Whats sad about IG's stuff is he claims to have went to film school yet his stuff is about as boring and medicore as it gets. Hes, at best, a poor man's AVGN.
I think a lot of these guys actually try too hard. They are reviewers and generally come off as though they are forcing the issue, especially when it comes to the comedy bits. AVGN's stuff, though rarely genuinly funny, isn't bad and is entertaining enough. Irate Gamer on the other hand always feels forced like he feels he has to be funny in his reviews because the actual content can't stand on its own. I dunno though. I find HVGN superior to both because it never feels forced.
One thing we know about AVGN is he has horrid taste in beer. Rolling Rock sucks and to exclusively drink that piss water seems ridiculous. He's probably always in such a shitty mood because he's always drinking that shitty brew.
I think the nerd should go back to a smaller scale for his reviews like he used to (about 2009 style I think was best) and I think he might actually do that. Not for the reason of going back to his roots so that he can let go of the high production value weight but more because the movie is gonna take so much from him so that it would be too much work to do his giant movie style stuff.
I more over like the reviews. I more like to watch IGs history of VG now and watch everything else of AVGN's. I really do like AVGN BECAUSE he puts emotion into it.

I discovered AVGN through IG's comment wars. I can tell where you're coming from. AVGN seems to treat it like a hobby and IG treats it more like a sidejob. While I do enjoy the AVGN's videos, alot of his fans really annoy me, because they seem to think that he has the final word on everything he reviews, and they also seem to think that anyone who doesn't agree with him should be punished for all eternity. That's just not right. Hey, even I don't agree with him on everything he says.
Also, I think I might like your review, mainly because it's not as negative and abrasive as Asalieri's review on him would be. You actually state something that is positive about him, as well as any flaws he has, not just outright bash, bash, bash like BusyStreet does.

I mean, when you think about how long he does his videos, and than include the fact that he's - at least to my knowledge - the only internet reviewer who does his work for that long, it's no wonder that he evolved. I find it's very often that I agree with you. We seem to have very similar tastes in video reviews. I can only think of one of your Critiquing the Critics where I strongly disagreed. Your insight is really good and you emphasize your points extremely well. More people should watch you.

"Forced" is the best word to discribe his newer videos. I still enjoy them, but it seem that he's losing it. Maybe he's working on the movie too hard, so he doesn't put as much thoughts as he did before. I don't know.
All the negative points you've had can be traced back to James being a director first; the AVGN is just a side thing. It didn't surprise me at all that the videos went in the direction they did... it was only a matter of time, really. Even though I still enjoy the AVGN, I wish James could give it up and concentrate on his movies. Some of them are actually pretty good.
Uh you can't just call the AVGN a side thing. The Nerd videos are what allows him to actually not need another job then just doing reviews on the internet. And the reason he isn't doing as many nerd videos now is because he's busy on his big directorial project: the AVGN MOVIE! So yeah I'd still say that it isn't a side thing and is going to be at least for several more years what people will always know him as.

I guess "side thing" isn't the right way to put it, but it's obvious that he would much rather spend more time on other projects. The reason why he started producing less Nerd videos (before the current hiatus) was becasue of burnout. He's done everything he wanted to do with the character.
I still love AVGN. And his new ones, but does anyone else feel like in his newer videos he seems like he is "trying" to be the nerd rather than being the nerd naturally like his older videos?
I think James gets a pass on being "another Caustic Critic" as he is probably the pioneer of the subject. 85% of all modern internet video reviewers started off as either a fan of the Nerd, a fan of the Nostalgia Critic or both.
@Davethe3rd I actually intend on making a new red flag in the next video that will be called something along the lines of "Pioner of the outdated". However, I personally agree. I dont hold it against him. Red Flags are just things that might bug people.
