The fact that the backcover states that the game supports 1080p, doesn't mean that the game itself has a native resolution of 1080p. That answers your question.
I think it's better to let the hdtv handle the upcaling instead of forcing the playstation into 1080p. I tried that once with Uncharted 2 on my full hd panasonic plasma. The game actually looked worse (more jaggy, etc.). When I let the tv do the upscaling (all of the resolution options in the ps3 are on), the game looked fantastic. The tv says indeed that the resolution is 720p, but that is because the resolution of the game is only 720p, not 1080p.

@LuisMatheus4 It's not like you HAVE to run everything at max or HAVE to have the best tech. PC will easily outdo a console in almost every category. It's also fairly cheap to build a PC if you know what you're doing (or someone can do it for you for minimal fees).
Consoles biggest advantage, is that they are a solid base for developers to work on. They only have to focus on one hardware configuration, so more time is spent on content. (Well, not in all cases...)

God of war 3 is in 720p. final fantasy is in 720p. gta 4 is in 720p. It's a fact face it.

@deadfresh10 You can't change it to 1080p if you don't have HDMI, HDMI is used to view thing that support 1080p meaning HD content only if the system supports it. If you have the original cable from ps3 it is not going to work that only shows in standard definition. But try what this guy tried instead of clicking on HDMI select your video output and uncheck all except 1080p if it doesn't work than buy a HDMI cable, I would only recommend that if you have a HD LCD TV, you can get it for $12 or $5

A person here has already said it.. GTA4 does NOT render at full hd (1080p which is really 1920x1080), It renders at 720p (1280x720) Infact the VAST majority of PS3 and 360 games do not render at native 1080p settings. The hardware to render at that kind of res is only available on the PC platform since GPUs and processors constantly evolve every 6 months to a year. Infact, PCs can render games much higher then 1920x1080 (also called 1080p) like 2560x1600 which is even higher then FULL HD.

Yeah, the smaller the TV/Monitor the bigger the difference, I know because I play my PS3 on a 24'' 1080p monitor and I have played it on an HDTV before and the difference between 720p and 1080p is much more noticeable on my monitor than it is on a bigger TV due to higher pixel pitch.

Hi, (my fucking english is fucking bad too :-P), what happens in your case is that your TV LCD is not "Full HD" probably it's "HD Ready", that means that your TV just suport a maximun resolution of 720p (no matter if it's a tv with 20, 30 or 40 inches), but, if you have a TV "Full HD" it will support 1080p. Got it? si o no?

not true. a 1080p screen (lcd, plasma and OLED) has fixed pixels, so it has to scale. since you cant get half pixels, 720p, however it is scaled will look better on a 720p screen due to it being the native resolution of the screen. with 720p on a 1080p screen, you will end up with some form of pixel doubling.

the problem with this is that given the way the ps3 is constructed (this applies to the 360 as well) the hardware will run the game at a lower resolution (640p on the ps3, 720p on the 360) and upscale the image so that the tv receives a 1080p stream, allowing the tv to avoid using its built in scaling chip, which is usually inferior to that in the source equipment.
1080i and 1080p are almost identical, except 1080i sends half of the info each frame (more specifically odd lines then even), but 1080p sends the whole frame at once.
actually, 1080i runs with a 1920x1080 resolution, the same as 1080p. the difference is that i is interlaced, meaning that half of the rows are sent each frame (odds then even, alternating between frames) whereas p is progressive, meaning that every row is sent in every frame. it requires half the bandwidth to use i, so that is the adopted standard for sdtv. only in motion will the difference between them become noticed, regardless of screen size.
I can only run it in 1080i. Doesn't matter if I choose 1080p, the screens just turns black and I cannot use it. However, my TV supports 1080p and my HDMI cabel aswell.

RAGE. Better graphics on ps3 than xbox 360 (As ID software said) because the dvd-dl discs are too small compared to blu ray and cant really handle true current gen gaming and its innovations.
The difference between blue-ray and dvd is only the amount of data it can hold... It has no affect of graphics... and the fact of the matter is 360 and PS3 are almost exactly the same in that department.... if i were Sony i'd be saying " look we have an rpg the size of nothing the world has seen before" because size is the only department Sony can actually beat Microsoft in!
Disc size is only part of that. yes the blue-ray holds more, but the PS3 texture compression formats are not as efficient and there's less memory. If you can fit all your level textures into VRAM then great, If you can't then it's down to the efficiency of your streaming code.
The bottom line is that both platforms are actually pretty similar. I develop for both so I know whereof I speak.
If this was true hd, you would get about 10fps. That's why they set it to 620. The ps3 only has a geforce 7800, after all. The GPU isn't very powerful really
Are you sure this is resulting better picture? Because I tried this setting for Resistance 2 (which is 720p by default), and the picture looked a bit uglier in 1080p. I don't have GTA IV yet.

GTA4 does not run in 1080P. Your PS3 might be displaying at 1080P but the game itself is still rendering in 720P.
It's the same with Midnight club LA. Your TV might tell you it's running in 1080P, but the game is still rendering 1280x720 pixels, just displaying them in a 1920x1080 mode.
If you think I'm full of it, and I'm sure some/most of you do, then load up MGS4 or GT5 and play them in 1080P.

can someone help me? i have an HDMI cable hooked up to my ps3 and my Philips 42 inch LCD TV and the problem is that when i do the process in the video it says "format not supported" however i van use 1080i only but the thing that confuses me is that when i go to the automatic it says the most it can support is 1080p and the problem is that if i use the automatic process i will not be able to play my games at 1080p only 720p please someone help me with this problem

@deadfresh10 You can't change it to 1080p if you don't have HDMI, HDMI is used to view thing that support 1080p meaning HD content only if the system supports it. If you have the original cable from ps3 it is not going to work that only shows in standard definition. But try what this guy tried instead of clicking on HDMI select your video output and uncheck all except 1080p if it doesn't work than buy a HDMI cable, I would only recommend that if you have a HD LCD TV, you can get it for $12 or $5

A person here has already said it.. GTA4 does NOT render at full hd (1080p which is really 1920x1080), It renders at 720p (1280x720) Infact the VAST majority of PS3 and 360 games do not render at native 1080p settings. The hardware to render at that kind of res is only available on the PC platform since GPUs and processors constantly evolve every 6 months to a year. Infact, PCs can render games much higher then 1920x1080 (also called 1080p) like 2560x1600 which is even higher then FULL HD.

I found out that for some odd reason GTA 4 automatically goes to 720p...you have to disable 720p and 1080i , for it to play 1080p , I only found this out lol like 2 months ago and ever since the graphics are sexy blu ray style

Yeah, the smaller the TV/Monitor the bigger the difference, I know because I play my PS3 on a 24'' 1080p monitor and I have played it on an HDTV before and the difference between 720p and 1080p is much more noticeable on my monitor than it is on a bigger TV due to higher pixel pitch.

for xbox360 on 1080p looks awful but not that awful lol but on a ps3 looks way much better but is not 1080p native resolution but still looks good.even if you have a 32inch it looks off the hook don't let people fool you, i think they say that because they have a xbox360 on 1080p and they don't see a diff, xbox360 don't do true 1080p at all, i got fact if you want to see ti let me know i saw it to ya

Hi, (my fucking english is fucking bad too :-P), what happens in your case is that your TV LCD is not "Full HD" probably it's "HD Ready", that means that your TV just suport a maximun resolution of 720p (no matter if it's a tv with 20, 30 or 40 inches), but, if you have a TV "Full HD" it will support 1080p. Got it? si o no?

not true. a 1080p screen (lcd, plasma and OLED) has fixed pixels, so it has to scale. since you cant get half pixels, 720p, however it is scaled will look better on a 720p screen due to it being the native resolution of the screen. with 720p on a 1080p screen, you will end up with some form of pixel doubling.

the problem with this is that given the way the ps3 is constructed (this applies to the 360 as well) the hardware will run the game at a lower resolution (640p on the ps3, 720p on the 360) and upscale the image so that the tv receives a 1080p stream, allowing the tv to avoid using its built in scaling chip, which is usually inferior to that in the source equipment.

1080i and 1080p are almost identical, except 1080i sends half of the info each frame (more specifically odd lines then even), but 1080p sends the whole frame at once.
given a good tv, they will look almost identical.

actually, 1080i runs with a 1920x1080 resolution, the same as 1080p. the difference is that i is interlaced, meaning that half of the rows are sent each frame (odds then even, alternating between frames) whereas p is progressive, meaning that every row is sent in every frame. it requires half the bandwidth to use i, so that is the adopted standard for sdtv. only in motion will the difference between them become noticed, regardless of screen size.

Not Native 1080p
I believe this is were most people get confused, so it IS running in 1080p, just not native.

I can only run it in 1080i. Doesn't matter if I choose 1080p, the screens just turns black and I cannot use it. However, my TV supports 1080p and my HDMI cabel aswell.
This video is pretty obvious. Screens settings was the first thing I checked when I got my PS3.

The difference between blue-ray and dvd is only the amount of data it can hold... It has no affect of graphics... and the fact of the matter is 360 and PS3 are almost exactly the same in that department.... if i were Sony i'd be saying " look we have an rpg the size of nothing the world has seen before" because size is the only department Sony can actually beat Microsoft in!

Disc size is only part of that. yes the blue-ray holds more, but the PS3 texture compression formats are not as efficient and there's less memory. If you can fit all your level textures into VRAM then great, If you can't then it's down to the efficiency of your streaming code.
The bottom line is that both platforms are actually pretty similar. I develop for both so I know whereof I speak.

If this was true hd, you would get about 10fps. That's why they set it to 620. The ps3 only has a geforce 7800, after all. The GPU isn't very powerful really

Are you sure this is resulting better picture? Because I tried this setting for Resistance 2 (which is 720p by default), and the picture looked a bit uglier in 1080p. I don't have GTA IV yet.

GTA4 does not run in 1080P. Your PS3 might be displaying at 1080P but the game itself is still rendering in 720P.
It's the same with Midnight club LA. Your TV might tell you it's running in 1080P, but the game is still rendering 1280x720 pixels, just displaying them in a 1920x1080 mode.
If you think I'm full of it, and I'm sure some/most of you do, then load up MGS4 or GT5 and play them in 1080P.
Youtube is the worst place to find tips, people believe anything.
