Cagney also said - he felt that shrewdness is not a very happy quality - it shows on camera. "Doris is the epitome of guilelessness. An almost naive quality of innocence and trust. As an actress she perfectly illustrates my definition of good acting - just plant yourself, look the other actor in the eye, and tell the truth. Thats what she does all right."
These are Cagney quotes from Doris Day - Her Own Story.
Thank you so much for posting those words from James Cagney. I don't like thinking about all the times Hollywood seems to have dismissed Doris Day's amazing talent, but they most certainly did in the case of her movie Love Me or Leave Me. This movie is a must see. Thank you for watching.
This is a great scene...a great movie. For Doris not to get an Academy Award nomination was a sin of omission on the academy's part. And Cagney had great things to say about Doris - "she has what all the good ones have - the ablility to project the simple, direct statement of a simple direct idea without cluttering it."
He said Doris performing affected him as he had been affected only twice before - by the great Laurette Taylor and Pauline Lord in the play Anna Christie. High praise !
Cagney was an enigma- a very intelligent actor who was willing to be loathed in early roles in the 1930's and gangsters, much later in White Heat, here in the 50's in the Ruth Ettinger story, as well as in Mr. Roberts, but also play endearing parts as George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy, Puck (I think) in MidSummer Night's Dream. Never cheated an audience in his effort.
He was terrific in this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed him acting with Doris Day. I also watched him in "The West Point Story". He has some great one-liners! Thank you for watching.
