This was the series that finally galvanized the role players on the Bulls into a force strong enough to withstand the storm when great teams would beat up on them. After this series, they gained so much confidence and Jordan's play was at such an alltime level (and rising), that I KNEW MJ was on the verge of creating a BULLS DYNASTY by sheer force of will...
the league lowered the bar so more players can put up jordan like numbers and have the dominance that jordan had on the game for marketing value. The league wanted to create more jordans after the lockout to sell its sport. No way could players like kobe or wade put up the jordan like numbers they are putting up now without the defensive handicaping. The league wanted more stars and hyped stats for its stars to sell the sport and thats what we got today. The league saw how popular jordan became
and how popular he made the sport so when the sport took a ratings dive after the lockout they needed to create more jordan like players and hype up their star players. In order to do that they had to lower the bar and make it easier for its star players to reach the level of a jordan and put up jordan like numbers. Thats why they handicaped the defenses in order to hype their star players and make them in jordans. This gives these players the same dominace and effect on the game that only
before jordan could reach. Now players are putting up 25+ ppg easily without the skill and athleticism in took before. Kobes is the product of the rule change and the leagues attempt to create jordan type dominate players. Kobe, lebron wade all dont even come close to jordans athleticism and skills yet they are able to put up jordan like numbers due to the defensive handicaping. Their stats lack the substance of jordans stats because jordan accumulated it against tougher resistance
no doubt he has athleticism but in jordans playing day lebron wouldve been average. Hes just magnified from the rules. The rules today emphasizes athleticism over skills. How athletic will lebron seem with defenders being allowed grab, hold and handcheck him, with bigs camped out in the paint. Lebron plays in the no touch era. Lebron wouldnt hold up playing pre 99. Hed be just another avg 20-25 ppg low FG% guy. He doesnt have the skills to counter the physical style of basketball played pre99
how do we know how wade and kobe would've played in the 80s? still probably great. they could've adapted to the more physical play by necessity just like the other players of the 80s did. if you asked many of those players from the 80s if they wanted to play physical if they had a choice a lot of them would likely say no.
@dv122 typical mythmaking. games were unbelievably fast-paced in the late 80's and early 90's. Teams routinely averaged over 110 a game with ease. It was easier to score then.
I agree with you dv122 on everything but the 8 second half court rule. I think that is one rule change that made it more difficult for offenses. I can't imagine how many back court violations there would have been with hand checking and rough play with an 8 second timer. I remember lots of games where there were close calls on it too.
the 8 sec rule was designed to speed the game up and hurry teams into their offensive sets. Its one of the many rule designs to get away from pat riley type philosopy of dont take a shot unless the shot clock is under 9 sec. Alot of coaches from the late 80's to late 90's started adopting variations of chuck daley coaching techniques. The game was slowing down alot and becoming more of a football type slow game. After the shorten lockout year the 8 sec among many other rules where designed to
change the game and make it higher scoring faster pase. It was also designed to get the leagues star players scoring ppg up. It was on the decline since late 80's and since the rules change we have seen record 30ppg from its star players. Its the 8 sec combined with the other rules which make it easier. The shot clock is still 24 sec its just speeds up the team getting into their offensive set. It doesnt hurt the offensive team at all
the leagues attempt was to speed the game up but it hasnt done that. You havent seen higher team ppg. You have seen higher individual ppg but in terms of speeding the game up it hasnt done it. All the rule changes have done was lower the quality of its players and lower the quality of its games. Coaches still have the same mind set and coaching philosophy. The problem didnt lie in the rules it was in the coaching philosophy. Or maybe the leagues stated reason for the rule changes was a lie and
their real reason was to hype its star players stats for marketing. After lockout the league needed star players and stats are always appealing to its viewers. It was an attempt to create more jordan like players to sell their sport. The only difference is that jordan accumulated his numbers under legitimately. The rules today are designed to create jordan players who can influence the game like jordan could. The league saw how successful a jordan type player was and so they lowered the bar
so more players had the ability to reach jordan like statistics. Now its easier for players to get 30 ppg for a season and shoot 50+%. ITs also easier to get 40's, 50's and 60s. The rule changes werent about speeding the game up its was about the league trying to create more jordan like players. They had to lower the bar to do it because the level jordan was at was unreachable. Nobody could attain those type of statistics jordan accumulated under the rules jordan accumulated them under
so the lowered the bar so more ppl could put up jordan like numbers and have jordan like influence on the game. It was all about marketing its star players and creating more jordans. thats what the rule changes where about. All its done though was taint and downgrade what jordan accomplised. It takes less skill and athleticism to reach the 30ppg 50% fg milestone. It takes less to do the things that once before were considered great numbers. Now they are avg numbers that arent a big deal
there is more substance to jordans 30 + ppg 5+ast5+reb and 50% FG than what lebron, wade and kobe do in the current nba and playoffs. Lebrons 30+5+5+ and 50%fg deminish that milestone and deminishes jordans stats and athleticism because its easier to accumulate those type of numbers in the defensive handicaped league of today. Its takes alot less skills and athleticism to get 30ppg,5+ast5+reb and hit 50% from the floor today. You also take less of a pounding physically today, lanes are less
congested, the no charge area, no handcheck, the new interpretations of fouls, the 4 flagrant foul rule, and 6 technical foul rule, the 8sec backcourt, illegal defensive guidelines etc all make it easier to be more offensively productive in todays game. This lowers the quality of the elite players and lowers the quality of playoff teams. Its takes less athleticism and skills to be productive in todays game. Pre99 weeded out all the lesser players and created more
athletic and skilled all around upper echelon players. The quality of the players and playoff teams where higher pre99 because it took more to win and be productive. Just compare the playoff teams and elite players pre99 to the playoff teams of today. George karl may win a championship this year but his team is far from the level of skill and athleticism of his 96 seatle team. just compare the bottom seated playoff teams of pre99 to the quality of playoff teams today.
I agree with u...in my book Shawn Kemp is one of the greatest power forwards ever...it's him, Sir Charles and the Mailman...and as 4 G.P even though I wasnt exactly crazy about him when u look at his stats and accomplishments he's still one the top pgs ever...
I agree 100% with everything u say...but Im also sure that Kobe, BronBron, D Wade, Superman, Melo and Yao woulda been very good and even great, even back then...
@dv122 no, they can play a zone today. if the defense was way worse, the teams would score more points. they score less than they did back then. jordan is the best to ever play but no need to make up stuff to make it even more apparent. what kobe and lebron have done in their time is very impressive, just not jordan. one thing jordan had to his benfit throughout his career is weak two guards throughout the league. today you have a ton of 6'6"-6'8" guards, back then jordan was tall for a 2 guard
@kelvincarter989 i dont think u are even close to getting the point. before, though 2 guards were smaller they will overpower u by means of hand checking. size aint a big deal coz they can use their hands to defend u so tell me how did size became an argument in MJ's era? if u talk about now, players at the 2 guard position may have gone bigger but since they cant use their hands to defend what happens is... a clear path to the lane. now tell me again... what's the use of the height advantage?
@dv122 Jordan is the best player to ever play this game but Jordan's 35, 5, and 5 on 50% FG is no more impressive than LeBron's STATS. Defense is softer but Jordan didnt have to score against a zone nor did he have to finish on athletic centers. Hence much fewer points scored today. Jordan was the only athlete of his caliber back then, today there are guys as ATHLETIC (not skilled) on every team at many positions. What separates MJ/LBJ is HOW they do it and the end result when it matters
I think Jordan had like 3 or 4 blocks on Rodman alone in this game, but I remember the one @ 4:23 being on Michael Jordan's Playground when they were talking about Jordan's defense!!!
THIS JORDAN SHOULD BE IN NBA JAM ON FIRE EDITION
