federer used to produce this kind of tennis, and I don't fully understand why he doesn't anymore. if he still played close or at this level, he would still have an edge over djokovic, who would be beating up on nadal, who would still own federer. even just last year after the us open he dusted up djokovic a few times and had the win over nadal, playing some flawless tennis, and now he's erratic and isn't even in return games hardly.
I'm kind of new to tennis, absolutely loving the gaming. I did see a couple of the comments below, but just to clear it up is it legal at all to hit it with your head like he did in the end, or was it called over and he just did it for fun?
@Mirren81 I also think the same about ther number 1. But in the second one at the us open well is obvious that the players gonna get better with the time Del Potro make a good evolution in 2009 he win the us open and get to the final of the masters at london
Yes Federer wasn't as good as he was here rather than the U.s Open. But Del Potro played well and no reason to take away the credit he deserves for winning his 1st grand slam. He mauled Nadal in the SF and took Federer to 5 sets twice. It's a shame he won't be able to defend his title.
@riceranger12345 courts are slower here in melbourne compared to us open, so federer had time to recover del po's shots. plus, he wasnt nearly as good as when he reached his first major final in us open. but nonetheless this was vintage fed.
@riceranger12345 'If's' are so commonly used....we could say 'if this or that' happenned and the story'd always have a different ending. So why bothering, just stick to the facts

i find it amazing how del potro came back to win the us open on the same surface that very same year, after taking such a beating. he didnt face the same federer though, and he played the match of his life. still amazing
@20036012 Very true, apart from the serve Delpo was in a divine moment, he was at his 100% while Fed was at 70%, not noly his serve failed him, he was overconfident, I hope they rematch this year in the US final en Fed wins
@Elwink Usopen is the fastest right? What about the grass?did they change it there it looks like clay now..i think delpo will do good on a fast grass court
I think del potro will beat roger more if roger is not more aggressive but also clever about how he plays juan martin, when roger used to mastered him,he was because he was mixing up his shots and really moving him about but in the 2 last matches roger has tried to trade with a younger, stronger player strength his forehand and has been burned a lot of times.
But del potro really to me doesn't seem to have any real weaknesses, his backhands handle rafa well and his forehand can beat murray .
this was del potro's worst match in 2009 that's for sure it's very easy to confirm that if we compare this match with the US Open final which would take place only 7 months after this match.Del potro's skills have improved a lot
Not really...surely delpo's skill improved, but I think Fed's skill in the USO Final dropped immensely at times, which was what ultimately lost it for him. Fed basically had the match in the bag, but allowed delpo to come back and take it. Just look at the fifth set, where Fed was basically a zombie.
It's incredbly amazing how Delpo recovered from this match only to win 6-2 in the fifith in the US Open. Considering that he lost in AO and RG to Federer, but won in US and in the ATP Finals, I foresee Delpo wining one more Grand Slam this year.
y2jayeddy djokovic and roddick are really not one time wonders they are in the top ten one time wonders win then fall of the top list of players or never make it roddick and novak won then stayed there i agree with you a little bit
I think you're probably wrong, not only about Del Potro, but also about Djokovic. These guys are gonna win more Slams, for sure. And Roddick has a chance in Wimbledon if he keeps his level of 2009.
What an amazing journey it has been for Del Potro this year. Received a Beatdown in Oz, had Federer by the neck in Paris and beat him finally in New York. He then managed another victory in London and is now in tomorrow's final. Good Luck Juan Martin, the tennis world is at your feet.
@EricTheRed03 yeah totally agree... and he served a million times better and kept the ball deep to control most of the points in australia... unfortunately, he played very good at both tournaments but just didn't have his serve or mentally in rhythm in the final of both ssiggghhhh
@2nadalfederer1 are u serious? roger didnt let him in that case. he obviously did an upgrade, thats why he was able to beat roger an rafa, but dont come with that bollocks that He let roger do this or that. roger is the fucking best tennis player of all times, he can fuck you up and you wouldnt even notice it.
Well and that Upgrade of Del Potro's game is what I am talkin' about. Del Potro couldn't resist that hard here as he did in US Open. That is my version of "allowing". I think we both mean the same thing but I've just formulated it badly.
Well, to be fair, Del Potro did put up more of a fight in the US Open, so Federer probably felt he needed to be a bit more careful, take less chances.
And, it's hard to be agressive when your opponent is shooting 90mph forehands left and right.
I think it's terrific that Delpo ended Federer's reign in NY. WAY overdue, I might add.... I look forward to the day Federer retires. I'm sick of his arrogance.
say that again ... and you are a dead man ... you're such a pussy to say stuff like that .. You better shut the fuck up and ask your parents to teach you some manners wanker ... or I will ...
Don't you ever talk like that about the greatest tennis player of all time ..; don't you ever talk like that about the god of tenis .. don't you ever talk like that about THE KINg or I'll bust your ass ass hole .. and if you stil think his arrogant I'll show you some interview to prove you wrong ignorant
arrogance? you should tell federer that. except he won't be able to hear you over the sound of his two daughters playing with his 15 grand slam trophies.
LOL if you were playing tennis im pretty sure youd react like that, making sure youd win the match. shut your mouth about his "arrogance" cuz hes not. youre pathetic smh.
hmm federer is the legend and even he lost the us open it doesnt mean that he lost the love of the fans and people who really likes him..i believe everybody has a time for everything so its not always time for him to win cos not all has the power to stay where the sun is shining forever...
Roger definitely faded during the last couple of sets at the US Open. His serve was never much of a weapon throughout and he was tactically wrong in always hitting to Del Potro's forehand, which was clearly ON FIRE.
Del Potro was the better player that day, for sure.
Too early to tell if he's the next great one.
Remember when Safin spanked Sampras in 2000? Where is he now?
in a jacuzzi with 5 russian supermodels. poor, poor, safin lol.
+ i wouldn't say that fed faded, he definitely put up a fight, but his shots lost pace, so when he tried to hit to the backhand del potro could run around and hit that crazy fh. u could tell the fh wasn't on early so it made sense for fed to go to it then, i thought he'd definitely find a way to make delpo uncomfortable eventually. fed even went away from the low, cutting slice, hitting loopy ones that DP didn't need to bend for.
Yup,totally agreed. Many young rising stars do defeat the top guns time to time but no one was like Federer. He was the only one who lasted and along with Nadal after he won RG.Like 5-6 years Roger stayed up there...some players got in top 10 one season and disappear the next.
Safin's career (like a fair amount of other great/potential players was fucked up by endless injury and after taking Federer in AO 05 SF (one of the best matches ever) he was never the same. I realize that preventing injury could also be a talent. Safin was injured in 01, 03, and 05 plus a lot of smaller, lingering injuries in the last couple of years. Safin is not as talented as Federer and would not have had 15+ gs, but he certainly could have had 6-8 gs if it worked out. no excuses though..
I love this guy. And cool he won the us open( a medium slam) not bad a bit like Ivanisevic vs Rafter 01 SW19. As happy as i am about Del potro etc. I am not confident at all he'll be up top. i hope am wrong, but i don't think so. i've seen it so many times. Congrats to Del potro though...
Usain bolt of tennis, i think not. Del potro should get about 5 - 7 slams I reckon. Hes tall, suspect to injury (maybe) and can be beaten by slice and volley. Although he is my 2nd favourite player, lets reserve silly questions. The Usain Bolt of tennis is still playing :)
This was the worst beatdown of Del Potro's career. believe me, he hasn't forgotten it for a day. He looks back on this match when he knows he needs to improve his game.
federer can hit with more power than most of the power players right now... obviously not all the power players though, cuz theers always the issue of the raging bull
he sure did, federer loves bullying up newcomers. but del potro did well to push federer to 5 sets in the french, he completely outplayed federer in the first 3 sets, del potro had a humiliating defeat here, but i daresay he has a bright future ahead
did federer just head-butted the ball at 6:04?

I love this guy. And cool he won the us open( a medium slam) not bad a bit like Ivanisevic vs Rafter 01 SW19. As happy as i am about Del potro etc. I am not confident at all he'll be up top. i hope am wrong, but i don't think so. i've seen it so many times. Congrats to Del potro though...

2009. Del Potro is USO Champion, beating R.Federer. Will giant Del Potro go on to become the 'Usain Bolt' of tennis.
Time will tell.
One thing is for sure... Nadal and Federer now have something MORE serious to worry about from now on!! Grand Slams will now be a bitch to win!
Galactus247 2 years ago
Usain bolt of tennis, i think not. Del potro should get about 5 - 7 slams I reckon. Hes tall, suspect to injury (maybe) and can be beaten by slice and volley. Although he is my 2nd favourite player, lets reserve silly questions. The Usain Bolt of tennis is still playing :)

This was the worst beatdown of Del Potro's career. believe me, he hasn't forgotten it for a day. He looks back on this match when he knows he needs to improve his game.

Federer played unbelievably well that day!
at the same time i feel sad for Del potro b coz he is a good player who just couldnt get his game right that day?

Del Potro did well to push Federer to 3 sets ;)

Are you like retarded? Some tournaments (all the grand slams) play a best of 5 match -.- roger won 3 straight sets...

It was a joke you fool! Did you not see the wink after my comment? Clearly too subtle for you.

for me i prefer touch players like federer rather than power players
stylinthegreat 2 years ago 2
federer can hit with more power than most of the power players right now... obviously not all the power players though, cuz theers always the issue of the raging bull

alguna duda sobre el mejor d todos los tiempos?

he humilliated del potro
Satch6strings 2 years ago 3
he sure did, federer loves bullying up newcomers. but del potro did well to push federer to 5 sets in the french, he completely outplayed federer in the first 3 sets, del potro had a humiliating defeat here, but i daresay he has a bright future ahead

totally agree with you
