  • I would've loved to hear Brad Kane sing this.

  • Wonder what Aladdin did to mess up?

  • Man, do those guys know how to bring tears to a person's eyes.

  • Oh, God, Howard...

  • This song didn't quite work for Treasure Planet but I hope someday there'll be a GREAT movie where this song will shine high and bright !

    THANK YOU HOWARD !!!

  • They should have used this song in King of thieves. It fits.

  • I sang this at my graduation speech. It was stupid but worth it.

  • Alan Menken is amazing... I already loved Aladdin and this makes me love it even more. And now my eyes are teary.

  • To a man who gave a Mermaid her voice and a beast his sole!

  • @TheMormonSorceress Why would anyone give the Beast a fi- oh, a soul! Sorry.

  • @gbindahouse94 That's okay! I need to work on my spelling anyway.

  • @moviefannnnnn Howard died of AIDS at the age of 40.

  • R.I.P. Howard Ashman :'(

    God rest his soul.

  • 1:42

  • its terrible that they had to take out such a wonderful song :(

  • I'm kinda glad they removed the scene, kinda makes the story a lot more complicated for 90s.

  • I'm crying, I'm so glad Alan's version is available for us to enjoy and I feel that his is more powerful, because he had that relationship with Howard that would give him more emotion to put into this song

  • 3 people are Jafar

  • @nurfbandana nope, four are

  • Disney movie's haven't seen the same since

  • The tears are falling. I will admit, the tears are indeed falling.

  • I'm going to be honest, if this song was left in it would probably be my favorite song in the movie, and thus my favorite Disney song since my favorite is A whole new world.

  • I could see this as like a flashback scene. like, in the movie, as Abu and Aladdin are going to bed, he dreams of his past and sings this.

  • Howard would be proud. This song is in my eyes the highlight of the new stage musical which just previewed tonight. It is an amazing song I love it

  • 1:42 directly to song

  • The third person who pressed the dislike button was Abis Maul

  • Even though this part and song is not much important for the movie, but it's beautiful moment and touching part that would enrich it.

  • three people have no childhood.

  • Crying. Forever crying because of this song.

  • beautiful song. does anyone know how howard ashman died?

  • @moviefannnnnn He died from AIDS, and poor dear, I imagine that was an awful way to go. :(

  • @KougasGal101 oh thats sad. poor guy.

  • @moviefannnnnn HIV/AIDS

  • @GoddessOfWhim2003 That's perfect! Damn it, Disney! They can never figure this kind of stuff out!

  • This song should be released commercially just as it is. TT _ TT

  • Who's voicing Aladdin in those early storyboard sequences? That doesn't sound like Scott Weinger.

  • @vnisanianisback This demo is By Alan Menken, who worked algon side with Howard Ashman.

  • @red09323 Just to clarify, you mean to say that Menken sings this song, and DOES Aladdin's voice in those rough storyboard sequences?

  • @vnisanianisback In many animated movies, the story boards sequences have, often, the animators voices, before the real actors goes and remake 'em. Kind of give the idea of the dialogs and how it will look.

I don't think m. Menken would have done Aladdin's voice in the storyboards, he was probably working on the music and songs during this time. :)

  • See, the song's still here. :)

  • Very touching... I will forever love this song...

  • I like that Abu better.

  • @markmansion I like this Iago better, he's more cooler

  • Those three people... they simply have no souls.

  • I would sing this to my mother because it express what I feel for her so very well.

I'm almost heartbroken that I cannot sing on-key to save my life.

  • If you want to blame someone for Aladdin's mother being removed from the story, blame Jeffrey Klatzenburg! He felt that the script "didn't engage" so it was rewritten. However, I belive that Aladdin having a mother whom he wanted to make proud of him would get him a lot more sympathy.

  • Yeah i have to agree, I would have loved if they had placed in the plot of the mother, so it gives more depth to Aladdin's character, than just a 'lucky' thief, but that he needed to find a better future for him and his mother. Not only being a 'teen' in love, but that he also had that other family side of him.

  • @Shanazaki very true!

  • And here I thought he was orphaned.

  • ... Aladdin originally had a mother?! oo

As for the song, it's really sad. Both the song and the history behind it. Too bad they couldn't find a place for it.

  • this song is what every boy/man who loves his mother thinks.

  • To you ma!!!

  • EVEN 2 DISLIKES!!!!! THEY SHOULD BE RUN OVER BY A MAGIC CARPET!

  • @Warmsprite1w It could be quite obvious that they have a bad relationship with their own mothers.

  • Love ths song. I have it on the dvd, but it's just so wonderful

  • Would If make Disney happy If I put it in my Lego Aladdin?

  • i wonder how the movie would be if aladdin's mom were alive?

  • i can find a way to use this in the movie. instead of the One Jump Ahead reprise, you have Aladdin talking to Abu about how he's not what his mother had hoped for him, then he pulls out the ring and sings this song to the memory of his mom while looking at the ring and the sky. and to end the film, he gives the ring to Jasmine.

  • @GoddessOfWhim2003 That would have tears me up so much, you cannot even know. Probably even too sad for kids to have to put themself in the situation to have no mother, to be like him. I still think it's a good idea though.

  • @GoddessOfWhim2003 That wouldve been perfect! But i still love the film nonetheless

  • @Luffyrulz09

the film's brilliant, one of my faves. kinda pissed it's not getting a Diamond edition, but yeah that's how i would have saved this song.

  • This is a great song! It is a shame it wasn't in the movie! Ashman is the greatest lyricist who ever lived! May he rest in peace!

  • I remember crying to this.

Reminds me of Mother 3 when Lucas lost HIS mother...

  • The Disney movies that people remember the most are the ones that Howard has had his hand in: Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. A testament to the timelessness and genius of his songs. Disney has never been the same since he has passed away.

  • I think they should have kept this song and that Aladdin had a mother. Because then he'd be more sympathetic than as an orphan who by luck got a magic lamp. That's how I feel about it.

Beautiful song. Shame it was cut

  • @MahouNekoShady And not only that, it'd give him more of a drive of what he wanted. Aladdin still could have been rough around the edges but he's trying to help his mother who does as much as she can for him and make ends meet, working hard just to feed him, herself and his monkey.

On a funny note, i'm surprise she let him keep a pet monkey. Instead of selling her ring, they could have sold Abu xD

  • The two people who pressed the dislike button were Jafar and Iago.

  • They're putting this into the stage musical!

  • I always want my parents to be proud of me, so I can definitely relate to this beautiful song. <3

    R.I.P Howard Ashman

  • RIP Howard Ashman. You were a bloody genius.

  • Man I really wished they kept that mother aspect of the film.

  • @FriendlyOutcast300 I agree. I wish they animated that part and made it an extra just like how they made "Human Again" an extra scene in Beauty and the Beast in the dvd.

  • I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DIDN'T USE THIS SONG! It is so beautiful.

  • Howard Ashman will always be the best songwriter, I love this song like I know how it feels wanting your parents or people to be proud of you and it reminds me of one of my friends. But it's such a beautiful and sad song, they should have kept it.

  • For us, be the proud of our parents is the only thing that we want. This song touch our heart on deep form like all songs of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, two great genies!

    Congratulations!

  • the song wants to make me cry it sooo sad

  • Awwwww man I would love to hear brad Kane sing this

  • Comment removed

  • I listened to both versions: Menken's and Aiken's. Aiken's lacks the believeability and sad wistfulness, and tries to be too theatrical. The song is Aladdin's realization of the shame that he is to his poor mother. So, he returns the ring (her wedding ring, perhaps) she gave him to sell, and sets off on his own. Menken took care to demonstrate the regret Aladdin felt, whereas Aiken appeared to ignore the context altogether.

  • omg, the song is so magical

  • you can really hear the emotion alan puts behind his words. i love his voice, the words, everything about this song.

  • @effjaee oh, alan. i meant howard.

  • What a heart wrenchingly beautiful song. And the heart wrenching loss of Howard Ashman during the production must've been hard... :( May he rest in peace. We certainly still miss him after 19 years...

  • I wish they had somehow been able to keep this song in the movie. I really like Aladdin the way it is, but I honestly think this song is better than any of the ones in the movie.

  • this song makes me cry everytime, i guess because I relate alot to the song.

  • ugh i would die to hear brad kane sing this song

although alan does an excellent job singing this song and it sounds pure

  • @ShakespeareHamlet "Too bad Howard was gay"? What on earth is that supposed to mean?

Anyway this is a great song, I wish they hadn't cut it. Even without the mother character in the movie, Aladdin must have had a mother at one time. He still could've sang a song to the idea of her; she didn't have to physically be there.

  • This is more than a song, especially to the people who knew Howard Ashman. I feel so sad, cause this was like his dying wish. He was an amazing man, and we are all proud of him.

R.I.P Howard, your music and stories will live on in the hearts of thousands of people. In the words of Hans Christian Anderson, "Fairytales will make you immortal."

  • When the dvd came out and I first heard this song when I was only eleven or so...

I sang this to my mom.

And she told me I was annoying and to stay out of her way.

Parents really need to understand what a few little words can do to a kid

for the rest of their life.

  • Sometimes they don't. Thats when it hurts most. But we must not dwell on such painful, small, things. They make lines on our faces that take too long to get out.

  • this song is the only time i`v ever seen aladdin`s mother and she looks nothing like what i thought

  • i am trying to sing this song for my voice recital and i love this song now i feel this relates me to my grandpa because my grandma told me that he was so proud of me for writing my children books series and i never knew he was proud of me

  • That is so sad!

  • That was a beautiful song, and I would've loved for it to have been used as a flashback. However, some local theatres who do put Aladdin on as a play use this song, which is good. It would've been cool had it been in the movie, though. I wonder if Howard Ashman's relationship with his mother was really conflicted, which is what led to him writing this song. I hope that Ashman's mother was proud of her son and his accomplishments.

  • Imagine Brad Kane sang this.

  • AWESOME. THANK YOU. The full version! =D

  • Thats because it is better. It's a pity that Disney chose to allow people like Aiken and Ashley Tisdale to cover Howard's compositions.

It's almost like the old saying "Nobody can sing Dylan like Dylan". Obviously the singers/actors that Menken and Ashman chose to interpret their works at the time are one thing - Having people like Tisdale and Aiken cover these songs twenty years after the fact is another thing all together.

  • I like this better then Clay Aiken's version.

  • of course, the original is usually much better than a crappy remake. THIS version is the best.

  • Damn, now I'm crying.

    That was beautiful.

  • I recorded myself doing this song and I'd love to hear some constructive criticism, good or bad!? If you're interested, please check my profile. I really appreciate it!

    =D

  • I wish they kept this song in the movie when i first heard this i almost cried because this speaks to me because i always hoped my parents were proud of me

  • Dear heavens, this is freaking gorgeous.

  • I agree with fahmad27. They could have included this song as a flash back. If they had done that, I'm telling you there would not have been a dry eye in the house. Its kind of funny, but it wasn't until the end of the song that I started to cry. Howard is a gem that will always be missed.

  • TT-TT Even though i never even met him, I cried so hard when i heard that Howard Ashman had passed. I saw on the special edition of Beauty and the Beast that they had added "In loving memory of Howard Ashman, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul." That really cliched it for me, and i just broke down in tears. After all, a HUGE chunk of the reason those movies were so good was because of Howard.

  • ;_;

  • some parts of the song remind me of "Santa Fe" from Newsies

  • Call me crazy, but I prefer Alan's singing to every other incarnation. He sings things straight and pure.

  • I wish they include this song in the movie! If the mother had to be written out of the movie, they could have had Aladdin thinking back to the times when he screwed things up and his Mom was always angry at him. Now that she is dead, he thinks of her and plans to make her proud of him.

  • I totally agree and I think it would have fitted really well in the movie like that!

I really, really wish they hadn't cut it and not just because it is such a beautiful song, or that it meant so much to Howard and Alan, but also because it would've been one more song for Brad Kane to sing, with his beautiful voice!

  • who's that guy at 3:20?

  • i think it's Jafar in the old man disguise

  • Jafar, in his cosutme. You can see Iago on his shoulder.

  • I actually much prefer the way that this one is sung.

He seems to put more emotion into it. (:

  • I had read little bit about Alan Menken and Howard Ashman in the book Disney Wars. This was a very sad clip. Where did you get it?

  • The 2-disk DVD

  • At 1:10, it is so sad to see how they got rid of these things. Howard died from cancer and I bet this movie could've been like Little Mermaid with the parent and child relationship and how they worked thingso ut in the end.

  • I wish I could see this in the context it was meant to be seen, as a part of the original film. It's a shame such a clearly emotional and important song had to be cut.

  • totally agree.

  • This brings me to tears. It so sad but beautiful!

  • This song always makes me think about Howard Ashman and tear up.

  • this song is so beautiful i can totally relate to this song but im a girl!!!

  • Very "Santa Fe"-ish.

  • lol, i love Santa Fe. this song about had me in tears when i heard this version on the DVD. it's so beautifully done.

  • I hear ya. It gets me every time.

  • that is so sad

  • I love the intro of the song... Very fragile and senseer :D

  • This song is a personal favorite of mine.. I like this better than when Clay sings it...

I always cry at this... So storng and beautiful

  • This song means the world to me. I had first got the Aladdin DVD back in 2005. I always thought I was a screw up in high school and college and this made me cry. A lot. Everything I felt was being put into words perfectly. I just wanted my mom to be proud of me and turned a whole new leaf.

Sadly, 2 months later I had to move back home from college because my mom got sick. After 13 months, she died. And now this song is even MORE powerful.

I cannot hear this song and not cry...

  • I'm very sorry for your loss. Know that she's looking on from Heaven and she'll always be in your heart; as long as you believe that, your mother is not dead. you will see her again in Heaven.

  • Thank you so much for the kind words, it means a lot.

I'm so glad we can all share this song together.

  • you're so welcome, HurleyPezcore. I know what it's like to lose a loved one. it's sad, but we've gotta keep on living.

  • she's proud of you don't worry, she's proud......

  • @HurleyPezcore

i'm sorry to hear that. this song affect me in the same way and i cried the first time i heard it too.

  • @HurleyPezcore *offers you a hug, not knowing what else to do.*

  • R.I.P. Howard Ashman. I love this song so much.

  • This song hits close to home with me too. My brother (24 now) has had a rough time growing up, but he played this song for my Mom right before he left for Army boot camp. He has truly made my mother very proud. So, at least he had a happy alliance witht his song.

  • hearing that howard ashman died wrecked my heart...as a kid and still now i love the disney soundtracks

  • God, I hope they put this song into the movie if they re-release it like they did with "Human Again" for the Beauty and the Beast DVD. This is my favorite song from Aladdin

  • No I Don't Think So Cause This Was From The Alternate Version Of Aladdin And Wouldn't Work If They Had His Mother Threw Out The Movie. But Howard Ashman Would Have Been Happy To See This In The Film Even He Was Sad That It Had To Go Even Through This Was His Favorite.

  • its a realy beauty song!

    i love it (l)

  • I love this song! I wish they at least could have it in the credits or something. :o

  • One of the most powerful songs from Disney. I love it.

  • I never even knew this song existed up until a few days ago! I've been listening to it over and over again since then, and even though it wasn't in the original movie, I can't help but feel its cemented itself in my brain as part of the movie anyway. Its simply perfect. How sad it is that it couldn't be realized fully.

  • You know, even without his mom, this song still works for Aladdin. When I heard it the first time, I thought he was singing it to his mother's memory... and it's such a great song that it still works that way, too. ^^ I'm sort of sad they took it out, but that's why they have stuff like this.

  • I love this song I hate that howard died in production of this movie that brings a tear to my eye

  • This song it's the best of Aladdin. (:

It makes me cry! :'( I love it! <3

  • I LOVE this song!

Never fails to make me cry. I think *every1* feels like this once in a while. Does any 1 agree?

  • Oke i must thingking this song is really

    painly

    from me

    whant my mom is dead

en this music .. is to me proud of your boy .. . omg sorry ..

  • I think i am going crazy... Does his mother die? =O

  • Nope, she was all throughout the early story. One of the deleted scenes on the DVD I have is her telling him, while he is pretending to be Prince Ali, that she was ashamed of him.

I think his dad died near the beginning, and he's apologizing to his mom for being a bad kid.

  • His dad isn't dead, he's the king of thieves, I saw it when I was younger =)

  • Oh yeah... I forgot! He didn't die at the beginning, he just left. It's been a while since I saw King of Thieves.

  • I guess they took her out entirely eventually, because they wrote in the lyric "I'd blame parents, except he hasn't got 'em".

  • @Harikou Can you upload that scene please, along with the rest of the deleted scenes with his mother. I'd love to see how much story development she actually got before being removed.

  • I guess they had to cut the mom and that song for time reasons; general story line editing. Its sad, but true.

  • this is such a beautiful song. no one can sing it more emotionally and beautifully as alan menken

  • Wow, that was beautiful. I had no idea it even existed until now.

  • They should have included this song in one of the later movies maybe King of Thieves because that's one of the only times they mention his mother.

  • This song makes me cry, as I can see my realationship with my mother in it. I think Alan Menken gives it more atmosphere than Clay Aiken.

  • this song always makes me cry...

  • I got emotional just watching that let alone listening to it.

  • ALan menken'c voice rocks!

  • I love this song! And the scenes shown in the storyboard are very touching, Alan Menken sings it beautifully; the scenes are also greatly atmospheric.

I wish they would have still fully animated it for the DVD release. I just would have loved to experience the finish product.

  • It's a shame they deleted this wonderful song!

    *sniff*

...By any chance do you have the deleted scene "Count on Me" from Aladdin (it's also on the DVD). Thank you!

  • Beautiful! This song is so touching, it's a shame it had to go because of plot changes. I honestly think this is one of the most beautiful disney songs ever! Thanks for posting

  • I prefer alan memkens voice over Clay Aikens. thanks!

  • Alan Menken is such a good songwriter/composer!! (lil' envy towards him :D )

  • aw heck *sniff* faved and 5*ed. thanks for the upload

  • Although this song was removed from the movie, I have to say that this is my favorite Disney song. IT ROCKS!

  • I thinks this version is really better than the Clay's one, but Clay's is good too

  • i love this version of the song. Clay Aikens version sucks compared to this one
