i appreciate it on so many levels; how they worked with the budget that was given to them,;how due to the low-pay the two (amazing) leads were willing to take, they give these performances that aren't driven by they paycheck, but from a need to tell this story with all the talent they can muster; the look of the movie, the score, the pacing... it's all so good.
I've seen over 700 movies, and not only is Narc in my top 30, but this opening sequence is easily in the top ten best openings I've ever seen. It's absolutely horrific, and extremely well done. I knew a guy that was an undercover narcotics officer, and this matches the kind of things he described. Unreal.
what's brilliant about this scene is how much detail we learn about the character and the world that he lives in through the whole opening two minutes.
The small details of the environment: filthy yards, the car alarm, the blue-tint (making everything seem so cold), the voices and wind-tunnel effect as he runs between buildings.
One of the best opening sequences I've ever seen! To this day I can still hear the gargling of the guy stabbed and the scream Patric lets out at the end. Unforgettable! Both Patric and Liotta's performances are so believable and well acted. I can't recommend this film enough if you are looking for a real good drama.
@LoversFashion Unrealistic? Are You Joking? The movie and scene is totally realistic, and yes a bullet can ricochet and bounce and strike someone if that is what you're referring to, I've seen it happen.
@KleWdSide terrible editing you dumb fuck?? how can you jump a fuckin wall holding a fuckin camera????? its imposible thats why it looks that way... i think its amazing...
@KleWdSide Im sure Joe Carnahan thinks the same thing and would love to redo that one little moment but he didnt have the money to do that. In fact, there was so little money into making this movie that Ray Liotta and Jason Patric did the film for free as they love the script and didnt want to see the film being shutdown.
Anyway, I don't care about the wall climbing, it doesn't distract me from the rest of the scene. Joe and his editor mention about the wall climb on the dvd commentary.
@cypher47 prob od, 2 needles full of i'm guessing heroin...thats crazy shit man i've never seen that in a movie...ballsy...in the top 5 of my fav movies for sure

@Fluffy65 He's not a very good undercover narcotics officer if you knew he was one. Plus he wouldn't be telling people something like that.

Holy shit.
That was hands down, one of the most INTENSE Opening Scenes to a movie , EVER.
Inernal Affairs would have a FIELD day with this case, jesus.
Deep cover, blown somehow.....and this shit happens?
Was the cop chasing him high on drugs?, considering in some undercover situations you have to USE the actual drugs....to be believable.
