There was indication that Caine's parents were murdered in season one. He always said they were simply dead. In the episode entitled Dark Angel when Caine meets his grandfather, Caine makes no mention of his parents being murdered. He just says that his father died at home in China. If his father was murdered by a warlord and did not mention this, that would be a major omission to say the least.
