One of the best songs ever! Lost but not forgotten, I hadn't heard it in years but I hum it all the time. Those of you who grew up with this music, can you remember those steel muscle cars, two tons of gas and pass!! Eight track stereos...the early cassettes, these tunes playing in the car as you rolled down the Blvd? Homecoming games, and the simplicity of life? I sure do...makes me think of this song and freedom we once all knew. Life was so much more simple. Miss that...don't you
I knew this song from when it was played as a current Top 30 record on WNHC New Haven CT. WNHC was sort of a hybrid AC/POP station, I guess what would be called a HOT AC today. Peaked at #9 on Billboards AC Chart.
I recall a concert in the 70s when a group led by a good friend of mine, in performing this song, started a little too high pitch. When they reached the "mercy' part he put his hand up in the air, indicating that was where he intended to go! We could easily have gone back out and paid to re-enter. It was hilarious. They stopped, restarted the song, and did a marvelous job. Guess what everybody remembers ... .
I was 5yrs old when this song was released, but I first heard it in the early 80's, and ever since then I've loved this song. I hadn't heard it in ages, (now 43yrs), until I found it on utube :) Sure is Pure Easy Listening Music:)
omg, i forgot all about this song! i remember this when i first started college in september, 1973! i love this song! thanks so much for posting this!
This is one of my dad's favorite songs. I've been looking for the mp3 at the iTunes and Amazon stores so he can play it on his iPod, but no online music store seems to have it. Does anyone know where I'd be able to find it? Please let me know!
@nwilhelmy There are online sites that will rip the mp3 from the video. You can also download realplayer which will enable you download the video and then there is freeware that will rip the mp3 from that.
Been listening to Elvis Costello's new album that he made with Allen Toussaint and they do a cover of this an as soon as I heard it I knew I had to find it an learn it! Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!!
This song, this group SHOULD have gone all the way!! Incredible!!! Everything was and is so political that genuine talent is often unrewarded!! I wish they would re-record thus song! Are they alive and well? Does anyone know?
Nice one Mr. Trashcan. Yes, I remmeber hearing this on Picadilly radio261 in manchester, Uk 1973. They were an indepedent radio station in the Uk and played lots of stuff like this and yes, this is brill!!
this is manifisent.. wat a long time ago that i heard this..wow didnt think i would ever hear this song again.. thanks for a whole lifetime of memorys MrTrashcan1..
I never heard this version by the Hues Corp until now. It is amazing how very similar their recording sounds to an early 1970's version by the Oak Ridge Boys. The trumpet is identical and the background harmony nearly identical and the "mercy" part sung by Joe Bonsall is dead on for the Hues Corp. version. If I knew how to upload the Oak Ridge Boys version from i tunes I would so all could hear.
Great post! Possibly the best song of it's year and release. Loved these guys to start with, but this song...as obscure as it is today, got loads of play time back in '73...just didn't have the juice to last. Too bad...a great song for sure.
This is a fantastic song. There are versions out there by Three Dog Night, and Lee Dorsey just to name a few. I have at least 4 covers of this tune. @MrTrashcan1 I have subscribed to your channel. Awesome posts.
@jackfruitkey i have a cd of their greatest and it includes "go to the poet" and "miracle maker" as well as "soul sailing." once i learn how to down load this stuff i will put it on here. these are also wonderful songs by Hues co. I thank whoever put freedom for he stallion on here.
I heard this song recently one night on the radio and I simply loved it. I looked for it here and I have it on my Tagged as one of my favorite. I just cannot stop listening to it ...I LOVE IT!!!!
@aintreegas I've got "I'll take a melody" on an LP - it's a very old LP and a little bit scratcchy sounding - but when I get time I will dig it out and upload ... btw that is one of my fvs of T H C also - that and "Ali Baba's Got The Blues" ... but no one seems to have heard of that ...
actually, until right now i'd never heard this song by anyone other than tony orlando and dawn. it's on one of their albums and i fell in love with it in the 70's. i looked for tony's version, saw the hues corp. and knew i liked their hit don't rock the boat and gave this a listen. it's awesome, but i swear, tony's is awesome too.
They also appeared in a movie and it's soundtrack album a year before, called Blacula, which was produced by Gene Page. You can see a clip of their performance on youtube.
....absolute beauty!! I'm sad that Fleming Williams died actually so recently.I was a bit young in the days of this song to get deep down into an artist, but would have loved to get into his life in the years before '98.Hail Fleming Williams!
By any chance does anyone know the movie they used this song in? The first time i heard it was in the 70's on vinyl and the radio and then in one of my all time favorite movies as a kid but unfortunately it wasn't a bit hit movie back then and this was the song the movie ended with. Any help would be forever appreciated. Thanks for sharing a great memory i have of my youth!!
This is such a great blast from the past that evokes so many memories and really stirs up the senses. The touching and very meaningful words sung so well along with your nicely done visuals is truly an enjoyable and special experience!! One of my favorites ever by an incredibly talented group!! You are the only one on You Tube that has this version and I am sure glad for this!!
This song still brings more than a tear to my eyes. Beautiful lyrics from the genius Allen Toussaint (god bless him)...the harmonies here you'll never hear again today.
The original male lead singer, Fleming Williams died in 1998. His date of death is often mistakenly stated as 1992. The only original is St. Clair Lee (the one with the headband).
This is my no.1 Hues Corporation hit.Love it.
