  • 0_-

    My last name is Siegfried!

  • I am watching an opera writting by Wagner in the 1800s, and then on the left there are 4 videos such as playboy playmate and me and my favorite panties. wtf?

  • Some may have called this production 'old fashioned'--but they are NUTS. This is entertaining and good to look at--it honors the mythic roots of the Ring.

  • Does anyone have this last DVD (4th of 4) or the torrent for it? Can't find anywhere! Thx.

  • @133839297 I have the DVD - I'd be happy to pass it on to you if you can tell me how.

  • NEVER accept a drink from a Gibichung.

  • simply excellent !!!

  • dude you know this is like, my favorite scene of all time! I totally love this one THANKS SO MUCH

  • this will always be the definitive ring

    The vocalists, fabulous.

but does Gunter approve, or not?

Is he with Hagan, or ambivalent about a rival (of sorts) removed?

Stabbed in the back just as he regains himself, wonderful staging

Especially thank you Siegfried Jerusalem as Siegfried

    Matti Salminen as Hagen --

    and GreatPerformers for posting

  • Levine mediocre at best!

  • Richard Wagner--the Greatest of all composers!! The Ring--greatest of all artistic creations! All hail!!

  • Sigfried gets the spear int he back at 4:35...before that he's confessing. The drinking horn has a potion that brings his memory back of his betrayals and such.

  • Gr8 Opera! But, it's painful listening 2 Jerusalem:( Sorry, but he ain't no Heldentenor! Such tension in his singing!!! He tried:)

  • @omegadoom006 it's painful to try to devine a desparaging remark of someone with talent, typed by someone without proper language.

  • It takes Siegfried 20 minutes to die?

  • hagen es un cabron ejeje

  • @kemikal069

¿Y qué se creía Sigfried que le daban? ¿Peyote? jejejejejejee

  • siegfried could have been a bit better. he sounds like he's forcing it too much. hagen is great though

  • Lovely music and playing! TY.

  • I loved the look of this Ring the sets all of the singers except Morris. Ive never seen a guy make a carear out of singing out of the side of his mouth. He was never Wotan.

  • Incredible Hagen!

  • woow the acord on 4:12

  • @pearlab23 Erm yes....not sure why that would make his music suddenly bad though.

  • @pearlab23 we are interested in the phantastic music. not in history

  • @pearlab23 we are interested in the phantastic music. not in history. go to bed and cry there, but not here!

  • hmtag und nacht träume ich davon dass sich jemnd findet der mich vor meiner langweile erlöst^^

  • I have this MET version of the Ring in DVD, its probably along with the Bareboim Bayreth production the best Ring ever made. Matti Salmimen actualy scares me as Hagen, perfection for the work of the greatest artistic genuis of the history of manking. Thank you Mr James Levine and Otto Schenk

  • Danke Meister Wagner, deine Musik ist für die Ewigkeit.

  • My first opera was The Ring. Loved it. My wife was OK with it. The statement to not make The Ring your first opera based on its "accessibility" comes off as more than a bit pompous. If a person reads literature and enjoys classical music they should be able to find much enjoyment in The Ring. If The Ring is going to be replacing your night(s) out at the local megaplex you may be a bit disappointed. (Hows that for adding a dash of my own pompousness!)

  • I agree. If I had discovered opera with Puccini I would have been completely uninterested.

  • extremement terrible jusqu'au pénible moment de la mort

Agonie douloureuse sur le plan musical et scénique et plein usage du leit motiv

  • Jerusalem is overstrained in this role - this quite is clearly to be heard here; if I might say so ...

  • 6.40 is amazing

  • I've never been to the Opera as it isn't very accessable up in the north of England.

I know I'd love it though and will no doubt as I get older make the effort to go to London to see a performance.

What would be a good first Opera? I love this Wagner piece though, at the end of John Boormans Exclibur... Stunning.

  • I actually wouldn't recommend Wagner for a newcomer to opera. Puccini tends to be a good bet for neophytes, his operas are exciting and instantly accessible. Try 'Tosca', 'Madame Butterfly', 'La Boheme', 'Turandot'. You can't go wrong there!

  • Wagner is the only opera I really enjoy and I'm somewhat of a newcomer.

I don't see why everyone treats it as being so inaccessible....

  • If Wagner, than begin with "Flying Dutchman"

  • maybe Puccini's Operas are shorter... but enter his women's psichology is not so easy, also for the language (old Italian, colser to Tuscan dialect)

  • Where in the North are you? Opera North tours up there, and they are a very good company, with very accessible work.

  • After Siegfried is restored to his right mind and Hagen stabs him, what motif do we hear?

The very same motif we heard on the awakening of Brünhilde, as she awoke half-mortal.

This is the genius of Wagner.

  • Jerusalem does a great job portraying Siegfried. He also plays Loge in Das Rheingold.

  • I was thinking of writing an opera so I've had a Wagner night ........big mistake! I now have no faith in my own ability, there's no way I could do it. This guy was just too good.

  • Don't give up! Just go for it. We can't all be Wagners but that's no reason not to give it your best shot. (And I bet even Wagner felt like that sometimes faced with a blank manuscript...)

  • If you can even think of writing an opera I envy you.

Alas, the fate of opera is sad. The 'masses' think they hate classical music, yet they hear it each time they see a movie. So, Hollywood both grabs and destroys classical music talent.

  • oh god. everytime i hear the "heil dir sonne" chord and he says "brünnhilde", the tears start flowing. such a beautiful moment, so beautifully acted!

  • Yes, indeed: that's the magic of Wagner's music. The power of love has made her leitmotif his own. Beautiful and moving.

  • It's incredible that Hagen it's a respected caracter in Germany

  • dump idiot he isnt a "respected caracter in Germany". . . He stands for betrayal and avarice but JUST BLAME GERMANY U RETARD

  • So, that speaks bad from you, germans....

  • well is he a respected person, no he isnt is he . . .

  • Pointless discussion. Are we sure that Sigfried or Hagen ever existed? It's just a legend or what? As far as I have read, I'm not certain, I wish they have existed, because they are great caracters. Well, have a nice day. Greetings from Mexico.

  • "Are we sure that Sigfried or Hagen ever existed? "

    :D

  • I don't understand your quote

  • ?????

  • King Wittekind went and lived with King Siegfried during his 30 years war with Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire. Yes, Siegfried was a real person.

  • Salminen is great... but listen to Krauss or Kna's Rings...... this one will disappear!

  • The setting is so boooring! But Siegfried and Matti are great.

  • The setting is great!

  • I think the setting is déjâ vu... It looks like dozens of other productions: the director lacks a bit of imagination...

  • Which other productions? In Europe, we do not have one production like this. The operas are set in kitchens, WCs, dumping grounds and so on. Be glad, that at the US, there is a different kind of staging. Regietheater sucks!!!!!

  • In Europe we've seen uncountless "classic" productions like that one...

It is true that some productions suck, but I've just attended the Ring at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia, with a wonderful production by La Fura dels Baus (Zubin Mehta, conductor), and all I can say is that is has been wonderful, with a creative, respectful setting... All that Wagner wrote is there without that 'smell' of XIX century theatre.

I've attended a few live Met operas, some good some bad, as any other place.

  • Uncountless??? Where??? I will go there! In Germany "regietheater" rules!:-((((

  • I mean uncountless settings in the past...

You dislike "modern" productions, but consider that one gets tired of seeing the same Butterfly, Tannhäuser or Werther year after year... Settings should be innovative, otherwise we'd attend the same performances our grandparents did; theatre shouldn't be a static thing. With respect to the intentions of the composer, why not include new points of view to a work that has been presented so many times in the classical form?

  • just watched the pictures of the Ring at Valencia. I like the MEt production more. It is more romantic and I would love to see this Ring live!!!!!

  • Believe me, the Valencia Ring is fantastic. It uses some of the same artifacts Wagner designed for Bayreuth in 1876, but made out of metal instead of wood, etc. Moreover, there is a sword, a ring, a Rhine, a fire, a woodbird, an anvil, a dragon, etc, etc. We could say it is a classic performance using present day technology. I bet you wouldn't be dissappointed if you'd attend a performance next season in Valencia or Florence...

  • very good version...I get one full version from Karajan ....For looking, I am happy to see something you can compare to old time with authentic clothes...

  • Strange... in all the versions I've heard of Sigmund's/Siegfried's death, he was pierced through his one weakspot with a spear by Hagen/Hagan after his wife is tricked into marking where the point is on his tunic.

  • No he had no weak spot as far as I know. he was simply stabbed in the back!

  • You are correct. In Act II, Brunhilde, in a regrettable act of jealousy, informs Hagen that Siegfried has a weak spot in his back. Siegfried had been bathed in majic water by his mother, Sieglinde, who neglected to bathe his back because she thought he would never turn his back on an enemy. In Act III, following a feast, Siegfried regains his memory, realizes he has betrayed Brunhilde, but is stabbed in the back by Hagen before he can make amends to Brunhilde.

  • lol, magic water?, it was the blood of a dragon he killed before, only one spot was left uncovered cause a leaf fell on his back... Hagen said that he wants to defend his weakspot so she should mark his tunic...

  • @phil2u: Actually, the reason for Siegfried's nigh invulnerability was because he bathed in Fafnir's blood after slaying him with Gram/Balmung, but a leaf fell on one spot, rendering that as his only vulnerability. And Brunhilde became the wife of Siegfried's best friend and brother-in-law (whose name escapes me). Kriemhild, Siegfried's wife, was deceived by Hagen into marking his only vulnerable point because Hagen said he'd protect Siegfried. Hagen killed Siegfried, stole Kriemhild's treasure

  • (continued from previous)

and sunk it in the river. Kriemhild then exacts her revenge, planning it out.

  • Thank you.

Your comment has made my cock throb uncontrollably. I mean, uh...

  • thank you for posting this; great acting, orchestra and good singing teamwork beginning at 6:40 or so. I am not one to shy away from strongly presented emotion and drama in these epics!

  • Please forgive me....i punched the wrong button....you didn't give me a poor comment, i could see that you have a good sense of humor and i have bumbling fingers!

  • I played tympani in high school and our head music teacher was German. He was into Wagner and very little Sousa inclined (thank god).

We played a lot of Wagners Ring.....can anyone imagine the feeling and exhultation playing tympani in Wagners pieces.

......almost as good as having sex!

  • im sorry..wagner beats sex everytime!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "Wagner beats sex everytime", i do agree with you SWEYNE.. But my being 16 and 17 years of age feeling all that power that i could wield from the timpani, "what an experience for me"!

    Women 1st....Wagner 2nd!

Remarkedly and i'm guessing, that a lot of us pretty much like anything that is Wagner; i do!

  • And I thought I liked Wagner.

  • I strongly disagree!!!! They both go together along with a bottle of Perrier Jouvet Fleur de Champagne. Oh what a wonderful evening that would be. A bit of Tristan und Isolde comes to mind.

  • @sweyne1972 Or as I shrieked while having sex with Tristan - "JUST COME ALREADY!"

  • @sweyne1972 in my opinion Wagner makes sex worthwhile but then again you maybe right even without the sex it is great

  • Matti Salminen is the man. Levine is good here but I think his Bayreuth Goetterdaemmerung is better. Jerusalem and Behren sing with cracked voices right from the first duet but amazingly they manage to make it through to the end. Jerusalem's voice is heard in much better form in the Kupfer/Barenboim video.

  • Exponentially. In fact, when I first saw "Siegfried Jerusalem" in this video, before I saw "Matti Saminen" I actually thought it was from Barenboim.
