  • That's an awesome review!

  • i would never describe a £500 phone "Humble"

  • You look like Robert Downey Jr looking good mate (no homo) and nice vids any thing like that for androids?

  • I hate my android now...

  • I wanted BOOBS

  • boobies

  • UBIGABE?!

  • Is it waterproof?

  • can i buy it from online stores

  • HuuuuGGEeeee Brick! wont fit into my pocket!

  • @Blunty3000 I think "Bubo" is referring to the mechanical owl in the original Clash of the Titans movie.

  • 6:12-6:19.... GIGGIDY!

  • ewe bowl. lol i feel smart

  • lol geeks buy it becous its thonly boob thell git lol

  • Very good review. I purchased this unit, however, I am having problems with the macro lens treads, looks that is not seating properly the lens, also I can not separate

the macro lens from the wide angle. I do not want to force anything specially with the screwing treads. Please shed a light over this matter.

    Best wishes

    Carlos

  • Screw 2 together, borrow your friend's phone, and shoot 3d.

    *COOLFACE*

  • Does it hold camcorders because i need one. Plz reply.

  • I NEED ONE!!!

  • I sat through that whole video waiting for you to change into IronMan. Great review though; I just ordered one.

    -VST

  • tits. haha

  • he looks like TONY STARK !

  • would you recommend doing this over buying a flip cam or sony bloggie because I already have ipod touch 4g. thanks

  • OMG I have ipod touch 4g and I cant wait to get one :3

  • Hi! Quick question: I have an iPhone 3GS, but hoping to upgrade to 4, will the same Bubo be compatible with both, or do I purchase with upgrade in mind?

  • Hi! Quick question: I have an iPhone 3GS, but hoping to upgrade to 4, will the same Bubo be compatible with both, or do I purchase with upgrade in mind?

  • ...oooor you just have photoshop ;)

  • Great review! Very thorough! Thanks!

  • Much cheaper than a conventional video camera.

As in those large bulky ones.

Honestly though, could it have the potential to maybe to a degree replace some of those conventional video cameras if they expand on this concept?

  • You look like the dude from iron man :)

  • Oh And Where Did you get the Boom Mic?

  • What are the type of lenses called? Where can you buy them?

  • this is such a awesome product, i can't believe i missed this.

  • its too bad the iphone 3g becomes obsolete 30,000 years before the Owle Bubo will show any signs of degradation. unless the 4g will fit...??

  • In this video, you look like a long lost brother of Robert Downey Jr.

  • Hi, Thanks for the video, very informative.

I noticed that color saturation seems to be a bit better with the wide angle lens than the iphone by itself (What lens were you using? the supplied one or your own one?)

Also, do you think is worth to spend so much money on one of this bubos? you can buy a second video camera for a few dollars more...

And finally, why do you like mother? that takes disgusting :-)

    Thanks for sharing mate

  • got mine for Christmas and it became a hit with family members that we could get such fantastic video quality from such a small device, and mine is being used with the new iPod Touch 4G, which isnt even advertised to work with the OWLE Bubo. had to come up with a work around regarding the placement of the mic, but it wasnt a deal-breaker and other than that, its golden. besides, anyone with Optimus Prime on a desk and a Teen Titans t-shirt should always be trusted. :) great review.

  • Hey blunty, where do we can get this in Aus?

  • it's still fucking pointless putting proper lenses on an iphone

  • This is one of the better OWLE reviews I've seen! Thanks for being so informative. :)

  • Lens caps?

  • Does this work with the iPhone 4?

Also seeing a lot of curves with the Bubo.....and I do not mean the boobs. Nice boobs though....get that poster for me will ya?

  • thank you for your answers. appreciate it greatly. am a fan of your show now and will keep watching. thanks and cheers.

  • Oh and additionally, does the iphone 4 produce even better photos and videos after it was mounted on the owle bubo and the different kinds of lens since the iphone's new camera is now in HD. Thank you once again.

  • @davidogan Vastly more flexible.

  • @Blunty3000 Blunty--how did your telephoto lens work out--if you liked it, would you please share the make/model? Since you can't zoom with the iPhone in video mode, lots are reporting serious vignetting of telephoto lenses. Just wondering what your experience is/was.

  • Hi Blunty. First time viewer from Thailand here. Great review show you have. Love your enthusiasm and "blunt" style of review. Thinking of getting the owle bubo in terms of enhancing audio quality with external microphones? And I am also curious whether the bubo could work with the new ipod gen4 also? Would love to hear your answer. Even better, perhaps a video review on the subject would be great. Thank you.

  • @davidogan As you can see in this video Mics mount fine. I don't have an iPod to test.

  • @Blunty3000 real quick..where can i purchase the light from..

  • I really enjoyed your review. Cool!

  • The problem is that most DSLR's made by Canon, Pentax, Nikon, etc... Use bayonet style lens mounts, as apposed to screw mount rigs. So finding screw mount lenses which were last used by large camera manufactures during the 50's and 60's, might be abit of a challenge as time goes on. At the price you are paying I'd just used SLR As this will give you a focal ring, an aperture control ring, and a shutter speed control knob.

  • @GalaticTG I'm sorry dude, but you're a colossal twat... screw mount lenses are easy to find and will continue to be. they are extremely common.

  • Terrible... i prefer a real camera :D

  • Anyone know if this is compatible with the iPhone 4? or just 3G/3GS?

  • @Joe52090 Works great with my iPhone 4 since I upgraded... it's not as perfect a fit as the 3gs obviously, but I've had zero usability issues. Still love my Bubo :)

  • Or... bring a camera. Problem solved!

  • Thanks for the great detailed video.. I'd like to learn about buying lenses for the Bubo.

The camera mount is 37mm and are the lenses 55mm with the standard lens set?

Is there somewhere online that explains this?

You mentioned adding lens convertors as well..

If I was to add a extender what size lens screws onto that, 55mm?

    Thanks!!

  • @yogaschool when I say 37mm I'm talking about the screw thread on the lens, not the characteristics of the glass itself.

  • lol dslr iphone =p

  • mp prime ftw

  • Can you put the iPod nano(the one with the camera) on the Owlie Bubo.

  • Ah, a good Australian review, complete with obligatory BOOBS reference..:-)

  • Awesome review. I can see the iPhone 4 becoming a serious film project tool with the Bubo.

  • looks great, once iPhone4 comes out, it will be an awesome piece of kit for doing some filming with. I would seriously consider this, especially with different lenses and the like...

I'll have a rewatch to find the details of that site you mentioned that showcases videos made with iphones etc...

Good work - I'll probably now subscribe to your channel based on the review - good style and I liked it.

  • This is actually seems like a good thing, especially as a photographer. it's a good accessory, gives you better quality photos, and macro its a feature that the iPhone lacks.

  • The name of the owle bubo,Is Ali baba bin bubo Owle!~

  • bubo is the owl in clash of the titans .....cookie plox

  • lol the old clash of the titans name xD now where my cookie? lol

  • Brilliant video review. You're really good. I think you'd be better to go for a camcorder itself, but man, this is still pretty impressive. Liked and subscribed :)

  • can you buy that mic seperate?

  • Really nice review . But dude your jokes were sooo corny. Not even a chuckle . Stick to the reviews straight. That you are good at but jokes ? Jeesh

  • Best review I've seen on this, and I'm only 5 minutes in!

  • why wouldn't you just use a legit camera?

  • PLEASE tell me where you got that light an how much it was!

  • Ali Baba?

  • Great for camera nuts who already have a camera with all the additional lens and addons and just plain ol' rather geeky.

  • Sounds great, but for the $119 price tag, I can get a good flip cam for that.

  • dont get me wrong, i love my iphone. But wouldnt it be much simpler to carry around a standard little digital camera instead of toting around a plethera of attachments?

  • do you have a teen titan shirt on?

  • lol @ his shirt

  • very cool little gadget for what it does but i'd rather have a real cam..still though pretty awesome

  • might as well carry a camera around with you

  • One little minor flaw to it's design... It looks horrible.... and u gotta tug all that weight around... i mean u got 100 different things that aren't standard... and usually if u do really need all that stuff it dosen't equal a dedicated video/photo device... just my opinion.

  • @stryke92 But with iPhone you can send photos and do a lot of other things directly from iPhone!

  • why dont you just get a real fricken camera. what a useless device.

  • @ThatCoolDudeYouKno - Maybe it's because people don't have money to buy a $1000 professional camera.

  • I seriously doubt the quality of that camera, even with all the expensive adds, would be anywhere near even a dedicated camera in a lower pricerange than the Iphone.

  • You advertised that so well! They should buy it off you and give you money for advertising on TV!!

I'd buy it...but I don't have an iPhone yet ;'( That looks so cool though!!!!

  • wow....i think i might be worth getting an iPhone 3gs just for the owle bubo. seriously...I'm frigging blown away by that "hunk of alloy."

  • How do you take a call?

    This is unbelievably impractical haha

  • @marquesbrownlee You spend all of the two seconds it takes to release the iphone from the Bubo and take the call as usual. Duh, not really rocket science champ.

  • Ah, so there's no real hardware in their with the dock connector connecting it to the Bubo? Just a matter of lining up the lens?

I hope so. That would be so much easier =]

  • @Blunty3000 Wow, that was a bit of a pretentious answer for a pretty standard and fair question

  • Clash of the Titains refferance maybe

  • That looks fantastic! I wonder when someone will come out with a version for other phones?

  • I'm sure others have probably said this, but surely it is just better to get an actual camera?

Even if it is a lot more money, won't you probably end up getting a real camera if you are serious about photography?

It's not as though you will have this Owle Bubo with you a lot of the time.

  • Lol. Blunty, we trust ya. Least I do. Seen you rip some products a new one if they had flaws. =) Games included.

  • 6:20 Noticed you focused on the cleavage xD

    Optimus prime action figure FTW

Well, I dont own an Iphone, Or one of the other doo-hickeys, But I am really surprised and pleased that you made this video, even better if the company hasnt released the info regarding all the accessories.

Nice video. 4/5 from me. =)

  • monster > mother

  • all we need now is a water proof casing for the iphone

  • there is one

  • "a product that is purposely designed to provide extra prowess to your iphone's picture taking..."

Potential would have been a spot on word for this one Blunty.

  • @AndyKuffz or performance. I think he left it out on purpose.

  • I'm just curious. Would it be cheaper to just buy an actual camera instead of this thing? I'm assuming that this view only applies if you buy the iPhone solely for the camera. I really don't know though.

  • Bubo the Owl?

    From... Clash of the titans?

    I love that name.

  • Is the answer Uwe Boll?

  • I love it, I guess that's the bad thing about not owning a phone that everyone else seems to have, Ive got a nice phone does 720p video and all that, but isn't mass marketed or hugely successful, so it's not going to get anything like this, sadly :(

  • not only did it bring out the true color of the flowers but i gauntee it is like 10x easier to record with and alot steadier

  • Wow, that's awesome.

The Iphone is really capable of a lot of stuff.

    Nice Blunty!

  • It seems like a lot to turn an expensive thing, into an even more expensive thing. Why not just buy a video camera? or a digital camera with a decent video record.

  • Not an iPhone user myself, but that's pretty damned awesome how much functionality it adds to the device!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • 5 star great vid that thing can do anything u might aswell buy a new camera but lol

  • Bubo is Athena's owl - as seen, in robotic stop motion form, in "Clash of the Titans".

Athena was goddess of wisdom, amongst other things, which is why the owl is often used as a symbol to represent wisdom.

For "bonus points", did you know that Bubo - Athena's owl - is actually on the reverse face of Greek-minted Euro coins (derived from an actual Ancient Greek coin, which also had the owl)?

    I'm on geek overdrive! :D

  • you must be a pretty big tool if your need to use a mic that big. just get a proper video camera..

  • mate propper video cameras cost $2000-$5000 dollars plus....know wot ur sayting b4 u call sum1 a tool ;) im jst sayin!

  • Not the geek reference I'm sure, but Bubo is the Latin word for owl.

  • Very good review.

  • jesus, buy a friggin camera.

  • the video wasn't very clear with the bubu if you looked at the flowers it was a fair bit brighter but didn't look better at all

  • Blunty, you make really great reviews that are both interesting and informative. After the first few seconds of the video I was about to leave because I neither have an iPhone or an interest in photography, but I still got caught up in the coolness of it and the way you presented it.

This is the way that I've noticed you do all of your reviews and I just want to say thank you for making them the way you do.!

  • that things makes me wanna buy an iphone. hahaha

  • This just looks completely pointless.

  • This is brilliant, not to sure about the price though.

  • 4:30 LOLOLOL!

  • I like your Teen Titans T-Shirt :D.

  • The microphone attachment that it comes with seems to be in a bad place to me, I have fairly large hands and if I want to get a good grip with both hands It looks like I could be bumping into it and distorting the sound. That is probably the only thing I could see wrong with it. Thanks for the review Blunty

  • It's a noticeable difference, but I wouldn't say a $130 review, and I just don't have that kind of extra cash at the moment. But someone who does have that extra dough, I could see them buying it, and I wouldn't stop them. What I'm really interested in though is that little mic, because I'm a big podcaster, and that would be the perfect accessory to my little netbook.

  • What a waste of cash, if you going to carry all that around you had might aswel just buy a proper camera.

  • *gasps* MOTHER! It's like sugar and magic mixed together.

Sorry, i really tried to pay attention to what Blunty was saying but i couldn't take my eyes off the can of magic that was sitting on the desk.

  • anybody know why 720p video is kinda jumpy on youtube although fully buffered?

  • the reason why the lens isn't wide enough is because the sensor in the camera is tiny.

    it gives a magnification factor.

also the curve is reffered to as distortion

or in this case barrel distortion

  • MOTHER!

  • good review! wouldnt mind getting one of those my self :) 5*

  • There is a bit of lens vertical distortion with the lens you fitted to the Bubo on some of the shots, but I guess if you were that worried about that then you'd just buy a proper video / camera.

  • its like lego just build a way end have fun

  • i see the point for a passionate geek very into all this stuff

But if i have an Iphone and just like taking snaps, Id' feel weird assembling this thing in public while a guy on my left takes out an ordinary camera ^^

  • reminds me of the PS1/2/3 controller :)

  • What a useless expensive chunky product. (supposedly $130 USD)

I don't see the point of carrying around some chunky gadget to take 'better' pictures.

  • Fuck walking around that big camcorder setup, Hey look at me im a tool trying to look like a pro with my make believe profesional HD camcorder.

  • I would like to see a more secure way of holding the iPhone in but other than that, what an amazing product!

  • LMAO blunty boobs xD

haha nice though i will have to invest in this ... and an iPhone haha

  • BOBOBO BO BOBO!! xD that is my geek reference thingy!!! hahaha

  • @xXxmasterd Ha! I get it!

  • all this for an iphone?

  • the iphone video looks clearer. or is this just me?

  • if i may ask, does the blur/softness of the color show up in life? or is that Youtube's encoder?

  • yer but its kinda blured with the colours

  • I just did a bit more research on it and it looks amazing. I just wish it didn't have the $130 price tag. It would definately get me using my iPhone 3GS camera a lot more for filming with friends instead of always borrowing my buddy's camera. Very nice find Blunty, I love the product, just wish I could get my hands on one for cheaper!

  • idk...a spaced reference? haha

  • That device is awesome....

  • *looks at 1st generation iTouch sadly*

    . . .

    MOTHER F***ER

  • Finally a review for the Owle Bubo by someone who gives a lot of information. Great video Blunty. I am thinking of picking one of these up soon this review kind of put me over the top for wanting one.

  • I'm gonna grab one now, thanks Blunty!

  • you could have at least mentioned the price...

  • @SidV101 Prices change over time, this video can't. Just check the website which I've conveniently linked to in the description text. in the time it took to write that comment, then wait for a reply, you could have found out for yourself.

  • I did look up the price using the link, but you said u couldn't find anything to nitpick about. u could have mentioned how it currently costs like $130, which puts off a lot of potential buyers

  • @SidV101 Considering the design, construction, materials, the fact they supply a duel-function lens and a good mic, I didn't find the price off-putting. Not cheap to be sure, but hardly unreasonable.

  • well, its just my worthless opinion, but imo they should have made it out of cheaper material and lowered the price tag (40 tons? is that really necessary? apparently thats 14 trucks. being able to withstand one truck seems like more than enough strength)

  • Bubo is the name of the mechanical owl in the 80's movie Clash of the Titans. Yes, I grew up with that too. Thanks.

  • I would never buy that. Trying to get better images out of an iPhone is like flogging a dead horse.

Could be a good door stopper or paper-weight.

  • @troy5690 Rather idiotic choice of metaphor, as "flogging a dead horse" accomplishes nothing of note, where as this device does exactly what it's supposed to do; allowing opportunities to expand on the existing capabilities of the iPhone.

  • Lets be honest. The iPhone is a crap camera. Sure its a handy feature, and the device itself is awsome, but the pictures it takes are ordinary(at best).

The iPhone will never produce a picture worth all the bother of adding all those peripherals. I "get" that geeks love to customise and add stuff on, but that lump of metal with a bueatiful piece of glass in it is nothing more than something to through at someone you dislike.

    Waste of good lenses.

  • @troy5690 Be as dismissive as you like, but I've seen some stunningly beautiful shots taken with the iPhone in skilled hands.

  • flower was probly the best demenstration i saw some curved images on the owle bubo it was still better quality

  • does it come in different colours?

  • It looks rather pointless to me. Why bring around all those add-ons and the thing itself when you could bring a professional camera that takes up less room. Also, it would be nice to know the prices. If it's under 50$ i guess that's not bad, but i have a feeling it's not.

  • Everything is quite pointless.

    Especially this very website.

  • Also the fact that it's an iPhone, which has many more uses than a standard camera.

  • man that is really cool;)

    I wish I had one

does anyone know how much it costs?

  • @Blunty3000 I was gonna get one! thanks!!!

  • @blunty3000 its cool that you can equip all this shit on it but i have an extremely good vision and i barely see any difference ,may be like you said a reduction in shake but thats it. how much does it cost?

  • you should have a contest to see who can fit the most functional attachments on to the bubo

  • @dizwiz12 Heh, you should let the Owle guys know, I'm sure they'd love the idea.

  • i dont see any difference at all if anything the iphone "unplugged" looks better

  • @specialK312 So you can't see the much wider field of view? you can't see the massive reduction in shake? those are the easiest significant differences to see, I find it difficult to believe you can't detect them at all.

  • It seems kind of pointless to have a product like that for just a 3 mega-pixel camera.

  • WHY?! not matter how god lenses you will adapt, this is still a phone...

  • That's the point. The fact that you can add lenses to your phone and make it look so damn good is amazing. Phones are not just phones anymore, they are media devices used to play and record media, and this just adds on to that.

  • @misha1985 As I've said before in this comments thread. Because the best camera is the one you have with you... sometimes you don't want or need to carry your big expensive equipment around, and some people enjoy the challenge of getting the very best they can out of a device with inerrant limitations like the iPhone. The best, most expensive paint-brushes don't make an artist good, it's how they use the tools they have.

  • so... post some sample photos... I can tell you without watching on them that there will be chromatic aberration and deformations. I dont see any sense, cameras in phones was made for point, shoot and send low quality photos via mms or email. If you want to have something like that there is a lot of small compact cameras with better lenses, built in xenon flash and other in the pocket - if you have to carry owle, you can carry a camera instead.

  • @misha1985 Okay, I'll bite... so which of those compact cameras allow you to do sophisticated editing, touch-ups, colour correcting, adding frames, text, etc etc etc, and then allow you to instantly upload those edited photos to a vast variety of photo sharing websites over 3G and wifi connections all from within the same device? how many of those compact cameras allow you to shoot, edit, alter, cut, trim and upload video in the same way? The iPhone can do that.
