@DaL33T5 Are you sure it wasn't just a Nintoaster? They made an actual toaster-shaped console and everything for NES games. It was an official console.
@DaL33T5 Ah, I didn't realize the Nintoaster was modified to do it from a normal toaster. A google search cleared that up. I thought it was an official console when I saw it on Angry Video Game Nerd, but now I'm informed! Consider me less ignorant than I was 10 minutes ago.
Also consider me less ignorant now, because I actually thought "wait, there's actually a Nintendo-licensed Nintoaster?". Though I will admit that when I saw AVGN's Nintoaster, I thought it was official too.
The electric motor that's used to move the cutter makes a sound when it runs. The pitch of the sound is proportional to the speed by which the motor runs. By alternating the speed a melody is evolving.
@BlackStarevolution : Warum bist Du Dir da so sicher?
Why is this song, tetris theme and imperial march the most popular songs played on 'unusual' instruments? Would be refreshing to hear something else - I mean, there are so many classic 8-bit songs to choose from. But no, it always has to be super mario, imperial march or tetris theme. Sheesh. And the masses will always cheer, especially if it's super mario (I guess I just realized the answer to my question).. oh, the devolution of the human species.
@Evilektr0nyka Actually, it's not. Anything with a stepper motor and the right programming of the controller can do something like this. Some devices may require more hacking than others.
@xxxslayerxxx666 It might not be clear from the video, but a laser cutter can move in two directions - X and Y. Each has its own stepper motor / servo motor or whatever, so each axis can run at a different speed, making an unique sound. So with X any Y, you can generate two different sounds at the same time - and at no point in the video i can make out more than two notes played at the same time.
Btw: a CNC mill or 3D printer adds Z axis, so it can play three notes simultaneously!
@Gameboi834 A stepper motor usually has around 200 steps per revolution, each times it moves by one step, it makes a small "donk" sound. If it rotates fast enough, those "donks" turn into one continuous tone. If you vary the speed, the pitch changes as well.
No, it's why you pay tens of thousands of dollars to get them to make stuff with this equipment for you....right after they finish making bad ass videos of course....XD
Props to the fellow that thought, "Hmmm, I can make a tune out of the sounds coming from this machine." and props to whomever thought, "Hey lets do Mario Brothers theme." Lots of win in this vid.
