.
The only and i mean "Only" reason that LT isn't in the top 2 is. LT was allowed to roam. And nobody knew where he was gonna line up at all. Where as Reggie White and Decon Jones had to line up in one spot on the line and stay there until the ball was snapped, where as LT was moving all over the place before the ball was snapped.
Oh, wow... LT: "I love to hit".

He completely transcended the game. And he was a monster. You talk that shit but I bet if LT knocked the shit out of you, your dumb opinion would changed with the quickness. FOOL

For another thing, he could and did get away with more, and those littler guys knew it
BTW LT was the best, but he had help-the best LB crew ever, Carson, Reasons, LT, Pepper Johnson? good lord
PorkFrog 4 months ago
@PorkFrog You name his linebacking corp, and somehow forget Carl Banks? How dare you. Carl Banks was a starter when they had their BEST linebacking corp, LT, Carson, Banks...
crx122 4 months ago
@crx122 Yer right-I knew I was missing one-I threw Pepper in there but he was a rookie in 86 and not a full time starter till 87, but Banks was the one escaped me
Tho I'll always remember how good the NFC was then-SF, NYG, Skins, Bears-not just good, historically so. Vikes and Rams as an honorable mention
mentioned LT's team because sometimes people forget - team game
LT woulda stood out on any team, but he is remembered as the greatest because of how good the defensive team he played on was
PorkFrog 4 months ago
@PorkFrog That's too true, and just saying, the NFL has NEVER had a linebacking corp as dominant as the Giants had since that time. LT was able to do what he did because Carson was about as tough up the middle as they come, and Banks was incredibly athletic and tremendous on the goal line (so was Carson for that matter.) When you throw in Reasons to the bunch, it just made them unstoppable. Their backup was another premier player, doesn't get better than that. It was NFC dominance then...
crx122 4 months ago
@crx122 Bullshit. The two years before were all Singeltary Marshall and Wilson. Best defense and LBs ever.
Nautilus1972 4 months ago
@Nautilus1972 I can always tell when someone has no knowledge of Football, and is just a parrot of the media hype they've heard. If you truly believe the 85 Bears had the best LB corp, you're so full of shit. NONE of their linebackers had any pass coverage ability, if they didn't get to the QB, it was over. Did you see what the Dolphins did to them in 85? Those LBs were one dimensional. To be great you need longevity, with the West Coast Offense, they fizzled out pretty much overnight. Thanks
crx122 4 months ago
@Nautilus1972 In the future, it's best to just remain silent if you don't know what you're talking about. When you talk about the Giants, who won multiple SB's and had a dominating linebacking corp for years, and then try to say the Bears LB's were better, you just sound stupid. They were successful for ONE YEAR, before the West Coast Offense exposed how poor their linebackers were in pass coverage. They did NOTHING after that, and were nowhere near as effective. One dimensional = the best? NO
crx122 4 months ago
@crx122 And you know what you're talking about? The Giants won MULTIPLE super bowls? That team won ONE super bowl. And yes, the BEars were the best single season defense ever. Only defense ever to shut out their opponents in the playoffs nad then absolutely destroy a high octane offense in the SB. Will never happen again. Complete dominance no one ever came close to repeating. Check yourself.
Nautilus1972 3 months ago
@crx122 LT was as effective as he was because he was surrounded by great LBs. Yes, he was awesome, no he wasn't the best. ANd Butkus was never taking underage girls into hotel rooms and smoking crack with them either.
Nautilus1972 3 months ago
@Nautilus1972 I completely disagree. LT was effective because of his freakish athleticism. There was no blocking scheme in place to stop an OLB who could do what he did. Conventional wisdom held that the running back took care of blitzing linebackers, which well you know didn't work. He would have been a dominant pass rusher anywhere, just happened to wind up in the perfect situation. Also who cares about his off the field activity? We are talking about his skill as a FOOTBALL PLAYER.
crx122 3 months ago
@crx122 Nautilus is the stupidest football fan EVER. A fact. I watched LT for 14 years and he as a beast senior year at North Carolina and changed everything about playing LB when he got to the NFL. First LB to run down the line with his 4.4. speed. Nobody ran at LT. LT was the reason Joe Gibbs came up with two and three tight end offenses. LT could do everything including when called for pass cover. See 98 yard INT return for TD against Detroit. Tomahawk chop is all LT. Unstoppable.
TheLuscious 1 month ago
Typical anti-NY bias. Middle America can have your Dick Butkis. He couldn't run or hit like LT. Take your number 3 and shove it.
knix200129 4 months ago
@knix200129 LT was a drug cheat and a crackhead. Butkus did it clean. So you shove it.

barcafanatic 4 months ago

L.T. Is the Greatest LB. Every player knows this. past, present, or the future. There is no argument.
HallWayGang 4 months ago
@HallWayGang Let's not get crazy. Stop jerking off and calm down. There was a man name Dick Butkus who was 'pretty damm good'! So were Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell and a host of others. Besides, LT could not play the run as good as others. He was primarily a pass-rusher. So, I would suggest you do better research and caaaalm dooowwwn!.
92463mike 4 months ago
@92463mike ahahahahaha. what a bafoon. "LT could not play the run" Listen up, and listen up real good. LT was the most complete LB EVER. Butkus would even tell you that! Butkus was slow as molasses! dont ever compare him to LT you clown. this is the last time i respond to ppl who lack football knowledge.
HallWayGang 4 months ago
LT was a great player but all you twats that claim he "changed" the position can go suck a dick. Nobody wanted him to change anything. The NFL was already run by little girls by the time he played. The real men had long since retired.
rrhynes 4 months ago
@rrhynes LT can play a circle around Butkus. Bring all the real men that you say have retired and play with todays players? Why don't all you people that love the old timers watch how fast these guys move today and get a grip on reality. If the nfl was ran by a bunch of little girls like you say then you should be playing nfl. I love watching the older era, but try to compare players from back then to now.
kojak235 4 months ago
@kojak235 Of course. Nobody is doubting that. However, some of the new players wouldn't handle the old NFL so well either. By comparison , they're spoiled and tended to in a way that is almost sickening. They get the best care, food, etc. They are faster, perhaps, but tougher no. Smarter, only because they have the luxury of watching the past and evolving with the present. So, it's impossible to compar. However, the NFL is run by pansies today. There is no doubt about that. Too many bs rules.
rrhynes 4 months ago
@rrhynes The players of today are leagues more athletic than the players of the past.
AgrivatedKillah 4 months ago
@AgrivatedKillah In some cases. Of course, you have to factor in the roiders. They don't count.
rrhynes 4 months ago
LT wasn't near as fierce as Butkus. He was just higher than fuck all thei time so he seemed crazy, but he was just jonesin'.
rrhynes 4 months ago
it shows you the power that he has? a 100 lb girl could have fallen on theisman and had it been the same angle of pressure on his leg, it would have snapped. if anything i think that highlight shows how cool LT was. he was out to hit people, but he didnt like the fact that he ended a guy's career.

@Pgaither84. But it was LT who forced Joe to the inside where Leonard gave it to Joe.
Ariamaluum 5 months ago
@Pgaither84 nfc championship january 1991 i remember it like yesterday.low scoring game.john taylor scored the only touchdown.montana evaded taylor and marshall crushed him.funny thing that year the 49ers were ranked 1st in run defense and giants 2nd in total defense
dertylox45 5 months ago
@dertylox45 I'm glad you remember it, most Giants fans [read average AND Hardcore fans alike] do not remember it well. Most Giants fans edit the memory to Taylor making the hit. As @smaylin22 said, Montana avoided Taylor and was in mid throw when Marshall hits him from behind.
To me it's sad, I never want to see players injured. If my team loses or wins, i want to know we faced the best competition the other team had.
Pgaither84 5 months ago
@Pgaither84 Avoiding Taylor almost ruined montana's career

You know, that is ultimate respect. The man folded him in half like a piece of paper and not only did he wave the trainers and medical personnel over, he immediately showed remorse for what had happened. Sgballer05 1 year ago
The only and i mean "Only" reason that LT isn't in the top 2 is. LT was allowed to roam. And nobody knew where he was gonna line up at all.
