  • This is my no.1 Hues Corporation hit.Love it.

  • I remember this song by Three Dog Night on their 1972 album, "Seven Separate Fools". The Hues Corporation did a very nice version of this song!

  • NO dislikes? I'll have to change that...muhahahha

  • i remembe this be for rock the boat great song

  • I have this record great old song

  • i have been years looking for the original sample of 9th wonder! That's the good shit!

  • Wow,for years i have ask people if they know this song,no one did..I thought i was remembering thing wrong lol ...

  • One of the best songs ever! Lost but not forgotten, I hadn't heard it in years but I hum it all the time. Those of you who grew up with this music, can you remember those steel muscle cars, two tons of gas and pass!! Eight track stereos...the early cassettes, these tunes playing in the car as you rolled down the Blvd? Homecoming games, and the simplicity of life? I sure do...makes me think of this song and freedom we once all knew. Life was so much more simple. Miss that...don't you

  • Tony Orlando And Dawn have a version also! Both versions sound awsome!

  • me and my m8s use to always request this song on the radio

  • I knew this song from when it was played as a current Top 30 record on WNHC New Haven CT. WNHC was sort of a hybrid AC/POP station, I guess what would be called a HOT AC today. Peaked at #9 on Billboards AC Chart.

  • classic yeah da bomb....bring back da gud ole daysssssssssssssssss

  • Been looking for this song forever..greal post!!!

  • @blexacano33 Thank you!

  • braveheart would have loved this..:)

  • I recall a concert in the 70s when a group led by a good friend of mine, in performing this song, started a little too high pitch. When they reached the "mercy' part he put his hand up in the air, indicating that was where he intended to go! We could easily have gone back out and paid to re-enter. It was hilarious. They stopped, restarted the song, and did a marvelous job. Guess what everybody remembers ... .

  • THIS IS THE ONLY VERSION I HAVE HEARD AND I LOVE IT!

  • THIS IS THE ONLY VERSION i REMEMBER.

  • I was 5yrs old when this song was released, but I first heard it in the early 80's, and ever since then I've loved this song. I hadn't heard it in ages, (now 43yrs), until I found it on utube :) Sure is Pure Easy Listening Music:)

  • COMO É BOM OUVIR UMA MUSICA QUE TOCA O NOSSO CORAÇÃO,ME FEZ CHORAR !!

  • omg, i forgot all about this song! i remember this when i first started college in september, 1973! i love this song! thanks so much for posting this!

  • This is one of my dad's favorite songs. I've been looking for the mp3 at the iTunes and Amazon stores so he can play it on his iPod, but no online music store seems to have it. Does anyone know where I'd be able to find it? Please let me know!

  • @nwilhelmy There are online sites that will rip the mp3 from the video. You can also download realplayer which will enable you download the video and then there is freeware that will rip the mp3 from that.

  • Great rendition. Good by Edward Bear too.

  • Great harmonies here... Thanks for posting, Mr.Trashcan!!

  • This is so Unique, Pretty & Different!

I've got it in my Basement Somewhere!

    Just Too Beautiful!

  • I did-got play over WLAP and WVLK in Lexingotn KY in late summer 1973.

  • @bellbrookbob Thanks for that!

  • Thanks for posting!

  • Been listening to Elvis Costello's new album that he made with Allen Toussaint and they do a cover of this an as soon as I heard it I knew I had to find it an learn it! Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!!

  • what ever happened to the Hues Corp.

  • Back when black music was " Soul music " ! So damn good !!

  • This song, this group SHOULD have gone all the way!! Incredible!!! Everything was and is so political that genuine talent is often unrewarded!! I wish they would re-record thus song! Are they alive and well? Does anyone know?

  • It failed to reach top 40 pop, but I'm fairly certain it was top 20 R & B and I KNOW it was top 10 A/C. Fine tune.

  • Nice one Mr. Trashcan. Yes, I remmeber hearing this on Picadilly radio261 in manchester, Uk 1973. They were an indepedent radio station in the Uk and played lots of stuff like this and yes, this is brill!!

  • This was the beginning of disco.

  • this is manifisent.. wat a long time ago that i heard this..wow didnt think i would ever hear this song again.. thanks for a whole lifetime of memorys MrTrashcan1..

  • I never heard this version by the Hues Corp until now. It is amazing how very similar their recording sounds to an early 1970's version by the Oak Ridge Boys. The trumpet is identical and the background harmony nearly identical and the "mercy" part sung by Joe Bonsall is dead on for the Hues Corp. version. If I knew how to upload the Oak Ridge Boys version from i tunes I would so all could hear.

  • Great post! Possibly the best song of it's year and release. Loved these guys to start with, but this song...as obscure as it is today, got loads of play time back in '73...just didn't have the juice to last. Too bad...a great song for sure.

  • Their version is the best in my opinion.

  • @behdoc yes, it is! i agree wi' chu.

  • This is a fantastic song. There are versions out there by Three Dog Night, and Lee Dorsey just to name a few. I have at least 4 covers of this tune. @MrTrashcan1 I have subscribed to your channel. Awesome posts.

  • @tuneman45 Thank you very much!

  • freedom for the baby childdd........

  • Great, great song from one of the golden eras of music. Does anyone have there other great soul song " I Love You A Lot" i cannot find it anywhere.

  • @jackfruitkey i have a cd of their greatest and it includes "go to the poet" and "miracle maker" as well as "soul sailing." once i learn how to down load this stuff i will put it on here. these are also wonderful songs by Hues co. I thank whoever put freedom for he stallion on here.

  • @venumzgurl that would be great if you could post those songs too do remember "Go To The Poet" mainly jusy beautiful.

  • What a classical piece. This is really worth listening . i just love it. Thanks for posting. Wonderful memories.

  • This is the unsung hero of 1973. Thanks so much for bringing this masterpiece to youtube. I found this on an oldies c.d. in 2004.

  • It was on Sunday night Slow Jams on power 103.7 on an Abilene station,

  • I heard this song recently one night on the radio and I simply loved it. I looked for it here and I have it on my Tagged as one of my favorite. I just cannot stop listening to it ...I LOVE IT!!!!

  • @Blessings070 You heard it recently on the radio? Can you tell us what station?

  • music like this never dies, a truly great song of the early 70's.....oh what memories

  • Someone just wrote me to ask if this song was about going commando.

  • Thank you, another one I can knock off my wishlist of "stolen vinyl I'll try to get back with the help of youtube" : )

  • great track, havent heard this one before, know rock the boat, however my favourite track is I'll Take a Melody, cant find it on You Tube

  • @aintreegas I've got "I'll take a melody" on an LP - it's a very old LP and a little bit scratcchy sounding - but when I get time I will dig it out and upload ... btw that is one of my fvs of T H C also - that and "Ali Baba's Got The Blues" ... but no one seems to have heard of that ...

  • @booth2710 - yes pls! been searching for that song for years :)

  • Lovely song.

  • the good ole days.....

  • Excellent! Any chance of their songs "Miracle Maker" or "Go to the Poet" from the same album?

Many thanks for the song and video!

  • Another terrific Hues Corporation song is" Soul Sailin'"...I miss you on YouTube, Mr.T1!

  • I remember in '73 that I heard this was a Dylan song. True?

  • Written by Allen Toussaint. Also performed by Boz Scaggs, Three Dog Night and Elvis Costello.

  • actually, until right now i'd never heard this song by anyone other than tony orlando and dawn. it's on one of their albums and i fell in love with it in the 70's. i looked for tony's version, saw the hues corp. and knew i liked their hit don't rock the boat and gave this a listen. it's awesome, but i swear, tony's is awesome too.

  • Thanks, I'll definitely have to check out Tony's version. But this is the one that received airplay and charted.

  • @MrTrashcan1

Do you (or anyone) have the Three Dog Night version?

  • @MrTrashcan1 Also performed by Edward Bear...

  • One of my All Time Favs

    Brilliant!

  • They also appeared in a movie and it's soundtrack album a year before, called Blacula, which was produced by Gene Page. You can see a clip of their performance on youtube.

  • classic song brings back memories when i was 6 years old.....do u have" go to the poet" thinks its on same album..beautiful just beautiful

  • Love this!

    Thanks for posting!

  • ....absolute beauty!! I'm sad that Fleming Williams died actually so recently.I was a bit young in the days of this song to get deep down into an artist, but would have loved to get into his life in the years before '98.Hail Fleming Williams!

  • Great post!!

  • By any chance does anyone know the movie they used this song in? The first time i heard it was in the 70's on vinyl and the radio and then in one of my all time favorite movies as a kid but unfortunately it wasn't a bit hit movie back then and this was the song the movie ended with. Any help would be forever appreciated. Thanks for sharing a great memory i have of my youth!!

  • One Love To Tha 9th Wondert & Sick Buckshot............they give that song new life ;)

  • This is such a great blast from the past that evokes so many memories and really stirs up the senses. The touching and very meaningful words sung so well along with your nicely done visuals is truly an enjoyable and special experience!! One of my favorites ever by an incredibly talented group!! You are the only one on You Tube that has this version and I am sure glad for this!!

  • I knew them before Rock The Boat. This song was played on Picadilly radio before they became famous. SUPERB posting and what a classic song.

  • Thank you kindly!

  • This song still brings more than a tear to my eyes. Beautiful lyrics from the genius Allen Toussaint (god bless him)...the harmonies here you'll never hear again today.

  • How beautiful...

  • so they replaced the original guy singing "rock the boat" right?

  • This song came before Rock The Boat, so the guy singing this was the original. He was replaced after Rock The Boat.

  • The original male lead singer, Fleming Williams died in 1998. His date of death is often mistakenly stated as 1992. The only original is St. Clair Lee (the one with the headband).

  • I don't remember this song but I love it! I was looking for "Rockin Soul".

  • Another overlooked Hues Corporation tune is "Soul Sailin'"

  • Freedom is that instant between when someone tells you to do something and when you decide how to respond.

  • Is it really freedom if you spend so much time still thinking about it?

  • Me too,me too! A fantastic song that shudda been a bigger hit!

  • i did! i did! lol I could never understand why this wasn't a big hit, it seemed to fit the early 70's mood perfectly. I thought.

  • Hmm...

I remember the Three dog night version.

    This is nice.

  • yep, I remember both versions, liked both of em too. Have been lookin for it by 3 dog night too

  • I remember hearing this song on the radio in Washington, DC.

  • My pleasure, Johnny. Let me know if/when the radio station is broadcasting again.

  • Thanks for adding this RARE song,Howard!
