  • one of Stalin's typical 'useful idiots', ad a very cheesy singer. Rubbish.

  • @monicajporter Stalin was long dead by the time Dean Reed became a leftist. And Dean Reed basically supported the USSR and GDR. That doesn't qualify him as a "useful idiot" even in conservative terminology, it qualifies him as a pro-soviet communist.

  • he was great because after so many years he died people still remember him and admire dean reed..

  • he was so happy..he was murdered ..it was not suicide.

  • Gee, I can't imagine why anyone would want to defect from this shit hole with such great entertainment.

  • The guy reminds me uncannily of Pat Boone in the way he sang and carried himself--and in the intensity (if not color) of his political views.

  • All the great on this Earth is seen from a distance. Now, after 20 years it is clear for me that the Reed was a great singer. And more - he was a one of the best and honest men of that times. It is enough for me personally to remember him forever. Thank you Dean for your being.

  • it could be david johanssen too!!!!

yeah ussr have their 80,s spirit too even communism hell's times

  • my music teacher made my class sing this song well not the whole song

  • I have known this song for more than 20 years, due to Usha Uthup, an Indian singer, who used to start all her life programs with this song.

  • hahaha. Dangerously Cheesy!

  • In 1985, the American political satirist Mark Russell did a show about tv programs from the USSR, showing things never before seen of U.S. tv. The beginning of this song/video was one of the things shown, and Russell had to explain to the American viewers just who this guy was. It's the only time I've ever heard his name until seeing this now.

  • lol, "if we don't talk about defectors, they aren't there!"

    Ever heard of Joe Dresnok?

  • How about Larry A. Abshier? Jerry W. Parris? Robert Jenkins? James Veneris?

Yep, there were a handful that crossed the line into the "workers paradise". They had their reasons... Lord knows if I'll ever understand them.

  • Indeed; there were quite a few.

I can completely sympathize with wanting to find a better place. And at least for them, they found it. Defection took them from obscurity to fame.
