Lord Have Mercy!....That's the kind of church I'm talking about. I've got goose bumps. I love good gospel singing and good preaching that make you want to shout. If I could ever be blessed to find a church home like that, I would be so devoted and look forward to all services. But these days is getting harder and harder to find a church that is so spirit filled like this.
@tommiexander Don't know where you live, but if you are ever in Delaware, you can find church like this at Higher Ground International Ministries under the leadership of Apostle Linda D. Henry. Services so serious, sometimes worship is as far as we can go. Once the Holy Spirit comes in, all you can do is PRAISE! Halle-loo somebody!
Im sorry, but I had to get up from my desk...I turned the volume up on my comp..and I got my shout on right there in my cubicle at work, with my lunch gettin' cold. I wasnt feelin' Erma, screamin' and hollerin', and runnin' back and forth, with those gramma shoes that looked like she got 'em on sale, at Lerners...but I was DEFINITLEY feelin' Aretha gettin' her Gospel on, when that choir kicked into overdrive with "Ol' Landmark"...yea, I feelin' that.
Having recently read Aretha's autobiography "From These Roots", and being aware of the fact that Cancer claimed the lives of her brother Cecil, and both of her sisters Erma & Carolyn.........it's extremely touching to observe this video, knowing how much Aretha truly adored her siblings, and cherished the relationship she had with each of them. I admire & respect the God-given talent of Ms. Aretha Franklin more than I can adequately express. God bless her.
no one can do it like ReRe...he songs come straight from her soul to her mouth. no interference. but what amazes me is that she makes it look effortless. She is completely at peace as she BLOWS the roof down. I mean she could be making dinner, wash the dishes and still tear it UP.
I have to laugh, cuz Aretha never in all of her recordings and TV appearances gotten that call and response sequence to OL LANDMARK right. It's hard to remember the order. LOL
This was my Pastor...The late great Charles Nicks from the St. James Baptist church...It's where I went on sundays as a child........Thank you for the memories
I am so glad to find this - I remember watching this program. I recorded it on a Beta tape recorder but now don't have a Beta player so I haven't been able to watch the program. Thank you so much.
This was THE best concert I have ever seen with Aretha Franklin. This white boy has never seen a better rendition of the Old Landmark ever - IMHO. Wish I couldna been there.
Watch all of this concert - Aretha was in great form.
Some people forget, or maybe they just don't pay attention, but Erma was the ELDER sister. She didn't sing like Aretha, it was the other way around. In 1968, both Erma and Aretha were nominated for grammies in the same category. Guess who won? Oh well, Erma was gracious about it. And obviously very proud and supportive of her younger sister. This is a wonderful video.
Now, many of us have not forgotten that Erma could sing as well. However, Aretha had a uniqueness about her voice that was unmatched by no one, even today. Hence, her name became simple, "Aretha" without the Franklin, because when you said Aretha, everyone knew who you were talking about.. I also remember lil sister Carolyn, who graduated from Northern High School. She wrote absolutely beautiful songs, and passed awy in ol' Sinai Hospital. St James & Charles Nicks were also old "Friends."
Because she sang so long and hard during this concert that she started lossing her voice during the end of the show. I have this entire concert on tape, as it was aired on Showtime back in the early 80's.
Actually, the entire concert is already on YouTube ... you just have to look up each song she sang, such as, put these in your search engine on YouTube : Rev. Charles Nicks, Jr., Aretha Franklin Concert. Comments by Rev. Nicks, Sidney Holmes, Cecil Franklin
and this: Aretha Franklin - Who's zoomin' who 1985
and this: Aretha Franklin - "Look To The Rainbow"
These were all a part of her concert in Detroit in 1985 at the Mosanic Temple and shown on Showtime
This is purely Detroit Sunday mornig Gospel at it's best! Makes me homesick.....for the Old Landmark! Thanks so much for sharing this very special clip!
OHHH JESUSSS!!! i don't know where to start first-when was this, what was it from? erma sounds so like mama ree back in the day. well, they are sisters, but OMG! PRICELESS.
That is the late great Rev. Charles Nicks of the original St. James Baptist church. Located on the corner of Pulford St. and Mt. Elliot in Detroit. I was a member there years ago..thank you for posting this video and thank you for the memories
Wasn't they somthin? Wasn't they!! With the tears rolling outta my eyes and i never even met them! Them folks really was somethin. Retha, Erma Carolyn, Rev Cecil, Rev C.L, Cousin Brenda, all of em could tear a place up. Could you imagine what it must have been like back in DERtroit in them days???
AMEN and god keep you and bless you all the way. Thank ya.
I'm getting spoiled off of all these new aretha videos coming up lol. Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm such an addict of Aretha's voice, it makes my day so much better when I wake up and get to hear a new performance from her I've never seen. Thanks so sharing!
