the MK IV put a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths. those were total nightmares and nothing but check engine light after check engine light. i just love seeing the vw vs honda war. drive whatever you want its a car who cares?
What I don't get it is why VW don't last as long as Toyota and Honda in term of long terms liability?? You would think by now VW figure that out by now. Are there more things going on under the hood in VW??
I HATE th4e name "Golf", my 1980 Rabbit was the best car I ever owned and I liked THAT name just fine! (I also owned an '88 Golf....unfortunately made in Penn USA by UAW workers....piece of junk!)
good to know...i had a 2003 vw gti automatic for a year until the engine light turned on. It was my first VW and i was afraid it was the beginning of things to come so I trade in the VW for a new Scion XB. Before the VW I drove Japanese cars with no issues.
My Uncle Ralph used to own a VolksWagon Golf, 4 Door TDI it was a great subcompact, he had a 06 model and it was a very nice car, If you want a fuel effecient car, I would recomand this car with a Diessel engine because you get better Gas mileage than you do with the hybrid and it last longer than the hybrid.
@DJTEVAdotCOM They are great cars, I just wouldn't bother get one with auto or too many power options. they always seem to be the ones with issues. Yes they are not as good as the japanese in reliability, but it's not like they brake down everyday. My only issue I've with my VWs was the ignition coil cracking. But for me, there must always be a VW in my driveway.
@DJTEVAdotCOM my vw has been perfect . never had a problem with it . always just basic maintenance. vw is very reliable. maybe u just had bad luck wiht yours
@tvain86 i had a piece of plastic tube replace for $80. My VW dealership wants to rip me off $90 for oil change. Then they said I have $800 od wear N Tear not cover in warranty...need i say more??
@DJTEVAdotCOM u need get extensive cover then . and another thing never take your vw to a vw dealership for service. sorry to hear they ripped you off. but you dont want to see the bills for bmw , mercs, and audis. i service my vw myself. its pretty easy. if u want everything to be done for u . u gonna have to pay for it. u need to remember VW owns audi, lamborghini, bugatti, skoda. so they are all about making money !
LOL..I know, I am glad too, I used to have a rabbit back in the 80's and my father always made fun about that. Who would drive a rabbit??? he asked freqently?
@Themadfarter1976 because the euro emissions standards are less then us wich is why they can get good gas milage and why they arent allowed in us. Once in the us and following us emission standards they loose gas mileage especially if they are diesel
@Logan04PB That's total bullshit, It's the other way around in most US states cars don't even have to have a direct fuel injection or even a catalytic converter not even mentioning particulate filters. A lot of cars in the US aren't allowed in the EU because of them being environmental disasters, especially when it comes to muscle cars and some cars from the brand Hummer.
Good Diesels btw are "cleaner" then petrol driven cars when you count in the higher efficiancy degree of Diesel engines.
@Raffix394 No you try importing any european car to the us especially diesel watch you get red flagged. Why not instead of being a complete ass you actaully do the research, look into the different standards and also the us import laws.
@Themadfarter1976 good cars? You in US got nice and full equipment cars with big engines and full of horses power. And big trucks (i want one, and I'll never get one because of gas prices (about 2$ per LITER) Europe sucks (in some ways) I want to see this "big" american life. We in europe have shitty cars with small engines and it's still big price of rusty cars not like in US big, nice and strong car.
Not with TDI engine you'll be surprise if you try it ! But the engine has a bad noise ! not sexy i agree but performance are here with the new common rail TDI.
Car looks better then the current rabbit. I never liked the plastic rub strips on the current gen and the front fascia and headlights seem to fit smoother.
The Golf must be the original name for this car.....not rabbit.
For Mexico and the rest of Countries of America this car is called Golf and I expect to get one from Mexico Plant once it's bring to USA, because the Rabbit was awful headache in sales for his technicals problems and the expensive cost to bring from Germany to USA.
5 Cylinder eh.. That'll be pretty neat to see how it turns out.. Still won't touch the 200 Hp VR6! So why waste money on that.. Other than the looks!!! :D
Gosh why do they still offer the 5 zylinder engine in the US instead of introducing the 1.4 liter TSI (turbo + supercharger) with 160 hp we have in Germany for almost three years now
The 5-cyl has 170 hp and only gets marginally worse fuel economy than the 1.4TSI. It also runs on regular fuel while the TSI requires premium. I'm actually quite happy with my Rabbit (which has the 5-cyl). It's a strong, reliable engine and it sounds fantastic when revved. The TSI would probably be too expensive for the US market, but it would be a neat option anyway I suppose. :)
Remember that a gallon is different in American and Imperial measurements. So it's really about 24/37 MPG (I think) for the TSI when using American measurements. I regularly return an average 28 MPG in my Rabbit. And regular unleaded in the US is only 87 octane, while premium is 91 octane. I don't know if "ROZ" is the same as octane...but if that's the case I don't even know where one would buy anything higher than 91 around where I live. Totaly weird, right? lol
Oh...my mistake. I'd been told that the TSI returned significantly lower fuel economy than that. 30/45 is very impressive for an engine with that much power. Similar to the 2.0 TDI's fuel economy, actually. Now I'm a bit upset with my 2.5's gas mileage seeing how shitty it is in comparison to the 1.4TSI haha.
Hmm but im not really sure either. I simply took the stats from the German VW page and put them into the calculator. Maby the test procedure in the US is different from the european one.
But its straight reasoning 2,5 liter naturally aspirated versus 1,4 liter turbo/supercharged - whos going to have better mileage........ You still got an advantge, your fuel is much cheaper and you paid way less than i would for comparable Golf. Im currently driving a 2.0TDI Scirocco with 140 hp - awesome car
Yeah, our tests are a lot different. They were revised for the 2008 model year and are stricter now, so new cars' mileage estimates are lower. I would love to have a Scirocco, but unfortunately we can't get that car here. VW's future US lineup is actually pretty depressing. We won't be able to buy the next generation Passat and will instead have a larger sedan "suited to American tastes" and built in the US. I'm sure it'll be another boring Camry clone like the other midsized sedans here.
There are some enthusiasts like you that would love to buy a Scirocco but thats not what the majority of the people in US want. They want fucking mini-vans whatever with lots of cupholders for their super sized coke.
It really is a shame but you have to unterstand VW, because the main thing they want to make is profit.

Marginally worse XD.... City: Rabbit: 21mpg , 1,4 TSI: 29 mpg......"Highway" Rabbit: 30 mpg, 1,4 TSI: 45 mpg.......there you go.
Dont know how it is in the US but we have Nomal (91 ROZ) Super (95 ROZ) Super-Plus(98 ROZ) and Shell V-Power, Aral Ultimate and so foth (100 ROZ).
The TSI runs on Super (95 ROZ).
But youre right that the TSI would be to expensive for the US-market and it probably wouldnt be acceptet if you can get a V8 Pickup for it XD
