we are called to love the lost and broken first, and not try to understand them. The world says let me try to understand you first and decide if you are worth loving.
Jesus came for the lost, the broken, and those living in hopelessness
@ootube7 - Yes, to love them and give them hope, and with that taken care of, to come to understand them, not to condemn them. Most of them have already had enough condemnation.
One time I saw a play about this very story but cannot locate it... Does anyone know where this link story is about this exact story but where it was actually created in a small movie... My emal is janestree@aol.com. Within my own life I too walked in these shoes and JESUS rescued me out. Now I am married for almost 34 years to the most loving Christian righteous man of God... My husband did not even love me at the time but the Lord told him to marry me (as with Boaz toward Ruth)
@janestree The movie is called "The Least of These", and I saw a review of it on some Christian website, but I can't find the movie, or even a trailer for it. There are several other movies out there of the same name, but totally different subjects.
I do not approve of this mans judging of "the man" who turns a girl into a prostitute because of his wicked way. I believe there was a good chance that the man who ifluenced such sexual behaviour was also once a sweet little innocent kid who was most likely molested at a younger age! He too could of led a normal life! We do things bad and that defines us. Sexual predators struggle to change there habits just like prostitutes! I struggle to spit out the bones with this clip!
@nelsonquake If you destroy the demand for prostitution, then you don't need prostitutes. "The man" shouldn't take all the blame, but he should take most of it. You take away man's need and desire for prostitutes, then those little girls won't be turning to prostitution.
I think the point he was trying to make was that too often it is the prostitute herself that is judged and that is the focus without looking for a deeper meaning but you are right that we as Christians should not jump to any judgement.
Do not always like Campolo but I think he has something to say here. the only problem I have with this is that I think the "something more" is not salvation from Jesus Christ but instead a greater more temporal blessing than many churches do. So I guess in the end I do not think he goes far enough. In the end what she really ultimately needs is Jesus Christ and salvation. That I fear Campolo leaves out.
I would like to respond to the person who thinks he can tell an evangelist how to share the gospel. You may well have not thrown the woman a birthday party. You may have preached at her. Tony shared the message of salvation with her through his act of kindness, through showing her she was a human being. Tony shared the gospel the way Jesus did. He showed the woman Jesus is worth bothering with. Share the gospel, but DO IT WITH JESUS CHARACTER, NOT YOUR OWN.
Hardcore fundamentalists argue against people like Campolo by saying "Why doesn't he preach out against sin more?" The answer is that Campolo preaches Christ's love, and once a person encounters the love of God in a real and tangible way, a natural byproduct of that relationship is a lifestyle change away from sin and into purity. God IS love and through his love we are redeemed. Blessed are the least of these, free from pride they may more easily kneel before the father in all their brokenness.
On a recent edition of CNN's Crossfire, Tony Campolo refused to say Jesus is the only way to heaven. The panel was discussing events at the Southern Baptist Convention in Atlanta. Campolo would not answer the question directly but said, "The Apostle Paul says that there are people who have light that is not Christian light, and they will be judged on that basis.
Being a Christian isn't just about not sinning. Being a Christian is about admitting that we are broken, dysfunctional, and no longer operating in the purposes we were created for. It's about allowing God's holy and perfect love to renew and restore us to our intended purposes, which are to love. And it's about loving freely out of the love we have been given. That's the gospel message.

Response to the question did he tell her she needed to be saved, I am not sure that Tony believes that prostitution is wrong. The prostitue can't help that they are this way as he say it is because of someone else's filthy action. Tony believes that homosexuality is alright because a person is born that way. All we need to do is love them. I believe his prostitute story is made up. Yea, prostitutes are not busy at 3:30 am two nights in the row. He uses it to get his point across.
such a touching story. THAT is a Christian. Many peeps can learn from that. Who cares if she was saved or not. Like Brian MacLaren wrote in one of his books: count conversations, not conversions. Simply loving someone can speak louder than telling them they're a sinner in need of salvation, especially if the person is in a broken state.
continued... Noone is perfect, Jesus said Go ,sin no more. do NOT carrry on in that profession- having the faith to do that,& telling the pimp to get lost! is an act of FAITH. Jesus will care of her needs. As she acts on that immediately, repenting, truly, her life will change,. Lack of FAITH keeps many from salvation, Those who claim salvation,& live like the devil.,are not HIS> They trust Jesus accepts they;re livestyle , continuing in drugs or sex. ect.
Nice story tony, but did you tell her how to get Saved? did you tell her the only way is through G-d's word, and the only way to the Father is via Jesus? Did she accept? or reject? did you at least tell her so she had the option? Did you tell her to turn from her sin lifestyle? The person who made her do it is not the only one resposible. SHE said YES. that's what confession is, not passing the blame.
Campolo is an evangelist so I'm sure he did. However, it's more important to show you love and care for a person, like he did through this act, then tell them some story they've probably heard before. And she is not a sinner, she is a victim.
Tony has alot of stories. He shares many touching situations of people. Loving and caring is one thing, but him not acting on it, by sharing Jesus love and FREE salvation for her, is an incomplete outreach. Tony can sympathise all he wants, but what does Jesus say , go into all the world and tell people about HIM. This girl has not hope without that blessed hope. BUT she also must turn from her life style, Jesus said " go and SIN no more to the prostitue, not accept her the way she is.
Is St. Francis " GOd" ?. Words of Jesus: "Go into all the world and " PREACH" the gospel. This applies to all Not just Priests, Missionaries, &Teachers.. all responsible to TELL/ Preach(Same) others. Our actions are complete with WORDS-Jesus said, if they don't listen, move on , He also wasn't apprectiated in his OWN TOWN, jESUS didn't condem them, He moved on to listening ears, " Faith comes by hearing & Hearing comes by the word of the LORD, THE BIBLE.
Tony Campolo is a personal inspiration to me. I saw the video and sat there moved to tears. I am inspired to be more like Jesus. To do as Tony did. Paul said, "I'mitate me as I imitate God." Thank you Tony for impacting me in a godly way once again. God bless you Brother. I hope to meet you someday so I can hug you and encourage you to keep doing what you do best: Proclaim the love of Jesus to the lost and the oppressed and to be prophetic to the people of God.
He told this exact same story at Missionfest 2009 in Vancouver, BC. It was crazy. Hillsong was there and we had worship with 10,000 Christian youth from around Canada then Tony Campolo spoke. The old coach of the BC Lions also came and spoke about God, he is a Christian! Crazy stuff. But ya. it was pretty crazy best time of my life
We bring love and joy into their lives yes, but without JESUS that love and joy is empty! We must tell the people about Jesus Christ and how the sinless unblmeished One died for sinners! He sat with prosititutes, touched unclean people and we must do the same BUT we shouold tell people about Him! The social gospel is empty without Christ being centre!
For those who said they'd join a church like that, why not do what you can to create such a community. Be the catalyst for this kind of radical compassion.
I know Tony and I also know that this story is a true one. The real point is not if it's true or not; but if we can show the love of Christ instead of passing judgement. That question is a more important one to ask of ourselvs.
