1. Run

2.Swing

3.hope you get a hit

maybe the odd parry if your lucky

A bit more strategy than that. To be any good you have to think as fast as the sword, think of it as a very fast chess match.

actually sabre is the easiest. In some contexts, foil is the hardest coz of the small target area, complex rules, and complicated blade work

everyone who fences can do foil, it is the most basic weapon which is why you get taught it first. and "complex rules" lol not they are the easiest bouts to ref. they do have hard blade work but the small target makes it easier not harder to defend. in sabre and epee flicking it the best weapon and it's very hard to prevent.

Where are you from and what competition is this? Where i fence, i could get a black card for wearing cool socks. I WANT TO WEAR COOL SOCKS! but all the "posh" fencers think its "distracting"

I suppose, it's extremely annoying when you're hit in epee and you know that your opponent only got it through luck, but I think that it provides more of a challenge, 'cos you have to deal with both the skill of decent fencers and the unpredictibility of newbies
