Dub was a renaissance man - he was in literally EVERYTHING - the most popular face on TV who's name very few people knew, but as soon as you see his face, you say "Oh yeah, I remember him." He was a BRILLIANT commedian and always ALWAYS made people laugh. THAT was his one wish in life, to make people happy and make his characters believable. I still remember the one little scene he had in the Back to the Future movies, and he was fantastic. This was a man who could steal an entire scene. RIP DUB
Dub Taylor was in Everything---if you ever saw 'You Can't Take it with You' from '38 w/ Capra and Stewart, or say eps. of Bonanza or Little House--he's there.
@warriorsorochiman These commercials were directed by my Dad back in the late 70's and early 80's. The white haired gentleman is absolutely Dub Taylor, and the gentleman riding the horse " The Gum Fighter" is Don Collier. All the commercials were shot in "Old Tucson" Arizona. The series Gunsmoke was where Dub Taylor appearred regularly. His son who was also on Gunsmoke, played the Deputy to Matt Dillion. Hope that clears up some of the misconceptions.
@Mommashaw1 Thanks for the extra info! I've always loved the expression 'big bubbles, no troubles!'. My friends and I stole it when we were kids and have been using it for years instead of saying 'piece of cake'. Your dad is also a rockstar to us!
Without these commercials, there would never have been such a great catch phrase at trying times! Thank you!
My wife and I recently flew to Pheonix, AZ, to the Festival of the West. We got to meet the Gum Fighter: Don Collier. He was super nice and full of jokes. He told us that these hubba bubba commericials were made in Australia over a span of 8 years.
That's weird now, because there is a sharper copy of another HB ad from Grubco TV, and I always assumed they were made in Oz... (and I guess the Gum Fighter would know)... but in the other one, there's an old white-haired guy who looks a bit like American character actor Dub Taylor (but isn't); yet I would swear in this one, that is none other than Dub Taylor himself... anyone know?
Not sure about the other one you mentioned, but in this particular commerical (raspberry), and the other two commericals I have seen on youtube, I know that it is Dub Taylor. Dub is one of my favorite actors, I recognize him really fast. Got to meet his son Buck Taylor (Newly from Gunsmoke) at the festival of the west. A kind and caring person.
I just checked the commercial from Grubco TV...your right, its not dub taylor. I have not idea who he is. Good eye, anyone else would just assume it was Dub.
Thanks for that. I guess the only answer we can be sure of is that they must have flown him to Oz for at least some of the ads. Asked a buddy who says he was in BACK TO THE FUTURE 3 after these ads were made, so it isn't like he passed away while the ads were still being made ...
Your right again. He was in Back to the future III, which was around 1990. From what I can find out, Dub lived till 1994. According to the Internet Movie Database, he died of congestive heart failure on Oct. 3 1994, at the age of 87. Looks like he was credited with about 228 movie/tv appearances.
I was about 5 or 3 when this commercial played. Nostagia... :D

When we were kids it was Hubba Bubba vs. Bubble Yum. I prefered Yum but both were great.

@Mommashaw1 Yep, and these commercials were entertaining and fun. Don Collier was also in the old west show "The Outlaws". Have you seen that show?

OMG...I loved these commercials. But why did they stop running the Gumfighter spots on TV?
SkyfireTheFox 5 years ago
Yeah, and who's the actor who played the Gumfighter?
patrickballoonman 5 years ago
Disregard that question. I just found out that the Gumfighter was Don Collier. And in case you're wondering that's Dub Taylor in the Derby hat.
