I just found this sample about 2 years ago myself. Never really cared for the movie so I spent years searching for this break!! Marley used this track a LOT! Besides the Biz joint, you got LL and I believe he used it again on the 2nd In Control album as well for an R&B track. he also flipped the Funky Drummer several times for LL and others. He knew how to recycle.. LOL
But more than likely, the movie went to VHS very quickly (the film was a box office flop) in 1986 or early 87, and Biz's album came out in 1988 - more than enough time. You can't listen to this clip and say Marley didn't sample it. It's plain as day.
This IS exactly where Marley sampled the drums for "Something for the Radio." And why would it have been "almost impossible" to sample? If you're suggesting that the VHS wasn't available before the Biz record was recorded, then Marley must've seen the movie and gotten a personal copy from Warner Bros. Remember, both Cold Chillin' and this movie were through Warner Bros, so the connections were there.
@strillystrill I agree 100%, also like Prince anyone signed to the record company were a slave to Warner Bros, losing all rights to there music and to never be uploaded to youtube! The ones that do, you never see ads on there videos. Which means at anytime they can come down or you can lose your account. I know I've lost one account because of the same thing.~Phurdrick
Nope this is not where Marley sampled Biz's track, that came from B-Side and Fab Five Freddy, this album was recorded in 87 the Movie was release seven months earlier, remember that this was the 80s and although sampling was rampant, the ability to sample a small part of a movie clearly would have been almost impossible in those days...
This was the one video I got from the 1-800-New-Funk outfit, and it was waiting for me when I got back from my first trip to San Francisco. I didn't care that I was tired, I put it in IMMEDIATELY, and watched it twice. The first 25 or so times I watched this movie, I just found everything about it to be so fresh, especially this scene - this is such a simple drum beat, but it blew my mind big time.
Do you know how long I've been searching for this sample. Wow....talk about right under your nose..And hear I'm thinking Marley Marl programmed those hand claps in the background..lol. Marley Marl is a beast!
tedsmooth's hello good morning remix used this sample too

@exactdigital - This film came out in 1986, which means that this likely was recorded in 1984 or 85...if not sooner.
And you can easily go "Line Out" from a VCR to a tape deck (or a sampler). I used to do it all the time back then.

This scene was a subliminal salute (shout-out) to Sheila E. that Prince added to "Under the Cherry Moon".

Isn't this also the drum track used for LL's "Jinglin' Baby"?
chj2 3 years ago
Yup, LL used it on Jingling, layering overtop of it the bass and drum sample from The Grassroots 'You And Love Are The Same'.
