It's hard to pick Deanna's most perfect performance, but this is as close to perfection as one can get I would say. She could sing modern, operetta, folk, everything! She could sing it sweet, sultry, tragic, sad and glad.
Extraordinary and fabulous are adjectives that do not do justice to this incredible singing. I understand she lives in France. Does anyone know how to get a letter to her?
@usagigurl Durbin was born in Canada and raised in California. She retired from movies at the age of 27 and moved to France. She has only done one interview in 62 years. As of 2010 she is 89.
I found violinthief while looking for a different recording. When I saw the pic of Deanna Durbin, I had to check it out. So happy I did! I used to love watching Deanna's old movies on TV. Such a clear smooth voice. Not a rough edge anywhere! If you haven't yet done so, check out her version of Nessun Dorma, not usually sung by a woman.
I'vwe not heard this one before. It's gorgeous! Thanks for the posting. I discovered Deanna Durbin in a seniors course I took this past summer titled "Hollywood Sopranos" and just fell in love with her. She'll be happy to know that. :-)Thanks again and have a great holiday.
When I "surf" You Tube, I am always surprised - pleasantly so - that so many You Tubers are posting Deanna Durbin numbers from her movies, and how many of them are also opera fans. Had she chosen to do so, she would have been an opera star of the first magnitude. Imagine her in some of the leading diva roles in Mozart operas - the "ina" roles, and Musetta and/or Mimi, or Marie in Donizetti's daughter. And she sang arias opposite some of the leading tenors of her day. Wow!
I am not an opera buff but I know of nobody else I would have liked to hear singing opera. There is a purity in her voice and technique that is a joy to behold. Dame Sister Mary Leo from New Zealand trained many famous sophanos and use Deanna as her model attempting to get all her students to be like Deanna. There are several stories like that. One thing for sure we are blessed to have heard her.
the girls in movies back then were so innocent looking
