Funny you mentioned that. My 95 BMW 525 and 93 Merc 400E have no cup holders. Of course, the Merc can do over 150 mph so you don't want to distracted ;)
Saab is weird... in their early 90s, cars from Saab didn't even have a cup holder. My first -92 Saab 9000 certainly did not. Then in -93 they came up with the great idea of putting one in the armrest between the driver and passenger seat resulting in you tipping whatever you have over when gear shifting. It was first in the 9-5 in -98 they finally did something good about it... and this 2008 Saab 9-3 is genious and funny ^^
Not really weird, just most europeans didn't drink and drive much...they didn't live in the car. Different now of course.
I remember my old 80's saab 900 just had 2 indentations in the glovebox lid for cups, great! ;-)

It unfolds to the passenger's side so that the driver can still operate the climate control. Got one, too. ;-)
