What are you all going on about??? At the time, every emerging band was on TOTP. It was a promotional tool. Doesn't mean they weren't great live as well. And many of them, when on TOTP didn't take themselves too seriously, since it WAS playback & they figured the public knew it.
Another example of an exraordinary ska band who gave/still gives super live shows & were on TOTP, not always taking themselves seriously: The Specials!
Oh my gosh! I remember watching this the first time round and was even telling my daughter about him taking his jacket off a the end and strolling off all cool... and he did! Good memories from watching this. The eighties were the best, man!
To those waffling on about the lip synch thing. This is a 2 Tone era band. Most of these bands took the piss at times throughout their clips. Madness and Bad Manners were notorious for it.
I think this 'LipSync' argument is a joke, with regards to this particular video. Dave is giving the, obvious to me at least, nod and wink all through the performance, which makes it clear that he's not really trying to pretend to be singing live. There are many other more overt examples over the years of artists proving that TOTP was never live, but bands needed this exposures, as back then, it was the only show in town.
Bit harsh slagging the beat of for miming, as mentioned by HunterMann they would have been coerced into playing the show by their management, and the production would have insisted on the miming. Lets not forget that Saxa appeared on TOTP around the same time "Playing" the saxaphone with a balloon sticking out the end to highlight the fact that it was all mimed!

@heru1966 Yes, I should be so purist about music film clips from back then, in fact the Soundies & Scopitone music films of the 1940's thru 1960's were all lip sync. I will say that most people's first contact with a band back in the 1960's was radio air-play. Then they'd catch the TV performances on TV on the weekends, like on Ed Sullivan show, Soul Train and American Bandstand. There were two later shows that were always live: The Midnight Special and Don Kirschner's In Concert
@heru1966 Definitely a great band, but miming a song just never quite satisfies. Oddly, I've heard cover/tribute bands do better versions of an original band's song. While not miming, tribute bands are basically sound-alike/impersonators. Like the bands you mentioned, I also go on record as saying that I find the miming weird.
As a sidebar, interesting that The Beatles were not really a concert band, preferring the studio. I did like the rooftop "concert" in Let It Be.
@heru1966 They didn;t stoop? Apparently they stooped from the start. That's fine if that's all they could do, but lip-syncing is not really a performance. I can just image how dull it must have seemed to the studio audience. In general, I think it was the record company excess that demanded that the groups lip sync. They wanted them to sound exactly like the record and that would sell more records. Reality: most bands are studio artists, not live ones.
One of the truly lame things about the MTV years was that very few of the performances were actually "live". This one is a good example of lip-synching. Look for the guitar amps & actual working microphones...what a joke! Sad that The Beat stooped to this low level, it was for the money..
