They are great filters. I have three of the 50100 which are rated for 150 square feet vs 374 for the large one. I put one in the bedroom, one in my work room and one in the living room. Mine has a similar type noise (air rushing) but its not too offensive. On low, its good background noise to sleep with just like you mentioned.
To the people that complain about noise....listen you have to move air for a filter to work. A quiet filter means its not moving air. Simple.
So I bought one in an emergency: we found out our building manager lied to us and that our apartment was covered in asbestos. We cant move for another week - however, it removed about 50% of the dust - so I bought 3 of them and run them 24/7... there is no dust. The machines are AMAZING - but it does sounds like we are in an airport with 4 running at the same time... then again, id rather avoid asbestos.
@EgoNamahaNemoRex Do you use the flash light to check the dust in air? I currently using one at high settings and it seems your right about 50% dust being remove. What settings you have it on 3 of them when you had no dust? Electric here is kind of expensive per month.
@panzerchaos47 maximum. They were all on maximum the entire time... Though, if you're in a situation like I was in, you want smaller particulate retention than regular HEPA. IQ Air has some that filter 0.01 microns instead of just 0.03 (or 1 microns vs 3, whatever it is). Aside from something really dangerous like asbestos, I don't know that the difference is relevant, though.
mine is an older moldel that the one shown. No blue light. the first minute that you turn it on, you will feel the diference in the air, its kind of sweet, so different it will make your life very much better regarding dust, and any particle that make you feel disconfort. the loud that it could be is not a problem, just select hig speed q0 minutes before getting into a room the change it to low and that's it. I will recomend this unit to whoever got allergy problems. It really clean the air. :)
Good review unlike the AirPurifierReview guy and the AliveAir guy who sell a competitor through their own website. NEVER believe reviews done by competitors!
@Kimmersue1 I guess my past will never be too far behind. At any rate, how big a room will this clean? I have a small apartment - maybe just put it in the bedroom? Or would it work ok in the main area in your opinion?
@MrGrevy According the information I have read "the Honeywell 50250 is rated to handle 374 square feet of area, which is 2-3 average sized rooms or one very large room"
@MrGrevy an air filter won't reduce something that is clearly coming from the spirit realm. I suggest that you buy yourself some Sage, and burn it in the rooms like the LR and BR and basement where you feel there may be lingering spirits. Also visualizing bright 'white light' energizing and chasing away any negative spirits would do lots for you. ... Namaste.
@jaworskij I'll give that a try. Thanks for the help. I don't know what kind of sage to use tho...like the plant or can it be from like a seasoning jar? Ironically, I'll probably need to turn off my Honeywell Air Filter so the smoke can have whatever effect it needs to have. Appreciate it!
I LOVE this purifier! i have a cat, and my mother is very allergic, the day I got the purifier, she visited and didnt need to take allergy meds and didnt even use her puffer! its an amazing machine and I recommend to everyone! the air thats blown out is nice and cool (my friends thought it was an air conditioner!) We just moved and sold the unit since the house has central air and purifier and doesnt have carpeting! I recommend this unit to EVERYONE!!
We have the single filter version and power wise, they are the same (at least should be).
Ours pulls:
97 watts on Hi
78 watts on Med
64 watts on Low
Testing done with a Kill-a-Watt tester.
We've had ours for almost a year and still running strong using it's original filter (though I did buy a spare for $20). I keep it cleaned regularly and wash it's prefilter (the black charcoal odor killer) and vacuum or use the air compressor to blow out the main filter.
Thank you for your review! After watching I went out to Home Depot and bought one. I agree It's too loud on turbo to sleep with but I can switch to low for perfect white noise. FYI it's currently $158 at Home Depot!
I own this model and it is great for the price. I have 2 dogs and it really helps. We haven't been sick in 2 yrs. It cuts down significantly on dust too.
Since 1999 no new inventions do better. They get huge # of false testimonials, they hype up claims about performance of their Ionic garbage and they charge a big price as if it really does work. They constantly use the internet to put false testimonials against competitor brands and hype up their own garbage for sale. The word purifier is ambiguous. Thus you need a hepa filter and it does ALL the purifying you want. It may take more electricity but it does much much more work. IT was proven
I ordered one and received it today... I have since ordered 2 more for the rest of the house... I have severe allergies and asthma.... It has been running all day and I can tell a difference. I don't care if it sounds like a jet... I would rather be able to breathe.. and I sleep with a fan or used too.. but this replaced that so the noise is a good thing.
I just bought this air purifier 50250 a week ago and so far so good, after I did some research I found out the Honeywell 50250 is one of top rated air purifiers overall, it has the permanent life time HEPA filter. Cons: its kind of loud on its highest setting because is moving a whole lot of air through its vents efficiently (unlike other air cleaners that choose silence over performance) on the med and low settings one is acceptable and the other is just noticeable. Its a great product..
How long have you been using the unit? The black pre-filter that wraps around the hepa filter basically keeps the hepa filter from getting dirty (which is why it may still look white). The pre-filter starts turning gray in color when it is filled with dust. The orange lights sound like your filter lights. They are supposed to come on when your filters need to be changed. Have you been using the prefilter? If not, it may sense that it is not on the unit and may light up for that reason?
I think i may be experiencing the same issue. i brought my HW 250 almost a week ago and have been running it non-stop since. I was surprised to notice when I opened my blinds to let the sunlight in to see several dust particles floating in the air all across my bedroom. I think i'm going to call honeywell to figure this out
i just bought a fenix ultra brite flash light tk10 ...now i can see dust floating around i started to dust with my bird feather bush ...i thought i would watch the dust go in the honey well ..shining the light i could see it was not cleaning the dust ...i just settled on the floor again?
@MrGrevy According the information I have read "the Honeywell 50250 is rated to handle 374 square feet of area, which is 2-3 average sized rooms or one very large room"
I dont find the blue LED distracting/bright whatsoever, I have no idea either why anyone complains about this.
The noise level however I find is too high at the highest setting (sounds like a small jet engine). The medium setting I can deal with if I don't need to watch TV or have any other sound playing. The low setting is fine for everyday/everything use although it is by no mean unnoticeable.
I just received this item today and I was wondering:
Kimmersue and anyone else who bought this unit, when you first opened the box, were the instruction manual and plastic bag on top but the manual wasn't even inside the plastic bag? I couldn't help but feel like I've been sent a used/returned/opened unit...
Furthermore, are the 50250 and 50250-N two different models? I've been led to believe both labels refer to the same exact model.
Hi! Sorry, I don't remember if the instructions were in a plastic bag or not. As for the 50250 vs. 50250-N models, I've read from other posters on the web that supposedly the difference is that the N model has the lifetime hepa filter and the other model does not. However, since my model has no mention of an "N" anywhere on it, and it DOES have the lifetime hepa filter, then this is not the case. I would just make sure that your 50250 model says that it has the lifetime hepa filter.
DejawoostA. The 50250 is the first model, the 50250-N is exactly the same except the HEPA filter is lifetime (regeneratable). The 50250-N is more of an internal code for the manufacturer, so you won't see it in the box. If your box and your manual states it is a lifetime HEPA filter, then it is.
The sound of the Honeywell Air Purifier sounds like an air fan inside a BOEING airplane when you turn it on, but only a little louder if you set it on medium setting. I still find it to be too loud because I have sensitive ears.
Thanks for the video. I was planning on buying this (allergic to dust and pollens) but had concerns about the noise and light after reading other people's reviews. Now I know it's not really that bad!
I bought a newer version of this Honeywell model from Costco, and all 3 levels are quite loud. I opted to return it for one of the Blueair air purifiers, and it is AMAZINGLY quiet.
Hi your Model 50250 has the old permament HEPA filter (red & black box). Can you replace it with advanced filter? It says LIFETIME HEPA filter printed on the box ex Honeywell Lifetime HEPA Filter $ 18.99
Thanks for taking the time to post this. Having seen it, I do think that it would be too loud for me on all but the quiet setting. Even on the quiet setting, it might be ok while sleeping, but during the day while I'm working, on the phone, or watching TV or listening to the radio, that would drive me nuts.
Thanks for the input! My boyfriend is allergic to my cat, & I think this will help. Even if it's a placebo effect for him, that's fine by me! Clean air would be great either way. I just bought one on Amazon... I can't wait for it to come next week! Maybe he'll come over to my apartment more often now.... :)
Do you think this will help with pet allergies - specifically cats? I know people claim it helps with their allergies, but it seems that most of these allergies are related to dust.
Well, I am allergic to dust, cats, and dogs and it seems to help me a lot. We have a dog and cat (as well as some dust!), and I don't know which of those things it helps the most, but I just know overall that I can finally breathe through my nose a lot better and am not as congested when using the purifier. I was a skeptic of these air purifiers overall prior to finally getting one. I thought that they were more of a placebo effect type thing for most people. But I'm a "believer" now!
The thing is loud, but I need it at night. The sound is white-noise which is perfect for sleeping on the high setting. I usually turn it down to medium when in the room, but if I want it completely quiet, I turn it off when I'm there and on high when I'm not. The low setting isn't good because it has an uneven-sounding warble since these fans are not always perfectly balanced. Otherwise, great white-noise on medium and high. If yours ever starts to make noise, remove and vacuum the carbon filter
I actually run the unit in my bedroom for an hour or two before bedtime on medium power and then leave it on low while I'm sleeping. I am one who wakes up at the slightest variation in noise or sound (which is why I can't fall asleep with a radio on), and this unit is very consistent to me on the low setting.
Hey, Kimmersue1. I've owned one of these for what's coming up on 3 years soon. It's actually starting to have issues with the filter (never needed to replace the HEPA) and it's showing some wear. Yet, I've loved it! I just ordered a second today with the permanent HEPA filter (50250N model) to replace my aging one. Yes, the light is a little bright, but no worse than any other electronics I use. If it's bad for some, they can put some tape over it (or add a resistor to the LED). Continued...
Yes, I have the one with the permanent filter. I haven't had to vacuum it as of yet. The blue light does not bother me as I keep the unit on the floor in my bedroom and face it away from my bed, so I can't even see it.
Thank you for uploading this imformative video clip. You are helping a lot of people with allergies. I've read your review on Amazon. I think I'm going to purchase this machine this week.
Yes, it will reduce cigarette smoke particle and dust. In fact, any HPEA purifier has a three CADR ratings. They are removal ratings in smoke, pollen and dust. This machine has a 250 CADR rating in all three. Thus, your room will smell better. Will it reduce the risk of smoking? No.
Thank Kimmer. I read your review on Amazon. I am a fellow reviewer, Richard Wong. You may have read my review. Anyway, I have been telling people to buy it from a real store so that they can return it, but this youtube video is great. This provides potential buyer a realistic description of the noise level. The noise in the video is slightly louder than my unit. I guess the wind blowing the microphone may have made it sound louder. I need to modify my review to update your video.
Thanks! Since I was unsure of the noise level, I did like you said with this unit regarding buying it locally (at a home depot) in case I needed to return it without any hassle. And yes, the unit probably sounds even louder on the video than it really is. I did have a couple of moments where the microphone got knocked which may have made it seem louder for a sec.
Thanks so much for this review!! Honestly I can understand how the light could be bothersome, and the noise on low does seem fairly loud. Again, this video shows these issues perfectly, however for those in the know this is the best value air purifier on the market. I will be ordering one or more very soon. Thanks again for the great review!
Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad this helped at least one person out there! The noise and light were the only two issues that I was concerned about, so I figured other people might be interested too. Thanks again!

I smoke cigars and have a lot of dust , will it help?
camcameron71 3 years ago

Oh no! I tried to click on the thumb to give you a thumbs up, and I must have clicked on the wrong one! Does anyone know who to change it? Sorry!

Ha ha ha. This is no big deal. Don't worry about it.
