  • Cippolina looks like half Keith Moon, half John Cleese but with long hair.

  • Went to see the Capton . Wow what a Jam this is so good and well recorded........ and Live 5 Stars

  • I actually could recognise Phil's bass. He's such a unique player

  • This a joke, Cipollina could outplay Garcia any day, any time. Gimme a break.

  • @jltardiff No my friend ..no jokes intended....John is my "Ultimate" he was just so in to playing . As you know he played with lots of great musicians and bands , this was just put up to show how much he was loved by so many and how incredible he sounded...being a Brit I didn't get many chances to catch his magic for real but I did twice with Man and once with Nick and those memories will never die ...

  • @unviciouscircle No Problem, I am just a HUGE QMS fan. Who knows what woulda/coulda/shoulda been. Cipollina was head and shoulders above most guitarists around back then. Jeez, what a shame when he died. He and Jerry were best of friends, I know that. Different styles.....Jerry so laid back....John liked to play those stinging leads......Miss em both! Damn.

  • @jltardiff LOL you nuts ? I like Cipollina a lot , but he is not even half the guitar genius Jerry and actually Bob as well are.

  • I was at this show!!!!

  • not fade away/^5

  • The really great ones make it look easy, don't they?

  • I like Cipollina's playing better here.

  • Lee Oskar from War on the harp! He has a regular gig here in the Pacific Northwest at the Hiway 99 Blues Club when he's in town. Still an amazing harmonica player!

  • holy sh*t!

lifted me right out my narcissistic deep depression (yeah ok i'm allowed one of the stages of grief but...)

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>LOVE<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

    ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    :)

    !

  • The Dead at their peak. There was a great band around that time playing around the Bay Area called the "Dinosaurs". Cipollina was lead, Robert Hunter on rhythm, Bill Kreutzmann on drums and some others (I think!!!). I love his sound.

  • @clarkewi ..yer right mate Dinosaurs had a few line ups Barry "the Fish" Melton was also there along with a host of others...like Spencer Dryden etc..by the way was Great to see you guys lift the cup...

  • Thanks 2 all u humble ppl that took the time 2 find and share John C's magic...may u all be blessed!!!

    U all know who u are!!! :)

  • @Jenscool Peace Friend

  • @clarkewi No, it was Robert Hunter, John Cippolina, Barry Melton on guitars, Perter Albin on bass, and Spencer Dryden on drums.

  • @pumazpawz That sounds right. Hearing Cippolina and Barry Melton play together was magic.

  • All i can say is: once wasn't enough;

i need to hear this again this morning. It will perhaps entice the slow serpent lazily coiled in a hidden cavern of my body to rise and return my body to its Natural psychedelic winged lizard Form

    One can always hope

  • Lee Oskar from WAR on harp...stellar!

  • @somepig2k Historic gig indeed... Closing of Winterland

  • Bobby even gets a chance to play lead on this one.

    Great show.

  • @sallymander57 :-) nice to see someone noticed that too. This is one of the greatest pieces of Music ever played; i've heard it since 3 decades and it still astounds......amazes....and mystifies me ;-)

    Happy trails, friend

  • cippolina could always make your braincells jump right off the track ....ooops , there went another flying neuron !!!!!!! ;o)

  • @Treadlightlyful no no! that should read 'On Track' ;-) heh heh... i love to see those things fly around :-D

  • Comment removed

  • Cipollina is the best guitarist on that stage.

  • lee oscer too!

  • This shit...now this shit...its jus so curly Thanks for posting

  • There is just no one who could build a groove like this. So intricate and yet, so smooth.

  • Hot Damn! Love the summit meeting between the Dead and that Cippolina man!

  • Intense, as always Mr. Cipollini was. Thank you for sharing.

  • This is NYE 1978, Winterland's last night. See Keith on the piano? He and Donna left in Feb. 1979.

I remember sitting in front of a 6" b&w TV (that I bought for the occasion) in Palo Alto, listening on KSAN and watching on KQED...

  • This is straight nasty :) :)

  • tho is one of the stoniest jams ever….LOVE IT

  • this is the best thing in the world

  • Synch is fine. Watching the wizard's fingers closely, solo looking perfectly synched. Always love to see these people together on one stage . A classic piece.

  • @WEIR4EVER didn't think I was cracking up yet...

  • @unviciouscircle Not today anyways! LOL ;-) love ya Bro

  • @unviciouscircle not a chance bro, you'll crack on everything else before you do on the Music of your soul!

  • Only thing that hurts, is you don't hear the Around & Around that comes right when it cuts!

Lord the joint was jumping! Goin' round and round... reelin & rockin, what a crazy sound! Lord they never stopped rockin' till the moon went down.... : dreamy face :

  • I don't know how the stage floor kept from caving in. So much talent!

  • Too many guitarists couldn't really fit into the Dead's onstage groove (look up Pete Townsend with the Dead), but John does a fine job here.

    What DVD is this from?

  • W O W!

  • I was at this show.

  • I believe this was NYE 1979, Oakland

  • all i can say is thanks

  • Anyone who voted that they don't like can kiss my *ss

  • I have this DVD and the CD. To me, the bonus material was worth the price of the DVD. Not only did I find out that Cipollina played with a pic (sp?) on every finger I found out that it is only through modern technology that they were even able to bring this out of the vault. The technicians said :"This one was for Dick," from 'Dick's Picks.'

  • That's Lee Oskar from War on harp. Believe they played Cow Palace NYE 78.The mirror ball looks like WInterland. I think I might have been at this show, seems familiar

  • That's Lee Oskar from War on harp. Believe they played Cow Palace NYE 78

  • @Cometsamba In my opinion Lee is the best Harp player to come down the pike in 40yrs, Magic Dick is alright but Lee is is the Master.

  • Absolutely Vicious Un.

  • The music still lives, through the internet. This concert is an excellent example of muscians interacting creatively and making music. Its not commerical, its not pop, Its not over dubbed, mixed and fixed in the studio. It is real. Thank You. I too appreciated the lack of negative cooments and "who is Better than Who" That gets really old

  • I wonder if young players nowadays "get" the whole concept of jamming. Beautiful clip. It's also very refreshing to see a comments section which doesn't have a discussion of "who is the most awesome".

    Thank you for posting this.

  • What an incredible synthesis. So many musicians to miss.

  • My wife and I often say we were lucky to be here at this time and place and to have lived through the life changes we experienced during the 60s and 70s. You know our love will not fade away!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW! This is great, thank you for sharing this! Do you have anymore from this show? I'll check DeadBase & try to find some info on the date & venue for you. Thanx again. This made my morning! I loves me some Dead & Cipollina is one of the most underrated guitarist ever, in my opinion.

PEACE & MUCH LOVE TO YOU & YOUR'S!!!!

  • I talked to Cipollina once when QMS played here. He was a very approachable and warm person, very genuine. He was smearing some kind of oil on the neck of his sg and said it was very difficult to get. I can't remember what he said it was.

  • This is indeed 12/31/78.

  • Sounds like a piece of Mona jam into NFA. The sound is incredible, better with headphones, the mixing is delectible. I think JC played with them 12/31/78 at the closing of winterland. I remember Donna looking amazing.

  • Possibly Winterland NYE '78?

  • @Umberto2 right time of year and venue as to the year not sure now..thanx for dropping by and taking the time to leave a comment though..always great to hear from appreciative ears .

  • @Umberto2 - Deadfinately looks like the closing of Winterland. I have the DVD. The harmonica player is a Danish guy played with War, his name's Lee Oskar....

  • @Umberto2 That sounds about right it was The closing of Winterland and this is the 3rd set. The Blues Brothers and New Riders also played. I was in the 1st row of the balcony at this point.

  • @Umberto2 I think it's '77

  • @Umberto2 yeppers, this is the Closing of Winterland

  • Exceptional…..the essence of absolute psychedelic synchronicity & unadulterated FUN that we got down to so Gratefully….this is amazing….the Vibe on video, rare! Thank You!

  • Looks & sounds like it's from the '78-'79 period.

  • I like how the dead plays like they aren't in a hurry to get where they are goin' .cipollina is the s4at 2

  • delicious jam!! god bless you, unviciouscircle!

  • You just can not miss Johns sound, whereever you find him playing, there is that shrill string screamin.

  • Great era for THE DEAD.....is this around 1977?

  • What a fat sweet groove! I love it! I'm quickly becoming a Cipollina fan. I love Bobby's slide solo and that guitar! Jerry's moves are really sweet too. Thank you for posting this rare and beautiful gem.

  • @weirdreamin ..glad your getting in to JC.....such original musical talent is rare...when you find it though, it becomes intoxicating....Season Greetings to you.

  • unviciouscircle u r kind thank you big love too you brother peace

  • Such feeling! Such perfection! I 'm almost stoned just by the sound of it.

    Thanks a lot my friend.

  • @archimedesnation comments like yours make it so very worthwhile...thanks 'n' have a great time whatever your doing ...

  • @unviciouscircle

That's the kind of attitude i miss more and more in the internet nowadays. Not only you have great taste in music, you are polite as well. Now, that's rare man. Very rare indeed...

Remain golden and keep on rockin for the rest of your life bro

  • @unviciouscircle its out of phase

  • @titicaca321 if your saying the sound is not in sync then you are the only one so far to have had grief which is a shame. Every Mac and PC I have seen this on has been fine to watch.

  • @unviciouscircle Yep, u got that right, Dave...hope all's cool with & yours!!! :)

  • @shotdonkey so they had technical hassles .Cipollina was the entire bands Hero...remember the rest in the book in how when they met at the Heliport? Yeah I got both Dekes books and both signed by the Man, don't go knocking the good intentions they all had ..dont even think Deke would think too highly of your comments....why did he join the Helps on Xmas at the Patti and do such a blinding version of Mona...think your very wrong with your comment. But let the rest of the world judge your words.

  • @shotdonkey if you would have read the book, you'd know the only song chippo didn't play on was Bananas, because his hawaii guitar was out of tune.

  • The Dead is an amazing band - they were jamming with a lot of guest musicans, like Dylan, Joplin, Santana, Cippolina, Allman Brothers .........unfortunatelly they came to Germany only 2 times, 1974 and 1981 in Munich. It was not very far for me from Vienna to Munich. This was the only time I have seen the Dead in concert.....it was amazing!

  • I think one person missed the like button.

  • @irlandos1 saw that too....Time for a visit to Spec Savers may be?lol...

  • if you always wondered about the strange sounds john gets out of his guitar it's cool to SEE him play. btw just got MAN - "maximum darkness", a '75 live album featuring the Manband at their peak with john as special guest, a-ma-zing!!!

  • @WizardofFuzz ...saw the gigs at the Roundhouse..well two of the three....so yeah John with Man was amazing alright....great day to you and thanks for dropping by to leave a comment.

  • I have this DVD, I need to upload the whole show. I also have a JGB show that is phenomenal.

A long time deadhead said that "I have never seen Jerry as high as this, he was ripped during this show" you can see it too

  • This is weird....wow !!! It must be an unforgettable moment if you was there !!!!

    thanks for this video !!!!

  • Wow. Bob's guitar is gorgeous, must be a custom built.

  • Thank you very much for posting this. It is a high quality item featuring John. Although John more or less kept to the same distinctinve, unmistakable, sound and did not move very far beyond the Quicksilver musically (i.e. from 1966 on), he was always amazing and without doubt one of the all-time greats of rock'n' roll. Here one can see his playing really close up and it becomes apparent how gently he plays the strings and how much he uses the tremolando of his 'special'.

  • Wonderful - thankyou!

  • John Cipollina will Never Fade Away

  • Fab....amazing post,thank you for sharing.

  • Fat large and really hip to these new school further folks!!!

  • Hey hey... next on my night journey.... This Classic SOARS, Dave! I love it. A must in any collection in my book. John shimmers!

  • I was there and John Cipollina electrified the audience, and of course The Dead❢

  • So who's blowing harp? I can't decide if it's Paul Butterfield with an Afro or Lee Oskar of War.

  • @Ishmael932 100 pct lee oskar!

  • The Closing of Winterland

a personal favorite of mine ......one great ride from start to end....I take that ride over and over again and never get tried of it been available for years on DV

  • Oh Donna too...............

  • a fuller sound than QSMS ....... a real treat...... is there an album out there with this gig on it????

  • "Does anybody wanna buy my shirt? I'll trade ya my shirt for a grilled cheese!" 0_0

  • This reminds me of a Winterland show I saw in 73 with Cip & Copperhead, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop. all their bands and the Sons of Champlin. In that monster jam, somebody in the audience said they could play harp better than Bloomfield's harmonica player. So they brought him onstage where he proceeded to blow everybody away.

  • THESE GUYS ARE IN BEAUTIFUL FORM

  • Man I love it when I hear music that gives me goose bumps!

  • What an extraordinary treat for the senses. Their sounds work so well together. Just about the right amount of vocals for THE jamband, too. Thanks so much for posting this remarkable vid.

  • @lightlyone Yeah , it does work really well...really glad it made you feel like leaving a nice comment...thanks

  • Awesome........!

  • This is glorious. Two of my very favorite guitarists TOGETHER.

  • Wow, just great to see and hear Cipollina with the dead doing Not Fade Away--Cipollin's sound is so unique and unlike any other guitarist's sound--thankyou you so much, Freeman

  • There are hundreds o great guitarists of course; but only a few that you can identify within three or four notes, eg BB King, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, George Harrisson, Mick Jones and of course this guy!

  • Nobody ever gave me chills like Cipollina but SteffanLlwyd how bout both these guys? JC & JG. This is great stuff thanks!
