My biggest problem with the death penalty is the list... the LONG list - of people who's convictions have been quoshed, especially after the introduction of DNA profiling techniques. This includes a lot of unsafe convictions, where guilt can no longer be proven , which is bad enough - but also very many cases where people who have been in jail for decades have been proven to be completely innocent. There are also many cases of postumous pardons, too...

The death sentance should be used in EXTREMELY serious cases such as mass murder, and only if the evidence is undismissable. If the death penalty is used, there should be a gap of 10 years where the defendant has the time to appeal the sentance.

Messing around with pre-pubescant children is disgusting even in the eyes of hardened criminals, so he will suffer like hell in prison, he will be hated for the rest of his life for what he did and will have no friends.
He is out of prison, I guess he did less than three years. I havent kept a track on him but I think he got off lightly for his crime. OK he will be reviled, but by his appearance he seems unmoved by it.

Therapy can help the kids. Death penalty = murder. Murder is worse than abuse, therapy can help victims of abuse but it can't bring a dead person back to life.

Problem is unless the evidence is irrefutable you can't have the death penalty, the legal system in Britain is so bent that there would be innocent people getting executed al the time. If there is 100 irrefutable proof then yes, a life in a British prison is like a life in a two star hotel, so by all means, for pre-meditated murder, off the bastards, it's what they deserve.

The problem with the death penalty is that sometimes. Well put it this way;
I read the paper the other day about a guy who was rejected at work, then took an axe, tore down the woman's door and brutally murdered her in front of her children.
It's that sort of situation that I personally think the death penalty is the solution to, as the result is not murder, but justice.
But then there are cases in which evidence is un-reliable and sketchy and then a person is wrongly convicted.
The Death penalty isn't the right thing to solve these situations. I'm pretty sure most in the prison system would rather face death than spend their entire life in prison. I know I would. By bringing back the death penalty, you ultimately allow criminals to win. Life sentences should mean life, untill death. Take away their priviledges. TV, radio, games consoles etc. That'll send them over the edge.

@jamez00 It says on the 4oD page for this programme that Glitter was chosen over a fictional character in order to give the film an element of realism and to accuratly depict the level of conflicting emotion generated by both the pro and anti death penalty lobby.
Ian Brady, whilst still a much hated and reviled figure, is much less current to a greater percentage of the public and the effect would've not been the same.

My biggest problem with the death penalty is the list... the LONG list - of people who's convictions have been quoshed, especially after the introduction of DNA profiling techniques. This includes a lot of unsafe convictions, where guilt can no longer be proven , which is bad enough - but also very many cases where people who have been in jail for decades have been proven to be completely innocent. There are also many cases of postumous pardons, too...

He is out of prison, I guess he did less than three years. I havent kept a track on him but I think he got off lightly for his crime. OK he will be reviled, but by his appearance he seems unmoved by it.

Problem is unless the evidence is irrefutable you can't have the death penalty, the legal system in Britain is so bent that there would be innocent people getting executed al the time. The problem with the death penalty is that sometimes. Well put it this way;
I read the paper the other day about a guy who was rejected at work, then took an axe, tore down the woman's door and brutally murdered her in front of her children.
It's that sort of situation that I personally think the death penalty is the solution to, as the result is not murder, but justice.
But then there are cases in which evidence is un-reliable and sketchy and then a person is wrongly convicted.

The Death penalty isn't the right thing to solve these situations. I'm pretty sure most in the prison system would rather face death than spend their entire life in prison. I know I would. By bringing back the death penalty, you ultimately allow criminals to win. Life sentences should mean life, untill death. Take away their priviledges. TV, radio, games consoles etc. That'll send them over the edge.

It is cheaper to the taxpayer to hang people rather than imprison them but that is a poor argument because it costs more to rehabilitate people than just lock them up and forget about them and surely in cases where people can be rehabilitated that is preferable?

I dont agree with life-sentences, if the idea is to "make the problem go away" permanantly, wouldn't it be more cruel to make them live out what may be a long life 'at the cost of the tax payer' when nitrogen-gas is a painless humane way to end a life not fit for the world at large.
Also executions should only be performed on an admission of guilt, the first couple years behind bars of a life-long sentence may just have you asking to be euthanised, which is lets be honest ...cost effective.

I disagree with your views however, but hell if we all thought the same we'd all end up with no deep discussions or thoughts and then we'd end up vegetated and lacking stimulation.

What is this?
I thought the problem with capital punishment was how it gets out of hand and innocent people end up being executed because the death penalty is given too easily when there isn't solid enough evidence.
