I'm not talking talent, but if you do some research into the early days of Alice In Chains and specifically Layne's Glam metal past, he really should have not been throwing stones.
As for talent, I love Layne and he is still one of my favorite vocalists, he didn't write much material. He was just another instrument in Jerry's band.

And AIC have always cited Metallica as an influence on their music.
