Hello, I am new at smoking pipe and i have a couple of problems.. 1) the tobbacco is being burnt too quick and in about 10-15 minutes there is no tobbaco left, only ashes... 2) after i'm done smoking, my tongue hurts... 3) i taste nothing but smoke... i dont know if i misunderstood something but i think that pipe smoke is supposed to have some kind of... taste... obviously i'm doing something wrong... please, can you give me some advice?? thank you

@BerZoDsan It could be the tobacco is too dry. If you take a pinch and roll it in your fingers and it crumbles into a fine dust then it is too dry. Also it could be packed too lightly, not compact enough. Also you could be puffing too quickly. If you get tongue bite from hot smoke, you probably won't be able to taste it. I use a small amount of sesame seed oil on a spoon and rub it on my tongue, that helps with the burn on the tongue.

@eastofakron1 I usually don't have to do that very often, I rotate all my pipes. But to clean a stem well, I use a commercial pipe cleaner from a tobac shop and a pipe cleaner. To clean the shank, I use a cotton ear swab and pipe cleaner or liquor, like vodka or whiskey. No rubbing alcohol!

thanks, you are correct about the rubbing alcohol, I had a beautiful dark brown pipe that I ruined because I was new to pipes and used rubbing alcohol which took off the exterior finish.

If you have a good tobacco shop locally, I would start there. Probably you should start with a corncob, pipe tamper, and an oz or so of different types of tobacco. Usually the person at the tobacco shop can help you get started. There are many good videos on here on packing and lighting a pipe. It will take some patience to learn to pack the tobacco correctly, because that will mean a good smoke. If you like the flavors and smoking a corncob then you might consider a cheap briar.

One of my favorite tobaccos is Sherlock Holmes blend. If you can find a pipe shop ask them for a sweet-tasting mild aromatic blend which you can buy in bulk fairly cheap. Do some google searches about pipe-smoking tips, pipe-styles and tobacco blends, thats how I found out almost everything I know and how I bought most of my pipes and tobaccos.

I usually smoke only aromatics, and I always suffer from agressive tongue bite if I try to puff that fast. :/ But then again, all tobaccos you can get from Denmark are usually blends from Peterson ect. For now my favorite blend has been Special Reserve 2005. It smells nice, it tastes as good, and has less tongue bite than the other aromatic Peterson blends. Have any recommendation of some really good aromatic that doesn't bite?

I like Edward's Supreme quite a bit. It can be smoked that fast without any problems . I once had 8 bowls of Ed Supreme in a day with a hint of bite. Most pipe tobaks cannot be smoked that quickly, however.

I was smoking Captain Black Royal(blue). Aromatic, but not my usual.Aromatics have practicaly no bite. Some of the non aromatic (english blends) can bite, like straight Virginias and Burleys. Hardly any cake at all I rotate my pipes and ream them out once a year.
