@MyAngle1231 It doesn't follow the instructions in the box to change them every 4-6 hours at least. But, I have been known to use them at night as your aunt has recommended during the first 2 nights of my cycle since they are very heavy. A super tampon and an overnight pad keep me from making a mess. The rest of the nights I just use a pad. Holly

@TheAnime161 6 Hours is supposed to be the max amount of time. Right before I go to bed on my very heaviest days I will usually put in a Super tampon and an overnight pad. I change it 8 hours later when I wake. I do that about 2 nights of my 6 days of bleeding. The rest of the nights an overnight pad works fine. I'll take a quick shower to clean up in the morning. @SmileyyWasHere Make sure that you use the right size for your flow. Second, wait a little longer to see if it fills more with blood. If it is coated with blood it should come right out. The string it woven through the whole tampon so it won't break. Holly

@iamnumberfour97 It really shouldn't hurt. It is a different sensation you haven't had before, but it is not painful. If there is any discomfort just put a little vaseline on the applicator and it will glide in easily. Yes the tampon goes in your vagina to soak up the blood. Holly

In my mind virginity is about two things...sexual intercourse and willingly deciding to give yourself to someone you love which is a mental thing. Your hymen is rarely effected by tampons. And frankly your hymen is not your virginity. You may just need to give her time. Does she allow your sister to use them? HOlly

@MyMakeupStash1 I think this all sounds perfectly normal. Some girls experience heavy flow at night, some nothing at all. Different for everyone. I think you had a real period, but it can often take a year for things to normalize. So, don't be surprised if it skips a month and then comes back. Or, if next time is heavy instead of light. @Twilight19922008 Yes. The tampon has two plastic parts that fit together. You slide the first part into you all the way to where your fingers are holding it. Then while it is in you, you push the second part all the way to the end which puts the cotton inside of you. Then you pull both part of the plastic out and toss it. @AllOverEverythingAj Ok to use tampons any time you are having your period. I like most name brand tampons, I just prefer plastic applicators because they go in more smoothly. Yes all tampons come in slender, regular, super, super+. You can't flush plastic applicators. I just wrap it in toilet paper or put it back in the wrapper and put it in the trash. For the beach I would use a size larger since it is hard to find bathrooms. Hope it helps you:) Holly

Since they expand and fill with blood, it is hard for me to imagine them slipping out on a young girl. When it is in can you feel it? If you can then it is not in far enough. Holly

@Epiclyfresh Seeing red on the string is a good indicator. No way to know before that really. For sure you should use a panty liner whenever you use a tampon in case you forget to check it sooner. Otherwise change it every 3-4 hours even if you don't see blood. Holly

@Christkid1998 I think pads are best to start with. After a few months when you have a better sense about the flow of your period then start tampons. But, if it is a matter of swimming or doing an activity that you can't use a pad for...don't hesitate to try a slender regular tampon which will easily hold a very light flow for a couple of hours. It doesn't rub inside and hurt, but if you are kind of dry inside it can be tender (not painful) to pull out. Holly:)

@598tay A girl's body goes through changes during the month that signal when she is most fertile and allows the sperm to travel to the egg easily. Dry, chalky, white discharge is one phase. Sticky or creamy is another phase. Very wet, slippery, resembling uncooked egg whites is the phase in which you are most fertile. As you get older you will have less and less discharge. It is all very normal. And a panty liner can help you manage it better if you feel like it is a lot. Holly

I can't tell you for sure when you will see blood with your period. But you could try charting when the discharge is colored and you might see that it happens about the same time each month. Wear a pantiliner to protect your underwear and to make sure that if you have blood you won't get it on your clothes before you can get to a bathroom. Holly

It really depends on why she doesn't...a bad experience, worried about toxic shock, or finds them uncomfortable. If you explain reasonably why you want to use them and demonstrate that you understand the importance of changing them frequently she will probably be ok with it. @90Nicke Sounds like you have many of the signs. I think because your hormones change slowly over time until they get to the point that they signal the start of a cycle...you will find mood swings come and go for a year or so until you start a period. Then the mood swings happen a day or so before your period and into the first day of it. This is all an estimation. Every girl is different. My best guess is that within a year you will start. @suzie4312 It really doesn't hurt. The first time you try it, do it on your heaviest day. Try plastic applicators first because they glide in easily. If you have cardboard applicators try using a little vaseline on the cardboard before inserting it. Also use the smallest size when learning how (slender regulars or lites). Tampons make periods so much easier to handle. Most of your friends by middle school will be using them. If they were painful that wouldn't be the case. Don't worry. Holly:)

@xkimishLOVESyoux Tampons leak depending on how heavy your cycle is. Until you figure out what absorbancy you need be sure to wear a thin pad or panty liner with the tampon. Could be your flow is too heavy for lights and you bleed through quickly. May need to use regulars. Usually if you can feel the tampon then you haven't inserted it far enough. Try pushing it in a little further next time and it should be better. Holly:)

Hi Kathylovestar - Tampons are not made for adults or teens. It really depends on how heavy your flow is. Practice with slender regulars the first time you try tampons. But they will hold very little blood. Most people need regulars or supers. Any brand works just fine. You could watch one of our recent videos on what products we use.

Hi Coke&pepsi, The string really has no where to travel. It can't get lost, and it can't travel into the vaginal canal. It just isn't possible. So don't worry. The string is also sewn into the full length of the tampon. It is impossible for it to break. Plus, because you are on your cycle you won't remove it until it is full which means it is slippery because of the fluids and easy to remove.
