Well, gotta consider this is a novel adaptation, where the author can usually be more gutsy about his plot. Oshii was gutsy too not to sweeten up the movie for the audience (any more than he did), but then again, he's got a big enough name to get away with it. I don't like it when a character i like dies, but if nothing else, it was worth it just to foil my expectations, which is not a merit unto itself, but had enough substance to be stand on it's own right, methinks.
I think the ending had a cool twist but at the same time I also think that it was kinda sad only because Kanami learned alot during his time that the other pilots didnt know or didnt care because they were bred to take orders and fight, they knew nothing else, but Kanami was different, he kinda learned how to live like a normal human, but then he died and his clone comes and he knows nothing, back to square one
While I thought the main character's demise was disturbing, having him defeat the Teacher wouldn't solve the Kildred's problem of being the unfortunate eternal puppets of peace, but it still could've happened. To me, the bleak ending doesn't really do much for Kannami's words to Kusanagi during the night office scene. It makes me wonder if she'll even go through with what he told her, and try to find out what these corporations are doing with the Kildred.
There's nothing good about a happy ending if it serves no purpose. Sad or bleak endings actually can be far more interesting. I would say in any good happy ending is also an element of melancholy. I don't understand why this should be even an issue worth mentioning. And ending is an ending. It fits or not.
if the ending would be happy than it would be just another happy shounen movie... I think I'm talking for most of the ppl that the ending was quite right!.
And that scene only made it more sad, that wasn't Kannami that came to the base, it was just another one of the clones, it poves he died, if his ship getting shot by The Teacher wasn't proof enough.
A year late, but here's a rough stab at translating what you wrote:
"I was very moved after watching this anime, I couldn't help but feel that the final actions of the male lead were, in some way, irresponsible. It just feels like such a tragic waste."
This track never fails to give me a lump in my throat starting from 1:40. From that point, the music evokes a sense of grim finality, painting a scene of doomed airmen embarking on a mission from which they won't return.
Hayao is part of Studio Ghibli, not production I.G. When this movie was released in Japan, Miyazaki was working on "Ponyo". They do draw...a bit similar. But Miyazaki takes the more cartoonish end of the stick, whilst Tetsuya Nishio (the man in charge of character designs) and Mamoru Oshii (the director) draw a little more realistically.
The film's majesty is only enhanced by the beauty of the soundtrack. It reduces me to tears.

A neverending war in which the soldiers cannot die, nothing is gained and nothing is lost, that's the ultimate torment.

The artwork here sort of reminds me of this game called "Ace Combat 4".

I think its a realistic and good ending. Sometimes the hero doesn't, or shouldn't, come back home alive and/or well.
In this case many airmen, in world war 2 and some wars beyond, died in the sky when everyone expected them to return home.

原作を読むと最後に監督が死を設定した背景がわかります。
「可哀想なんかじゃない」草薙(ナ・バ・テア)
死という概念が、キルドレと原作者の森氏が言う大人との間では異なるのです。

The anime is very interesting. When comes the battle part you wont be able to take your eyes off it

Glad to hear that.
Of course the ending was sad.
But I was amazed that Hayao Miyazaki took part of making this anime.
tokyoteam 2 years ago
really? that's cool
Zinferbuddy 2 years ago
Yes that is rather cool considering that its hard to understand that it was Hayaoi Miyazaki's drawing that was used in the anime.
tokyoteam 2 years ago
Actually it wasn't Hayao. It was Takashi Watanabe and Kazuo Nagai who did the drawing, as well as the man in charge of Ghost in the Shell Innocence.
