Nice!!! This is so good, to see the under 20 crowd-enough of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, and all of that- It's so damn good to see the younger people!
I think the drummer is really playing. I think the sound is just way off on this clip. The playing isn't great, but acceptable. Much more than I'd expect from someone so young. You can tell by watching that his arms move in a consistent pattern so there's no reason to doubt he's playing. Just crappy internet syncing.
Much as I dig the Hornets, I notice the drummer's right hand stick is usually a good six inches from making contact with the snare! I suspect Ed Shaugnessey was 10 feet away, doing most of the drumming.
Still, one can't help admire the youthful impudence and elan on display here.
Gosh, this reminds me of a night in 1966 at Ohio University when a friend and I brought Gary & The Hornets to campus to headline a concert. (Max, are you still out there?) The boys were remarkable and wowed the crowd. By the way, their single of "A Kind of Hush" came out first and is vocally superior to the bigger hit version by Herman's Hermits. Hope life has treated The Hornets well. Bill
Gary & The Hornets' version of "A Kind of Hush" not only came out first but remains superior vocally to Herman's Hermits. Gosh, seeing them again brings back memories of an evening in 1967 in Athens, Ohio (at Ohio, University) when a friend and I brought Gary & The Hornets to campus to perform a concert. (Are you still out there Max?) The boys really had the crowd rockin'. Hope life has treated them well.
I've been in touch with Gary the last couple of years and he's doing okay. Greg's son, Casey, was in a popular band called Hawthorne Heights but passed away tragically a couple of years ago. The Calvert family took it hard, to say the least, but they're doing okay now.
This video leaves me with a deep nostalgia, that good times those, I have sought musica of this group by internet but them I have not found someone help me to say where find music of this band?
I've just noticed that wee Steve is a true southpaw!...How come it's always the drummer who is the cutest member in any band?!... (well, most of the time, anyway! ;-)
Tonight I had "Kind of Hush" stuck in my head for some reason, and I typed "Gary and the Hornets" in the search box expecting to come up with nothing. I should have known the YouTube community wouldn't let me down!
Can anybody out there tell me if there was a song called "Baby It's You" done by Gary & The Hornets back in the 60's or did I dream about it. I know there was a version done by The Shirelles and by a group called Smith but I'm almost sure I heard this done by Gary & The Hornets. I sure would like to know!! I would also like to hear it if someone has it.
Gary & The Hornets recorded a song called "Patty Girl", which was performed by early 70s cult band Big Star (featuring Alex Chilton of The Box Tops). The reformed 90s Big Star still included "Patty Girl" in some of their sets.
Not one of their better performances. Surprised they sang these two songs. Surgar Baby was the B side to their single A Kind of Hush. Perhaps the record company gave up on the single once Herman's Hermits released it. Anyone have their first Tonight Show appearance?
John Mellor aka Joe Strummer would have been 15 years old and NOT playing guitars. These kids and likely younger (and girls) had him beat.

Awesome clip. What a thrill it must have been for them to be on the Tonight Show. Anybody know what they are up to these days?

I was a DJ when these kids had a record "Baby it's You" It was number one for a couple of weeks on WTVB. Lots of fun!
Too bad the video is so weak.
Thanks for the post, YouTube!!
