  • I don't think Derren would want him in real danger

  • ITS CALLED CAMERA ANGLE! why would they bother moving a TRAIN?! HEELLO????

  • Just out of interest I know the music is not on the clip.... But does anybody recognise the music as they are walking away from the tracks ??? Anybody??? Please help

  • This is stupid. Were they supposed to actually run him over with a train? I don't about the camera trickery here, that is not the point.

  • @s12e12a12n The train on the siding is a point of reference for the moving train.

  • I was going leave a comment but everyone has already said it. Choice of lens when filming is not "camera trickery." It does not even qualify as an effect let alone a special effect. It is just a lens.

  • I think its true the train was further away. But remember Matt was in a straight jacket on a train track with no idea how to get out.... and he did....with some help from Derren

  • any one know what railway they used

  • Great video Mark. It opens up multiple questions such as "What is camera trickery, and what isn't?". Well, the truth is I don't know. But the golden rule is:

NEVER BELIEVE WHAT YOU SEE ON TV. ALL OF IT IS EDITED IN SOME WAY TO MAKE YOUR MIND RE-EVALUATE A SITUATON.

Excuse the caps, I just wanted other readers to acknowledge this easily without searching.

  • Nice spotting uploader! The train is much further away than it looks like!

  • The train is not onthe same track

  • The train is n

  • Soooo... I don't get the point of this video.

  • TO MANY BIG COMMENTS CANNOT TAKE THEM ALL!

  • no no look at the yellow 10 signits the same as in both shots look carefully you can tell its in the same spot in both shots

  • erm...yer thats fake..(NOT)

  • Have you forgotten about "Misdirection and showmanship"? Of course it was not that dangerous (if at all), but i bet Matt was really at the verge of crapping his pants. And that is what matters.

  • your use of the term "camera trickery" is somewhat stretched I feel. filming techniques like fore-shortening is a tool to create heightened tension, not necessarily to deceive. in my view it's like quick editing or specific lighting to emphasise (or help conceal) something. I think when Derren talks about camera trickery he means split screens/digital cgi/people or objects being superimposed/editing between more than one take...etc. the kind of thing people associate with camera trickery.

    I'

  • @johnlacuna Hi John, thanks for your constructive comment. i appreciate fully your points. i do feel however that Derrens producer should not have used fore-shortening techniques. This i believe is because the show is pushing to the limit as it is so putting in place camera tension techniques puts in my mind doubts on the whole integrity of the journey.

  • @mjarve hi! After watching Derren Brown for sometime now, i realise that he is using actors and actresses because most of the time their reactions dont seem real (a prime example would be the casino stunt where he supposedly lost 5k of someone elses money). He says he doesnt use actors or stooges, but that is one of the golden rules of magic..............U DO!!!!!!

  • @mjarve Derren's a class act magician, however.... He's working on TV, and frankly, TV viewers want suspense. We all know the train *had* to be moving slow enough to stop before running over the poor sap. So they used dramatic tension to heighten the moment.

  • @mjarve Fortunately now you have the missing information for future consideration on camera work, Stop fooling yourself with Mental Short Cuts without the proper information

  • @MoonBoy1200 Hia Goonboy, Fore shortening techniques are all well and good in action movies but in a show like Derrens, it kinda put doubts in my mind as to what else he uses camera manipulation on.

  • @mjarve You are a person that lives around the same materials as other people live around, Consider Useful Creativity Methods from others with the materials around us or you will live in doubt with the materials around us till an Opportunity/Chance that gives you Useful knowledge such as what we are doing at the moment on Youtube.

    Do you Create?

You need more Information on the how and whys on the Media side of the world

  • @mjarve

Couldn't agree more, Derren pulls once again a remarkable show so there is no need to use camera tension techniques to make it "look better" on TV. There are anyway only 2 kind of people, those who love Derren's work and appreciate his many talents and those who scream "fake", I wouldn't try to please the latter group. Still you should probably rethink your approach to Derren's work, calling it TRICKERY is exaggerating. Take care.

  • @Tygrychu Noted :)

  • @johnlacuna Well we already know he lied about not using split screen because that's how he did the lottery prediction trick.

  • @McSuperfly101 now thats just nitpicking, he means superimposing a shot over half of another shot, the same way that people "clone" themselves in movies, not just using a split screen to show you whats going on in 2 different places at once

  • @hXc232 Ummm... that's exactly how Derren did his lottery prediction mate. The half of the screen with the balls sitting in the tray was a 'clone' and in reality a stagehand was putting the correct numbered balls into place as they were called out.

  • @McSuperfly101 oh fair enough, didnt know that

  • Oooooh... a telephoto lens. What trickery!

  • i love derren brown your jealous your not him...

  • Of course, it could just be that the camera was far away and zoomed in. Different focal lengths make things appear closer or further away. Zooming in makes the background appear closer to the foreground. Maybe it was an organic side-effect of the camera positions, or maybe it was a deliberate decision to intensify the drama. I guess we'll never know.

  • Im not doubting anyone else its just my opinion!!

  • i volunteer at the railway used. Im not going to say where it is but i can tell you that the train is 100% real, ive ridden it myself. Its a British railcar 55006 class 22. If you also look at the wooden crossing he stays next to it all the time. I know its not been moved as i have ridden on the same piece of track and there are no signs of a disturbance. Its just the camera pespective.

  • it was all fake i hardley doubt the guy wears gstar 24/7 even when he's asleep he obviosly got sponsered that means he must of known about every thing

  • @CGLGlitches blatently...... *facepalm*

  • what difference would it have if it was the camera trick, the whole idea was for it to work on matt.... so regardless of whether it is or it's not (im still not convinced) it wouldn't make sense for derren to use a camera trick on matt in a live situation...

  • You do realise they had to shove over 90 days recordings into a 60 minute show right?

Derren also answered a lot of questions on his blog, you should probably read them.

  • the trick was is suppose to work with that guy on the show not you or us! We all know it’s not true, its obvious, have you seen how slow was the train..this guy will break loos faster because he feels danger and that will prepare him mentally for the next step....did you think that Derren will tied him down in front of real train!! you just totally missed the point dude.

  • @DSSNTC Thanks for your input, glad you found it engaging enough to respond. Of course it's not true otherwise Derren Brown would use his 'powers' to pull the lottery stunt every week ;-)

I do think you missed the point I was making. My point as stated in the video is that the train shot was quite clearly done using camera trickery to maker the train appear much much closer than it was. Something which Derren claims he does not do.

  • @DSSNTC Oh, and I think it was a real train unsure why you believe it wasn;t? I checked the footage a few times and looked kosher to me?

    Regards

    Mark

  • @mjarve I believe that DSSNTC meant the train wasn't in use, as in it wasn't carrying passangers, it would've been a train they'd rented/owned. Passenger trains depending on the lines travel upto 60mph, that train looked to be doing at best 15 mph. Also, at one point it gives you a from the train camera angle, his intention was to never put the guys life at risk.

  • @mjarve Also the camera techniques are there to highten the suspense, as otherwise that part of the show wouldn't be that gripping, for the guy taking part I don't think he'd care about camera techniques for him, his life was on the line and the techniques used are to try and bring our level of suspense to that of Matt
