@MrPrazil It depends on the plants you choose. Many types of plants prefer logs or rocks to make their home on, and they get most of their nutrients from the water column as a result. However most water plants, just like dry land plants, gain most of their nutrients from the roots. This means that you have to have a nutrient rich substrate for them to survive. Most plants also don't like floating around the tank, so they must be planted into a substrate of some kind to hold them down.
Love the video, can't get the music out of my head. What is it? Also, I've never seen emerald rainbows in person. Where did you get them? I've got Boesemani , turquoise, and Madagascar, all housed with golden dojo and various botia loaches. The emeralds would fit right in.
@auntmarge6 The music is called Boadicea by Enya. I actually found the Emeralds at our local fish store, Sherman Tank... but he went out of business in January. Try speaking with your LFS to see if they can order them for you, the next time they order fish. :)
@mindlessdreaming Thanks for the info. I was able to find the Emeralds at an online fish store in Lancaster, PA and they shipped me 3. Even new to the tank they have colored up some, although they're still young so I don't expect much for a while. The took right to the front of the tank with all the other rainbows, although they got inordinate interest from my huge turquoise rainbow, who immediately got his orange mating stripe along his spine. Should be interesting. I'd love babies!
I'm assuming you are asking which fish are at 1:40? At that time I see several Madagascar Rainbows, A couple of Emerald Rainbows, a Salmon Red Rainbow, a Red Mosaic Discus, and some Furcata Rainbows.... and there might be a threadfin rainbow on the left side there.
That would be a discus. He was still very very small, and he was actually a very nice orange color with dark black stripes. I'm actually not sure of his exact species, but since almost all discus are inbred to get those fabulous colors, he could be anything.
They get VERY large (8-10 inches), and should not ever be kept in a tank smaller than 90 gallons. They also have a secretion on their skin that other fish will sometimes find tasty, so they shouldn't ever be with "nippers".
nice tank although, madagascar rainbows break the rules in that they prefer acidic water rather than alkaline like all other rainbows and the tank is defenetly overstocked you should eventually move some for better space.
First off this tank has a Hagen FX5 Filter setup as a fluid bed filter. Under gravel filter with 2x power heads and an air pod 100. There is even UV on it from time to time. What do you believe is sufficient?
I think your both liars, HAH. I had to run across this video on random, don't even tell me you have a video of your tank up, not like I need to watch it or anything. I'm breaking up with both of you now
What kind of under gravel filter do you have?

and get an all black background. A black background brings out the colour in your fish and you also don't want to see all the cords and what not.

90 gallons is a good size for Discus, but having that many Rainbow Fish with a Discus will stress out the Discus.

Looks shit needs some backing to hide all the tubes/uplifts

I'm in love with those forktails,

Remove that Discus. You are not supposed to keep Discus with Rainbow Fish. Rainbows stress them out because they swim a lot. Bad mix there.

Your tank might become very crouded once those Madagascar's reach full size. They can get up to 6 inches in length.
BigFatCheese100 2 years ago
Madagascar rainbows do not prefer acidic water. They prefer neutral.
