I stumbled on this video while looking through my favorites (I commented on your caterpillar video before!) I must say you have created yet another beautiful piece. I found myself going into deep thought while listening to you play. I was suddenly filled with optimism and felt like everything was going to be ok. Thank you for that little bit of inspiration. :)
Hey again! I remember you! wow, i'm humbled that my little piece hit such a nice chord with you, that just makes me smile knowing that it brought a bit of enjoyment to someone else. I totally know what you mean with optimism and that 'everything will be ok' feeling coming from music, I have a couple bands that i listen to that always give me that feeling. I really had SO much fun creating it and playing it, and thanks for dropping by to check it out and comment!
You're very welcome! I think I was meant to stumble on it. I was having one of those crazy life realization days and this really helped put things in perspective for me. I probably sound nuts. :P
Since you love Sigur Rós, I really think you would like the band Múm. Unless you do already! They have been an all time favorite of mine for years.
My workshop is in my garage, it`s my haven, I love to make things in there. I don`t suppose you keep snakes aswell do you? lol I make some of my own vivariums in the workshop too. I actually got a decent tune out of it the other day ! Chuffed....
ahhh! my workshop is under my house alongside my garage too. but! I don't have any snakes, so i'm afraid that's where our hobby similarities split. but i've always wanted a snake as a pet hey, they are just so darn perfect as a cool boy's pet hey.
and heck yes on getting a nice tune out of the glock too! I can't wait to hear some of your melodies if you ever get a chance to upload them.
Oh hahahaa yes i`ll turn some little wooden balls out and pop them on some sticks ! Mallets :) I really do hope I can learn to play half as well as you in this clip :)
yes yes! wow, you sound like you dig a few things that I like as well. I don't have a lathe for turning out wooden things, but i love making wooden stuff in my workshop (under the house, not an actual workshop).
and you will play as good as me and probably better, I don't get to play much so you'll soon surpass me.
Oh I like it ! Even not knowing what i`m doing at all it still sounds nice ! If I can even half learn to play it i`ll be chuffed to tiny little kibbles and bits ! lol :D
First off, thanks for your email address dude, that'll be great for if and when I can send you some helpful tips.
and now onto your new toy! i'm so glad you got it already! oh my gosh you must be loving it. and i so agree and know what you mean, the instrument itself just sounds beautiful and pretty much anything you play on it sounds nice hey.
oh and the plastic mallets are fine too, you can even simply wrap masking tape around their tips to soften the sound, and then just take the tape off if you don't like it. you may end up preferring the plastic mallet sound anyway, see ya!
Oh nice one, that you very much ! I`ll send you a message with my e mail address I think... Yeah it sucks, so did the spinal surgery :( it`ll never get me down though :) I`ll have rubber tipped mallets first off. It should be here by now ! lol
Hey dude, I should have it today, I don`t have a musical historty but I`m very dextrous, I`m sure I`ll get it. I`m glad you said it almost drugs you into a musical state of mind, I`ll be using it to cope with chronic pain, as I use other things that involve an element of concentration. I`m so looking forward to this, I`ll give you a shout then ! Could you help with some simple "learner" melodies? It`s nice to see someone so interested in what they are doing....
ooh nice! You'll have to tell me what kind you get, and I highly recommend getting both rubberish tipped mallets, and soft clothed mallets. they both sound great in their own way. and the best thing about a glock is that you can use things like pens, chopsticks, and even your fingernails to tap out a melody on it. I played a two person melody on my friend's glock just last night and all we used was our fingernails. it's so fun.
and wow dude, that's so sucky about the chronic pain hey. i've only ever had serious tooth infection pain that kept me up at night and that musn't compare at all to yours. wow. i can totally see why the concentration activities would help. so yes, drug up on the music! and i can totally help with some learner melodies, of course i'd have to make them up first to show you, but i'm totally down for that.
wow, are you looking to buy a glock yourself? that's so cool, a new instrument is always such a fun thing to get. I can only say from my experience as to how difficult it is to play, and i've had a fair amount of musical instrument experience over the years with drumming, guitar and percussion.
The three things i've found that make playing a glockenspiel good is keeping good timing with the mallets, using the mallets to hit notes independant or each other (not at the same time), and knowing which notes to hit to make it all sound good.
For me, keeping time and having my hands use a mallet each to hit notes independently of each other was already learned because I have to do that when drumming. as for the notes, the glock is set up like a section of pianos keys, with white and black keys. (but i'm sure you already know that!) i don't know scales or piano much at all, so a lot of my glock playing has me sounding good for a few seconds then bam! wrong note that sounds horrible.
So I end up sort of memorising and building a sort of loop melody with different parts, that I can gradually make more and more detailed. This melody i played in this video was made up one night, and i practised for about an hour on it before I actually filmed it.
That's all probably waaaaaay more explanation than you wanted, but there you go! Give me a yell if you want any more tips on how to get cool melodies out of it, (as if i'm a pro or something?! Heck no!) but for now just sit down in a nice spot and have fun with it. it totally almost drugs you when you play it because it's so fun.
I'm not sure what brand the glockenspiel is, but it's a traditionaly glockenpiel in the sense that it's keys are metal. This one has the metal keys mounted on a wooden frame with small felt softening pieces under the points where the metal keys are riveted to the wood.
The mallets I used were smallish ball end mallets that have a knitted material covering which gives them the softened sound. they're my favourite ones to use on the glock.
I gotta get one of these.

Yay it turned up finally ! The malets are a bit plasticy, I could do with some wooden ones I think, but cool, time to start learning ! :)
