A true the story, the CHIEFROCKERS through george lamond (before he made it big) went to meet some people at a manhattan studio for a possible show connection and on the way there while the whole NYC CHIEF ROCKERS CREW got of the 4 train, the NYC BREAKERS along with lil alex was gettin on the train (this happen after this show) both crews noticed each other but were a few trains away from each other as one got off and the other got on for anything ever to transpire
Also from the NYC CHIEF ROCKERS - there was lil GREG who lil Alex was cool with and had praticed with him and the crew at the ECHO PLACE BASEMENT in the BRONX a place where breakers from all over would go and practice- there was mentioned beef about how lil alex took lil gregs helicopter headspins but nothing ever came out of it as a battle was concern
To Gproducshizz- but at the same time this show aired there was kid already from the bronx know as FLAREMASTER who was down with the NEW YORK CITY CHIEF ROCKERS and he was already doing like 15 FLARES straight. every one knew about him
the black guy with the footwork is excellent. he had some clean footwork in beatstreet also. but for me i think u will be very hard pressed to find a better all round breaker than lil alex at this time although kuriyaki and powerful pexter would have run him close or maybe tied with him. but he was phenomenal - he is a one man crew himself. check out the old school battle in the links from 1984 - he takes on the whole crew himself and there is nothing he cant do. flares/windmills headspins etc
Incredible Bongo Band - 'Apache' is the artist and title of the song. You can find this one and plenty of other old school samples at this link to the Street Beat Records "Ultimate Breaks & Beats" collection. I have a few of this vinyl somewhere with my tech 1200's.
Go to undergroundhiphop and search street beat records for "Ultimate Breaks & Beats" Youtube wont let me post the link so you'll have to do it this way.
Or just google street beat records and click the link at undergroundhiphop and scroll down the page until you see "Ultimate Breaks & Beats". It's the 19th track on this collection of 174 /198 tracks. Listen to some of the songs on this collection and it'll bring back memories of the 80's. You had to be a DJ to know of this company in the 80's and 90's.
thanx funkman, i got the LD from Pex too, kid was mad fresh, theres that battle on here too with lil Alex versus Alien ness if ya didn't kno(i'm sure you do tho) thanx all the same..
@Gproducshizz Before break dancing, there was capoeira some of break dancing roots come from this martial arts. Which was a fighting form that was hidden as a dance.
Everytime i watch this it just takes me back to a time where Hip Hop was still crawling for mainstream exceptance...My have we grown still then huh? Dont stop wont stop
i remember watching this when i was younger, first time i saw them dancing in spandex! i was like, what? and who was that new short dude at the end? i don't remember him in beat street! lol
they need to do this for Obama's anauagaration. maybe reunite the original memebers of the NYC or the new rock steady crew...bring that shit back to the ol' school, the positive aspects of hip hop.
OMG...this is iconic. This reminds of what just happen with Obama. I was fucking in awe when i saw these doods...I'm not Puerto Rican but i gotta give it up to them....
For anyone who was alive during this time,This performance was what people in the South Bronx and every other urban wasteland of the United States wanted to take place. This wasn't to "dance for massa", it was to show the "elite" that despite the fact that these young ghetto youths were left for dead in the late 60s ,1970s and the 1980s, they were still standing. They arose from burned out buildings and federal budget cuts that lead to school programs ending. They had prevailed regardless.
Jive Spencer thank u so much for posting this. I remember watching this with my mother and sister. This video is just proof that Black people and Latino people in New York City knew this culture was the future of the world

This was what bboying was all about. There are bboys who still can't rock it like that. By the way does any1 know the name of the bboy at 3:06 in the blue doo-rag? I know all the others but I can't remember him. He did future floors, flares and a nice little headspin. That kind of shit was top class back then. Peace!
I cant remember his name but he was the latest edition to the crew right before they splitted up according to an interview he used to trained with them all the time since he was a little kid.
His name was lil Alex not much info about him but his style was evidence that bboyin hadnt even peaked yet even tho it was dying in the eyes of the mainstream...always wondered what happen to this cat
You can sort of see the bridge from the second generation to the third generation in this kid. That flare into the windmill (continuous back-spin to be b-boy correct) was way advanced for that time.
Respect bro, thanx 4 giving me the name of that cat, 'lil Alex' good to see someone who knows about the old skool, when bboying was bboying. Peace! from the UK
i thought i left a post with a link but i dont see it?? anyway search "NYC rare old battle 1984" and you'll see lil Alex in a rare Battle with other known bboys Pretty good battle amonest the youth and up and comming
First i want to say thanks for putting this on youtube because we lost the old betamax tape we had and second he's my younger brother and last he's not active ! Again thanks alot for the props and for putting this up and the other ones you have
i remember this back in the day when we was breakin, this shit was inspiring and pushed breaking even further down here in new zealand the streets of south auckland
That was the biggest moment in B-boying that decade !! I was 14 years old then. Did you hear those Stiff acting Rich Devils have to start coming out of their arrogance and applaud in the middle of the routine ?? The Reagan's Loved it. Look at their smiles ! The Zulu Nation's Popularity went through the roof worldwide !!! I miss the NYC Breakers. I loved dynamic, and rock steady also. But....NYC was more polished with the routines. Never sloppy on National TV , on the streets, or in movies.
I was 12 years of age and living in Germany during the cold war. This very moment was such an inspiration for the lower creatures like me living in Germany. Thank you musicians, artists back in those days.
just remember one thing.. we started before TODAYs standard become or where ever in the sack of there father and egg of there mother..just be reall we started 1st.. HYPO Queens New Yorks... 1980 my friend.... not attacking just making it clear... there buck-4 crazy leg Boogie down Bronx ... Airborn , Tiny, Flip from Queens the 1st just be aware..and yes my name is HYPO..
Actually, all of the toprock steps you see today, were around since the 70's and 80's, it's just that NYC breakers never really used those steps ever.
The outlaw spins, indian steps, salsa fronts, salsa steps, salsa spins, switches, and toprock shuffles, were all around way back in the day, but were barely ever televised seeing as television only cared about showing the dynamic power moves, with very little toprock and footwork.
Guys remember todays breakers like Cico and KYS know what they know cause of guys NYCB and RSC back then there were no YOUTube or videos to bite moves, everything was learned from scratch and with own imagination.
lol, and you're the same guy who dissed Ken Swift and Lil Lep, for still using the same moves nowadays, that they used in the 80's. Be consistent with what you say, you're the one who stated in the Ken Swift vs. Kmel video, that Kmel had a machine gun, and Ken Swift and Lil Lep, brought small handguns, that really bugs me, your disrespect for someone so vital.
Iam being consistent! Nycb are always going to be my favorite crew and i give them all the credit for what bboying is now.but its true 20 yrs later little lep goes to battle and all he does is his swipes with a headspin that was a hell of a move in a 85 but not today so the samething goes for swift.I can understand if you're doing it for fun but if ur in a battle bring better stuff.
but thats my point If they're in the 40's then they should stay home or battle other over the hill bboys if they are not going to bring competive moves.Let me remind you again,Picture USA military going to Irag with the same planes they used in world war 1,come dude i know you love Swift but u cant having to fight a 20 yr old.
Wrong analogy. It's more like, Swift is America, and who since World War 1, has built up his arsenal more effectively, and is even strong now than he was in World War 1. The only difference is, is you think blowups are the main "war" weaponry in bboying, when you're wrong, foundation,
flavor, character, style, are the main things FIRST, and you put blowups on top of that. So while a guy may have bigger blowups than Kenny, he has the main things that are considered more important in bboying down better than anyone else.
Blowups and tricks are the ammunition/bullets in bboying. But style,
flavor, foundation, finesse, those are the actual weaponry. So a guy with a sloppy, faulty gun system with horrible accuracy, being too heavy to move efficiently. Yes you may have better bullets, but your weapon can't even aim properly to hit the target clean and on the mark.
bullets/ammunition, but his weaponry has perfect accuracy to actually hit its target where it matters, more control, reloads faster, etc, so it takes out the others before those others can actually even hit the mark perfectly in the first place.
To the average spectator, they might think, "wow that gun shoots with a bigger
bang sound and looks cooler!" But the expert in the field knows the less flashy weapon with seemingly softer explosions, is the weapon that can take out the targets efficiently, and are more effective in a battle environment.
You're the spectator, you're the one thinking the "boom" is what matters first.
than the entire world of bboys today, they don't need to do all the moves that are around now, it's unnecessary for guys like them, because they can kill without those.
You're a breakdancer, not a bboy, you never were a bboy, still aren't.
By the way, NYCB had better athleticism, and moves, than RSC did back in the day, but guess which crew is remembered more from the 80's? That's right, it's Rocksteady crew, because they had more style and flavor, and more complex footwork, which is exactly why,
Ask anyone who Ken Swift or Crazy Legs is, most likely they will know. Ask someone who Lil Lep, or Chino is, no doubt those two are legends, but more people majority wise will know the names of swift and legs, that's not my opinion, that's a fact.
they may not have gotten as much "wow's", but in the long run, they are imprinted more in the minds of those who saw them.
I'm in no way saying NYCB didn't have style, they had MAD style along with their flavor, I'm just saying that it's not the athleticism that will make a deep artistic imprint that will last, it's one's artistic style.
Yo that was an incredible set from beginning to end. Can somebody tell me where I can find the set they performed on SoulTrain (84 or 85)to "Renegades of Funk"?
not one of the best nyc performances...a lot of the moves were fucked up and not smooth...still way ahead of their time though along with rsc. if u check out rsc they never put a foot wrong in their live performances and are the ultimate professionals. nyc are often wack in comparison.
RSC as a group doing moves together were good, Idivudually they didn't have much, buck 4 had the baddest turtle but couldn't do anything else, ken and Devious had only footwork the only complete breaker was teriekki and Crazy legs had a little bit of variation but no power moves.
isnt teriyaki a japanese dish...i think u mean kuriyaki..... anyway if you look at some of their videos u will see they had much more than what you mention: windmills, footwork, headspins, etc...but i agree KURIYAKI was the best. he was my favourite (RIP)
What windmills?? the only one that could do windmills without hands was Kuriyaki your favorite japanese dish, crazy legs headspin was 1/2 shorter than little lep!
you need to get out of those japanese restaurants and do more research guy. check out some of the rsc videos on this site and u will see ken swift, buck 4 and crazy legs all have windmills - none as good as kuitiyaki though. there is more to rsc than beatstreet...try the sashimi - i hear its good for the brain.
fucking dope

Nycb are always going to be my favorite crew and i give them all the credit for what bboying is now.but its true 20 yrs later little lep goes to battle and all he does is his swipes with a headspin that was a hell of a move in a 85 but not today so the samething goes for swift.I can understand if you're doing it for fun but if ur in a battle bring better stuff.
nikitobu 3 years ago
....Dude, they're already in their 40's, what do you expect them to do, drink fountain of youth serums to have teenage bodies again?
And again, there you go, thinking it's about the moves, bboying has moves second, but movement first. They're movement is better
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
but thats my point If they're in the 40's then they should stay home or battle other over the hill bboys if they are not going to bring competive moves.Let me remind you again,Picture USA military going to Irag with the same planes they used in world war 1,come dude i know you love Swift but u cant having to fight a 20 yr old.
nikitobu 3 years ago
Wrong analogy. It's more like, Swift is America, and who since World War 1, has built up his arsenal more effectively, and is even strong now than he was in World War 1. The only difference is, is you think blowups are the main "war" weaponry in bboying, when you're wrong, foundation,
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
flavor, character, style, are the main things FIRST, and you put blowups on top of that. So while a guy may have bigger blowups than Kenny, he has the main things that are considered more important in bboying down better than anyone else.
Blowups and tricks are the ammunition/bullets in bboying. But style,
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
flavor, foundation, finesse, those are the actual weaponry. So a guy with a sloppy, faulty gun system with horrible accuracy, being too heavy to move efficiently. Yes you may have better bullets, but your weapon can't even aim properly to hit the target clean and on the mark.
While Kenny may have what seems like weaker
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
bullets/ammunition, but his weaponry has perfect accuracy to actually hit its target where it matters, more control, reloads faster, etc, so it takes out the others before those others can actually even hit the mark perfectly in the first place.
To the average spectator, they might think, "wow that gun shoots with a bigger
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
bang sound and looks cooler!" But the expert in the field knows the less flashy weapon with seemingly softer explosions, is the weapon that can take out the targets efficiently, and are more effective in a battle environment.
You're the spectator, you're the one thinking the "boom" is what matters first.
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
than the entire world of bboys today, they don't need to do all the moves that are around now, it's unnecessary for guys like them, because they can kill without those.
You're a breakdancer, not a bboy, you never were a bboy, still aren't.
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
By the way, NYCB had better athleticism, and moves, than RSC did back in the day, but guess which crew is remembered more from the 80's? That's right, it's Rocksteady crew, because they had more style and flavor, and more complex footwork, which is exactly why,
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
Thats your personal opinion that Rsc will be remembered more than NYCB, them two were the top notch crews in the 80's.
nikitobu 3 years ago
Ask anyone who Ken Swift or Crazy Legs is, most likely they will know. Ask someone who Lil Lep, or Chino is, no doubt those two are legends, but more people majority wise will know the names of swift and legs, that's not my opinion, that's a fact.
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
its Fact...not many today know Mmr. Wave but definetly heard of "Master" Wiggles.
DanielKeithMorrison 3 years ago
they may not have gotten as much "wow's", but in the long run, they are imprinted more in the minds of those who saw them.
I'm in no way saying NYCB didn't have style, they had MAD style along with their flavor, I'm just saying that it's not the athleticism that will make a deep artistic imprint that will last, it's one's artistic style.

'Apachie' by 'the incredable bongo band'!!!!
this was not 'the presidential event eighter' it was the 1985 Gala performance and yes Ronald the 'RAY-GUN' was there.
actaually he made a point of having the New york city breakers at alot of 'events' he attended. Reagan loved them (how fuckin' ironic)

not one of the best nyc performances...a lot of the moves were fucked up and not smooth...still way ahead of their time though along with rsc. if u check out rsc they never put a foot wrong in their live performances and are the ultimate professionals. nyc are often wack in comparison.
Jay1898 4 years ago
Totally disagree with you the only one who looked kind of sloopy was kid nice, RSC didn't have half of the moves that NYCB had.
nikitobu 4 years ago
RSC as a group doing moves together were good, Idivudually they didn't have much, buck 4 had the baddest turtle but couldn't do anything else, ken and Devious had only footwork the only complete breaker was teriekki and Crazy legs had a little bit of variation but no power moves.
nikitobu 4 years ago
isnt teriyaki a japanese dish...i think u mean kuriyaki..... anyway if you look at some of their videos u will see they had much more than what you mention: windmills, footwork, headspins, etc...but i agree KURIYAKI was the best. he was my favourite (RIP)
Jay1898 4 years ago
What windmills?? the only one that could do windmills without hands was Kuriyaki your favorite japanese dish, crazy legs headspin was 1/2 shorter than little lep!
nikitobu 4 years ago
you need to get out of those japanese restaurants and do more research guy. check out some of the rsc videos on this site and u will see ken swift, buck 4 and crazy legs all have windmills - none as good as kuitiyaki though. there is more to rsc than beatstreet...try the sashimi - i hear its good for the brain.
Jay1898 4 years ago
LIke i said windmills with hands even you can do them with hands!
nikitobu 4 years ago
ha ha...true enough. i only saw kuriyaki with no hands. he had a phenomenal windmill - the best!.
