I can see how weed would cause problems, but the same is true of caffiene, alcohol, nicotiene and many perscription drugs. Weed is only a gateway drug when it is supplied by dealers pushing harder substances and has many beneficial and relaxant effects when used in moderation. Put simply, you take away the black markets main source (drugs), legalise them, make them safer to consume and tax it to generate revenue of which would go back into society to fund the health system.

I also said that they legalize drugs that are deadly and give you dangerous side effects (like suicide, liver failure, heart attacks), but keep marijuana severely illegal, which has no adverse side effects that have been proven. Look it up. I also said the country could MAKE money by using it as a cash crop, and eventually will. Prop 19 got downvoted by only a little over half.

I'm OK with the decriminalization of pot. You want to get high, go ahead. What I don't appreciate is his not mentioning that maybe its better if our kids don't smoke dope. Maybe he forgot to get to the "cons" of smoking pot in his eagerness to criticise a Republican, Rush Limbaugh in this case.
Also, while his comments about dead kids were a joke, they were in bad taste. He has no genius.

Ask any teen what drug is easier to get, alcohol or weed, and they will all say weed is 10 times easier to get, you know why? Because drug dealers dont ask for ID.
A liquor store would almost never sell alcohol to minors, because the fine would be HUGE if they got caught, and they already have a HUGE demand for alcohol from adults, the same thing would happen with cannabis if it was legal.

That goes out of stock. Alcohol doesnt. Plus, alcohol kills people, whether from binge drinking, cirrhosis of the liver, or drunk driving. Weed doesnt do that. Never has. Its all natural, unharmful, and you can still function while youre on it, unlike alcohol.

I dont know where you live, but almost everyone will tell kids to fuck off (most wont be that rude) if they ask them to buy alcohol for them.
Literally, if the judge is having a really bad day, you can get up to a $4000 fine for supplying alcohol to minors or up to a year in prison.
No one gives a shit about the $10 fee you give them to buy alcohol for you.

The far right Christian right does not think that marijuana is the 'demon seed' or even the worst drug.
Having said that it certainly has been true that many people first start getting high on marijuana because it is touted as very safe and harmless.
Later you can find something a lot more mind-numbing or tailored for you but at least you started slow.

I also want to add that drugs in the western world and the way drugs are percieved are a matter of, well, exactly that - PERCEPTION.
In some non-western countries (I can't remember which ones) you have grandma and grandpa smoking opium and the kids don't touch it because it is considered not cool and only for old people.

The 'war on drugs' is baseless and fear-mongering at its very best.
Put simply, you take away the black markets main source (drugs), legalise them, make them safer to consume and tax it to generate revenue of which would go back into society to fund the health system.
Of course it is predictable a percentage will become addicts but atleast they won't be committing crimes to score for their next hit and the tax can be used for rehabilitation.
