Display knife only. Do not buy this knife if you plan on actually using it. A much better knife for practical use is the cold steel natchez, though it costs quite a lot more money.
I have a big knife made by the same company (the knife is named Explorer), but can't find no info about it - no name, no location, nothing. Can someone help me?
@crypter27 We do like Bowies. I got one from my grandfather, it was his brothers. This was the knife he carried with his kit in Africa in WW2. As far as types of knife go I'd have to say Bowie is my favourite. Covers all the bases. Although I don't go much for the size factor, 6 to 7 inches is fine for most tasks.
@Dave54600 I guess the bowie has become popular with more then Americans, even though its an American origional but historicly the dagger is the native cutting tool of your'e people. I mean you don't see to many American's adopting the kris knife or tanto so its kind of bizarre, the desighn must be very appealing to you brits that you would reject your'e native blade.
@crypter27 The Bowie went worldwide I think, there's some good Austrailian blades that are obviously based on the same design. I'm actually Scottish. Historically our main knife is considered to be the Dirk, which is as you say a dagger. I've never actually saw one, think it's worn with the kilt nowadays. I don't know why but I've always associated the word 'dagger' with stabbing someone or something, specifically designed to kill. Bowie knives just seem more versatile, durable too.
@Dave54600 Ah the dirk,a little different then the British dagger a small difference in its desighn compared to the British daggeri, the dirk has a groove down the middle it was wide. About 10 inches long, the dagger as a weapon is desighned for stabbing but it can be used to cut as well depending on the dagger,I think your'e people used the dirk as a multipurpose tool. Very similaur to how the bowie was used in our culture, because the groove was desighned to decrease weight.
@crypter27 The Bowie is the Zippo of the knife world to me. Anytime I've ever seen a Dirk it's always sheathed and attached to someones leg. I've looked at a few online, some of them seem more like short swords, I like them but they appear ornamental in a lot of ways. I think they were mostly used a long long time ago.
@crypter27 Doubtful, I'm interested in knives but I don't collect them, if I did collect then yes but as I'm Scottish I would probably go for the old style first. I'd like to collect them but it's an expensive hobby. My multi tool and Bowie covers all the bases. The knife I want right now is a Ray Mears style knife, not the one he uses but something along similar lines that isn't 300 quid with a 10yr waiting list. You could get a Ferrari quicker than that. How about you, do you collect?
@Dave54600 It sounds like getting a permit for a gun, rather then a knife! I mean in America knives are bought & sold freely,no waiting list if you got the cash you got a knife, yes I collect don't tell me you need a permit to own a knife! In that case I'd move to a country where you can buy a knife freely.
@crypter27 Na, the 10yr thing is because that knife is completely hand made and so in demand. Here you can buy any knife but you can't carry any fixed blade. Only allowed fold backs with a blade length no more than 3.5 inches. A pen knife basically. It's 4 or 5 years in jail if you're caught. It's a disgrace. For instance my multi tool is illegal to carry because it has a locking mechanism (provided for safety), the blade on it is about 2.5 inches. There's a lot of knife crime here.
@Dave54600 We have similaur laws in the American state of Maryland, but laws vary by state in Virginia & Pennsylvania the knife laws are allot less strict & length isn't a problem. My state is more liberal, then I would like it to be even though I have blades of many lengths if I was you I'd look for a place where you can have more freedom & move there. But here I'm trying to get those knife laws repealed!
@Dave54600 I am sorry to hear about your plight. I had heard that the British Government mandated that even kitchenware knives how round blunt tips.. If there is truth to that, That is just people neglecting that individuals are responsible for their actions. I hope you can get somewhere where you can pursue your hobby, or at least get some relief where you live right now.
@TheFoundersWereRight The kitchen knives are fine LOL. Here you can have any knife you want, import it even, but you can't carry it. There's a whole movement trying to ban the sale of hunting knives or anything that could be described as a lethal weapon. Those guys don't seem to realise that you are right, it's the people who are responsible. I mean if push came to shove people would just make their own knives or get the old butcher knife from the kitchen.
@Dave54600 I have a saying. THe most dangerous weapon a human can posess is their mind. There are numerous ways to kill someone with bare hands or feet. A rock, a broken branch, even a pencil or ball point pen can become a lethal weapon if someone knows how they are using it. A self defense technique taught to women here is if they have nothing else, is to use their car keys to stab their attacker's eyes or throat, which if done right can kill the attacker. (Throat wise)
@TheFoundersWereRight It's the kids that are the problem, early to late teens, especially in deprived areas. Throw in some cheap alcohol and drugs, most knife crime here is caused by them. Most are under 18 so not considered entirely responsible for their own actions in the eyes of the law, so the government trys to ban the sale of these knives to stop them getting their hands on it. It makes sense but it doesn't change anything. Except for the guy who uses a knife the way its meant to be.
@Dave54600 As for the under 18.. I have never believed that someone at 17 can be completely stupid one minute, and sudenly upon turning 18 a few seconds later be gifted with the complete knowlege of right and wrong, or control over their own actions as if by magic! That is the problem with the courts in almost every country now day. They look at symptoms as the issue, instead of attacking the illness.
@bigalincanada Their Draconian Weapon laws maybe. lol Australia doesn't like the idea of self defense for its citizens, but I know it is not illegal for knives and swords there. However, if you were to use them to defend yourself, then you might get in trouble.
Large and or expensive knives are pretty much just for display. I learned in Thailand that you carried a 5 to 8 inch common every day variety of knife if you were serious for protection. No markings on knife. then if you had to leave it behind in the event of real world use, you left little to track you down. You advocate using the first aid tin or survival kit on a regular basis so that if you really need it, you are accustomed to it. Some reasoning with a knife.
