I don't think Dr. Laura needs to apologize. Any word used in a hurtful way deserves an apology. She was discussing the use of the word. While I can't much comment on whether saying teh n-word was racist in and of itself, her caller was dealing with some serious racism from her husband's friends. And doctor Laura thought that wasn't a problem. So that's what she should have apologized for.

I don't think anyone should be asked to apologize on pain of losing their job on account of using a word. Particularly because she wasn't calling anyone "nigger" but just saying that there is a double standard with its usage.
The biggest problem is that instead of saying "Hey, this is why it's offensive", the PC moral crusade brigade just says NO U CANT USE DAT WORD" as if a rule is anywhere near as important as the reasoning behind it.

Whites ALWAYS call BLLLACKS hyper sensitive when they are FED UP with being questioned about what other blacks do (wrong). Telling the caller she shouldn't have married outside of her race for not having a sense of humour about this, only shows Laura her own issues with this particular issue. People like to claim they're offended these days, whether it's for attention, or they genuinely believe they're offended, I dunno. But they often don't take the context of the word into account. 'Fucking beautiful' is a compliment. It's got completely different connotations to 'fuck you', but lots of people can't see past the word. They fail to see that it's just a word. 'Nigger' is slightly different because of the history of the word, but the same does apply.

I agree with you 100 percent. The caller asked a racial question and also asked specifically about the use of the word nigger. Dr Laura didn't bring it up, the caller did. Dr. Laura was using the word nigger in an intellectual discussion, not in a derogatory fashion. Since it was a racial topic, of course it's going to be racial. A few things Laura said I think were wrong, but all in all, she's entitled to her opinion. Honestly the caller sounded more racist than Laura at times.

I also think it is a fallacy to believe "nigger" is just a word. Don't believe me? Ok. Tell me another word that has as much controversy behind it than "nigger". I think that black people being able to rise above the intentional degrading definition of the word nigger and are able to joke and use it causually is remarkable. That is a sign of stregnth that they earned and they changed and own the word nigger. To me it only represents an embarassing white term that I'm glad they find use for it now.
