  • did this game actualy exist?the graaphics are amazing for a 32 bit system!

  • @Sargeantsledgehamer No and yes. Shenmue was supposed to come out for the Saturn but it was later decided to be released on the Dreamcast.

  • As much as the Dreamcast game is possibly the best graphic engine they could do at the time (99/2000) with a pretty powerful hardware, it would've been a DREAM having this game on Saturn.

    It looks amazing.

  • @GonoManiax Also, I've read a Yu Suzuki (and another AM2 game programmer) interview, they did this Shenmue Saturn version in less than 8 months! Dunno how long would've taken to program the whole game, but bearing in mind the known programming issues and hardware limitations of the Saturn, it's still impressive.

  • How is that possible? :)

  • i now respect the Saturn even more.., just wow..

  • I can't believe how cinematic that looks. The attention to detail and animation is astonishing for a 32-bit console. Would have loved to play that on the Saturn (my favourite console ever).

  • The detail on the character models are quite stunning for the time. It seems to be as detailed as the ones made by R* in GTA III and its sequels.

  • @blakegriplingph No where near GTA 3.

  • @jacksprat1990 - Well, maybe, but if you take a peek at the facial textures in this video and in GTA3, they seem to be of similar resolution.

  • @jacksprat1990

The character models - yes - they are very comparable.

Environment is obviously no contest, but GTA III isn't remotely pretty.

  • Looks like a DS game lol. Understandable though. This was shown around...what? 1995?

  • Shows why it cost so much to make. But looks amazing on saturn, would have been best on the system!

  • If VF2 on the Saturn was just about 60% of what he Saturn could do, Im sure it could have pulled off model 2 quality games to the fullet and maybe not model 3 but at least not too much far from

  • This was the beginnning stages of the game, and alot of dreamcast's heyday really was supposed to be Sega Saturn's future, Im mean could you think Sonic Adventure, VF3 , shemue for the Saturn was really supposed to happen, with that you know programmers were go to push the Saturn to the fullest, letting the N64 and Playstation really know who is champ.

  • For its time these are good. But the Dreamcast version was worth the wait for better graphics and better gameplay

  • if only the saturn was easy to program and sega had supported it for a bit longer , maybe i say , maybe we would have this game .

i drooling all over my keyboard has i'm typing this comment xD

    it looks for awesome .

  • @burzumaske20 because it sure helped the dreamcast!

  • I have to say, for a Sega Saturn, this looks amazing. But I have to agree with the comment below, it looked even better on Dreamcast. There are games put out even now (though admittedly not many) that don't look as good as Shenmue did on a damn Dreamcast 10 years ago. So ahead of its time and what a great game

  • As amazing as this looks, I'm much happier it came to the Dreamcast instead.

And I really hope Shenmue 3 comes!

  • am2, fighters megamix was fuuuuun!!!

  • Shenmue I+II remake and Part III for PlayStation Vita. Come on SEGA!

  • How come Sega never released this awesome gem of a game?Personally i questioned the console's hardware capabilities based on the lack of real time shadows, poor colors and light source shading found n many of it's games.

  • @Pimpczar2011 It was.

    On the Dreamcast.

  • If this would have came out on Saturn when the PS1 was coming out, I think Shenmue would have sold more copies then Final Fantasy 7, just because of how great this looks. I mean...this is a Saturn game...fucking SEGA SATURN and it looks pretty damn good.

  • Sega Saturn was a BEAST

  • I knew since some years Shenmue was for Saturn at the beginning... But Shenmue 2 story was also already wrote at this time ?!

  • That was some impressive graphics for the Saturn. AM2 must have literally tapped everything from the Saturns CPU and GPU to

  • No wonder Shenmue cost so much, they practically made Shenmue 1 and 2 TWICE! Once on Saturn, and then again on Dreamcast

  • fun fact the Saturn was technically more powerful then the N64, it was just very hard to program great graphics for it, that's why this game is so great, it took massive geniuses to make this, and Shemmue in general.

  • n64 was stronger than saturn. two 32-bit 28 mhz cps with two 2d-based gpus do not match a 64-bit 92 mhz with a dedicated 3d gpu running at 62 mhz. the one thing saturn had over n64 was hardware support for 2d graphics and a cd drive.

  • @nooblet911 I'll give ya that one for sure, im just saying that the Saturn could, if used well, look like the better looking 3d arcade games of the 90's, but not as powerful as the N64, which i don't think of like an arcade console, it was a Nintendo console so obviously its within its own grand category, because Nintendo always goes above and beyond the arcade, im just saying the Saturn's graphics remind me allot of House of the Dead, which is probably less then an N64.

  • @nooblet911

It also had a dedicated sound processor, whereas the N64 handled audio through the GPU and CPU.

  • @nooblet911 The CPU in the N64 being 64-bit is nill, didn't make any difference. And anyway, I always thought PS1, and Saturn games looked better than N64 games (which were horrendously burry, and foggy).

  • the n64 is not only 64-bit, it's also about thrice faster than the ps1 cpu and about twice faster than the saturn cpu. additionally it has a gpu capable of real hadrware 3d accelerated (smooth) graphics. neither 32-bit competing console (ps1 & saturn) can do smooth textures and they both have problems with texture distortion (i.e. warping). the n64 problems like fog are to be attributed to problematic programming while the "blurriness" is because of texture cache limitations.

  • let me put it this way: n64 tech is way better than ps1 and saturn tech, it's just bottlenecked by some things (like no cd drive, limiting texture cache, high latency ram, ect.). if n64 had those things fixed there would be nothing it couldn't do better than the 32-bit consoles like ps1 and saturn.

  • and by the way, I could turn your argument against n64 graphics (namely that they are blurry and foggy) the other side around by saying that ps1 and saturn graphics are horrendously pixelated, warping and have much pop-up.

  • @nooblet911 True, though Saturn games warped less. The N64 had ALOT of stupid hardware limitations that it really shouldn't have had, I swear, nintendo or whoever designed it's hardware had no clue what they were doing. I liked the PS1 and Saturn's graphics becuase of the sharper, more detailed textures, and longer draw distances. N64 games also looked blockier IMO.

  • I wouldn't say they had no clue what they were doing but it was infact a part of their plan to make the console more "elitic" so only a select few could develop for it and get good results on. check out majora's mask and rush 2049 for long draw distances with a lot of detail and kirby 64 for non-blocky graphics.

  • though I admit some things were just stupid (like that texture cache and no dma for the cpu). the cartridge format limited it too of course.

  • damn it homebrewers stop making 3d marios and focus on recovering this and porting srb2 to the saturn!

  • @Supertomiman Dude. This is Shemmue. Not SRB2. Although it would be cool...

  • @sonikku956

lol I know, that is what I meant by "recovering this", I want them both, and now I can't stop daydreaming about it!

  • @Supertomiman SRB2 nothing, I want Sonic Xtreme

  • only Yu Suzuki could do something this great with the Saturn

  • much more better than the playstation 1 .

the animation look a little slow motion , but i bet the final product would be fantastic .

  • if it's realy a real-time animations,

the textures and the animations are AMAZING!

  • I have to do this for my father...

  • wow! that would have been somethin! a whole different experiance

  • Is this pre-rendered or real-time? Either way it's impressive, but, if its the later, then its even more impressive.

  • @Battfro it's real time

  • I am sorry but this blows any Playstation game out the water. Dude, this was like early nextgen for that era.! I realize now that the Sega Saturn IS the 32-bit BEAST! Its just unfortunately that Sega AM2 was the only developer to utilize the Sega Saturn's true capabilities.

  • This actually looks really good. I say it pushes the Saturn more than it does DreamCast.

Its amazing that they have face modeling close to the DreamCast version!

  • this Could of saved the saturn ! had it been completed

  • This intrigues me. LOOKS AMAZING. Someone actually put in the effort and utilized the power of the Saturn's processors!

  • Blows anything else on the Saturn out of the water graphically.

  • @zakkattakk89 This looks better than most games from that generation. Period.

  • SHENMUE 3

    SUPPORT THE SHENMUE 3 CAMPAIGN!!

    See channel...

  • @Shenmue3Now

Yes! That way we'll be able to see Ryo fly into outer space with his methane gas propelled butt rocket!

  • As if to prove that polygon count isn't important, Ryo looks much cooler in this version!

  • Wow the locations are so detailed i never saw anything as good as that on PS1 or N64

  • We can clearly see this port would of been great and I believe kept the Saturn alive much longer.

  • Oh the Nostalgia! I swear, if they don't finish this series before I die, my hungry ghost will haunt Yu Suzuki's ancestors for all eternity!

  • Any fans of Shenmue please join us at the Shenmue500k group. Type it into google and join one of our pages, we want answers from Sega!!!

  • Wow! This game looks better than some Dreamcast games!

  • Calling ALL Shenmue fans , send a defiant message to Sega. There is an E3 expo 2011 facebook page, Sega cannot fail to notice any related comments posted on this page. Also try typing Shenmue500K on Google and see our related pages, arigato. ^^

  • I wish they would do SOMETHING to continue this story...I wanted to kick Lan Di's ass so badly.

  • three packs ,every pack 4 disc...thats i heard in that time....

  • bad marketing and flopped releases like mega cd 32x and stupidly hig priced tags compared to rival consoles killed the consoles not the consoles themselevs oh and Bernie frickin Stolar

  • The saturn was the a PS3 of that generation.

  • This, Sonic Xtreme and Ico (PSX) for presidency!

  • Saturn was a failure but it was far more powerful than the N64 and Ps1.

Had 3 processors in the other hand the Ps1 only had 1

  • Very impressive.

For every single old console, new potential could be found with the knowledge of every passing year, for VERY impressive games that could never be thought possible on their time... with the very same hardware.

  • Gotta love how the cutscenes are using real-time graphics and not CGI videos.

    On a Saturn...

  • 0:53 "ouch".

  • god xuiyng is just as hot with saturn graphics

  • do they still makes games for the saturn in japan

  • @thesuspect1234 No. The Saturn is 16 or so years old. The last japanese game for the Dreamcast was around 2007.

  • Wow. At that time if Shenmue would to be released they would'nt been bankrupt.

And Shenmue 3 would've been out a long time ago. SEGA lost all the money on account of there were more fans of Playstation and the PS2.

  • I wonder how far along this game was before they decided to move it onto the Dreamcast. The coding must still exist somewhere behind locked doors over at Sega. I'd play through it again just to play it on the Saturn. It looks great!

  • @Monacomaverick it was very far as was recently told by yu suzuki in an interview on 1up. also as you can see they keep showing videos until the end of shenmue 2 on dreamcast so they must've done at least the first 4 chapters on saturn.

  • The graphics are awesome. This was going to utilize the Saturns 2nd processor, was it not?

  • @KCwellard

Utilizing the Saturn's second CPU wasn't necessarily uncommon. Utilizing it efficiently is another story, but if anyone could do it, it was Sega's own Yu Suzuki and the AM2 team. Virtua Fighter 2 for the Saturn was a showcase for their expertise, running 60 frames per second in 704x480 resolution. I have no idea how Shenmue would have turned out, considering the nature of a 1 on 1 fighting game vs an expansive adventure game, but what I see here is pretty impressive all the same.

  • The graphics here are better than anything the PlayStation ever showed. And this wasn't even released.

  • @KudouYusaku Not to the general public but there are copies floating around out there.

  • This would have been the thing that made the Saturn popular outside of Japan, but I'm glad it was a Dreamcast game instead.

  • Saturn could never run that game

  • Thank God it came out on the Dreamcast...

  • Its amazing what they were able to get out of the Saturn

  • These effects may look dated now, but when we're talking about late 1990's...this was cutting edge. It takes me back, even now the graphics are not that bad....if you really think about it.

  • @TheShadowParliament I agree. These visuals are absolutely stunning for their time. The game looks playable by today's standards. The quality of the motion capture also deserves special mention.

  • @AlphaGodDamn4

I agree its looks great for Saturn but, "looks playable by today's standards"?? Really, today's standards? Are you nuts? This looks playable by 1997 standards, maybe. Something that looks this bad wouldn't even make it on the DS today.

  • also very impressive is the early video of Ico running on PS1 hardware. Its surprising how well some newer games still ran fluidly on that older hardware- just goes to show you how much the animation fundamentals matter independently of hardware.

  • This video always amazes me - if you notice theres so many scenes that are here from the final game but different completely! Also alot of this is from Shenmue 2 - with Ren etc.....

Always makes me wonder just HOW MUCH they got done on the Saturn - and if anythings left of it........

  • They truly had an amazing graphics engine there.

  • Half of that is Shenmue 2

  • @hoodedkillaray

Yeah, it's speculated that Sega actually started 2 BEFORE 1. Which would explain why it was less interactive.

  • Ren was never is Shenmue 1......

  • Pity coud have been the saturns saviour :(

  • Damn, looks like they'd done a fair bit of work before moving it to the Dreamcast. Too bad Sega got into the habit of creating short lived consoles, otherwise Shenmue on the Saturn could have become a reality, which no doubt would been, as @dittyobrien said, a savior of sort.

  • @dittyobrien

Yeah just like it was the Dreamcast's Savior.....

  • Es increible como un juego con apenas 2 microchuips de 16 mb pegados pudiera desplegar estos gráficos...eso si su desarrollo debio ser empedrado y doloroso

  • These graphics could pass off as a release title for the ps2

  • If Shenmue would have originally released on the Saturn we would have been able to finish it, so sad.....

  • it's kind of funny , sega abandoned the saturn after 2 or 3 years , and now we look at shenmue running on the saturn ... jesus , it makes me wanna play shenmue on my saturn .

  • I bet this game, if it were released, would have been Japanese only. They ruined an epic, and beloved, console in the west. Most of the good games stayed in Japan..

  • this probably would have crashed my saturn

  • This only took them 6 months to program (per 1up's interview with Suzuki). Amazing!

  • wooow it looks better than every blaystation game

  • Wow. Just wow. This would've been the single best-looking game of the 32-bit generation. :O

  • whoa elements from shenmue 2 plaing on the saturn

no wonder they spent so much money shenmue...

they developed it on two systems

  • I think there were issues about Shenmue running on Saturn, aside from the fact that it took an age to get to the stage in this video due to the Saturn being a beast to program for. And just think: it would probably have taken about 4 or 5 CDs and loading would probably have been a major problem.

Also, by the time it went through US/EU localization it would have been far too late to save the Saturn in the west. If Shenmue couldn't save the Dreamcast, what could it do for the Saturn?

  • Damn....what could have been for the Saturn.

  • @napalmman420 I agree. It would have been too late. People wanted a 3D Sonic game. My feeling is that it didn't matter what great titles came out for the Saturn: Until a decent Sonic game was released, Future titles, no matter how great they were, wouldn't be given the reception they deserved. Sega Rally helped a lot, but Daytona did not. Eg. Nights is an amazing game, and it is a game thats loved by many people, but I think it would have done even better if released after a decent Sonic game

  • i mean, this might seem like ass now, but my god seeing this run on saturn hardware is kind of fucking amazing

  • this would have been a cool version to put on the dreamcast also

  • hm.. i did read some places that this is not an RAW sega saturn exactly, but a sega saturn using an cartridge with a external DSP thing that does help the saturn push out more triangles.

Would be interessing if sega did used this cart to port model 3 games to the saturn and etc.

  • @DirtyRodent they probably used a RAM pack for some extra video memory, which was required for a few high-end Saturn games.

  • @Despellanion it was said by the producer that they didnt use the ram pack ;)

this is pure saturn hardware running with no extras! :)

  • This shouldve totally came out on Saturn first!! This game alone wouldnt of completely saved the saturn but this would be a must have for all gamers!

  • did not know the saturn was so powerfull :O

  • I personally think this would have failed on saturn because it was very hard to program on it dreamcast was easy to program it was like smoking weed in a public place and not getting caught

  • it's like a playstation, i never had a saturn...

  • the old memories of sega in the past . much better than the few games it gives now these days. i think somewhere they lost the magic touch

  • The clouds are ridiculously amazing.

  • @strykah92

Im pretty sure it is, since its got more content anyways

  • What's that cave at 2:50?

Oh my god, that looks just plain AWESOME! I hope this beta will leak one day so we all can enjoy it.

  • Anyone who is interested in a SHENMUE 3 please join this fan campaign facebook group i helped make, thanks. SHENMUE 3 !!! TARGET 500,000 + MEMBERS. ALL FANS NEEDED! (copy and paste the group name and it should come up) Everyone welcome to join, arigato.

  • i wonder how many discs it would take

  • @poncho828 probably 4 sense the DC used 3 disks and it had only a little more storage than a regular cd

  • Probably for the best that this version was canned. The Dreamcast's hardware much better suits the games epic scope. Not to mention it probably saved a lot programmers the frustration of programming anything 3D on the Saturn. Still impressive what they were able to accomplish though.

  • Holy! Did anyone even notice the music on the background? While the graphics are stunning, the music is perhaps even more impressive. I wonder if there is a high quality version available as it sounds incredibly epic!

  • why does sega has to screw everything up .

i'm not saying sega suck's , but look at this , it's fuckin' amazing , it makes me want to play it on my sega saturn .

  • I doubt they would have had all the voice acting for it as it was on the DC. What about the kitten? And QTE's? Collecting toy capsules and Genesis games?

  • Wow! I am impressed for a Saturn game or any system in the time period. Although I did not see much city life roaming the streets as they did in the DC version. Also was this supposed to be Shenmue 1 and 2 in one game or multiple games as it was on the DC and part 2 for XBOX? I love the DC version though, so good. Had to settle for part 2 on my old XBOX though... oh well, same great game made by the same great people. I wonder if they had the whole drinking soda and arcade games in the Saturn.

  • Hmm.. makes you woulder what the Saturn could of been.

  • Impressive for Saturn, but I'm glad it ended up on Dreamcast instead.

  • I have a hard time believing that this is running on sega saturn hardware without any expansions. The saturn has terrible texture filtering and even worse polygon count.

I would believe it if the eyes were not so sharp and the text were appearing a disappearing all over the place like they do in every saturn 3d game.

I love the saturn but we're talking 1995 technology, it just want possible on this hardware.

  • @ceramiclion

The framerate would've been terrible for sure.

  • @ceramiclion That is a very good point

  • @ceramiclion Technically it was more like 1990 tech in 1995. All consoles are a bit behind the curve compared to PC tech. Normally the core tech is sorted out 3-5 years before the system comes out. But, either way, Shenmue did start as a Saturn game. There are a lot of Shenmue Saturn vids and images floating around. All are Alpha and Beta level though.

  • @ceramiclion

I read an interview with one of the original programmers from AM2, who said Saturn Shenmue was running on stock hardware, with no additonal expanisons.

but obviously, just judging by the frame rate in the video , you can tell this game is really pushing the Saturn.

  • @lightdark28

Yeah I read that same review and back then I saw this video and thought "cool" but not that I am back playing sega saturn (burning rangers/ Shining force 3) I have to totally call bull on that. I love the saturn and I think it wasn't used to it fullest but that shenmue demo looks like its running on a 1996-97 PC

  • @ceramiclion

The video was an unlockable in Shenmue 2 , where it says it was for the Saturn, why would Sega be lying?

the game seems to feature a higher number of polygons on screen then a game like MGS1, which makes sense, as the Saturn was capable of pushing more polygons than the PS1.

there aren't really any special effects, which Saturn was not good at, wheres Metal Gear has them everywhere.

also the video probably makes the game look smoother then it would have been

  • @lightdark28 Just curious, is the footage unlockable in the Xbox version of Shenmue II?

  • @strykah92

Yeah, only after you beat the game though.

  • @ceramiclion

also, if you notice, everytime there are more then 2 characters on the screen, the frame rate goes down significantly, and the frame rate in general isnt the highest, its obviously lower then games like burning rangers, and this is with AM2, possibly Sega's best team behined it.

that said, I think this would have been one of the best looking games that generation.

again, there is no reason for Sega or that programmer to be lying.

  • I wonder how many discs it would have been on this system, its a shame judging from this trailer they'd basically finished 1 & 2 on the Saturn but had to start over on Dreamcast.

Cant complain too much though,I loved them on the Dreamcast lol

  • goddamn if that woulda came out the saturn woulda been king! those graphics in the mid to late ninties, shit they look amazing for the time period

  • those are just EARLY DREAMCAST stages of development.

  • @hellaisgreece

Newsflash, the "early dreamcast stages of development" are also called the Sega Saturn development attempt... This video is real, the Game was originally developed for several years on the Saturn before Sega realised it wasn't going to make it in time before the Saturn "retired", so they switched development to the dreamcast... but this video is really the Saturn attempt, the graphics alone should tell you it was intended for a 32-bit console.

  • @hellaisgreece

no it is not. it was indeed supposed to released to sega saturn and this video is from Sega Saturn development. Later they decided that sega saturn was not the console that could handle what the company had on its mind and they began the development from the beginning.

Since i suppose you are Greek you could read about Shen Mue on old greek Gamepro magazines ;-)

  • the grapfiks is better then all psx games !!

  • @ShenmueJKD no lighting is...

  • @ShenmueJKD too bad you just can't spell.

  • @ShenmueJKD You really think so? PSX arent ps1. PSX were only released in japan and it plays ps2 games.

  • @TheValkyrieful

I don't think you understand. "PSX" is the system designation for the Playstation 1. It was the shortened version of the system's name, Sony used it themselves. Whatever product you are thinking of, PSX is indeed very much the Playstation 1.

  • @Draknfyre You are both right. It was a codename for PS1, and also the name of late version of the PS2 that had a HDD included, and could receive and record TV and DVDs.

  • @WigglyMalmsteam

Yes, I am aware of the product named PSX. But I was correcting his assertion that was the only thing with the name.

PSX stands for PlayStation X. It was the codename for the system when they broke off the deal with Nintendo, when it was called the "Play Station", and would have been a joint system. Nintendo wanted to do a deal with Philips, Sony didn't. So Nintendo breached the contract, and told Sony to go make the system themselves. They did.

  • This game would have been more appreciated on Saturn because it's a more shocking accomplishment on the underdog system!

At any rate, if they ever complete this whole game and release Shenmue 3, they gotta make a DVD documentary of its long journey to completion. That would be interesting to watch. Haha.

  • SEGA needs to make a new console with Shenmue 3 as its launch title!!!! Fuck Sony Fuck Microsoft!!

  • @segazip Sega is done with hardware, maybe fore Japan only but I doubt they'd do a global release. As for Shenmue it'd probably be on the PS3, I would prefer to use a dreamcast controller if I could though..

  • @MysticTrunksHQ thats possible bud but i still like to think that SEGA are getting there cash up via their rivals by making games for them and milking money out of their consoles. Then boom they release a kick ass console with Shenmue as their ace in the hole. Hey i can dream can't i :)

  • @MysticTrunksHQ

Not likely , if you go a trip down to memorylane , you'll remember that Microsoft bought almost everything sega Dreamcast owned , and Shenmue Franchise belongs to microsoft ever since Dreamcasts Demise

  • I miss SEGA, is there even a reason to play videogames anymore wit out a SEGA SYSTEM ?? hit me up on facebook vb47v @ yahoo dot COM

  • I reckon locked away in Sega's vaults is footage of part 3 running on Saturn...and once in a while someone working late will watch it knowing how many people would kill to see that footage....bastard

  • love it!

  • It actually looks pretty good. This game would've been a great game on the Saturn IMO. And this is just a Beta, I couldn't imagine what the actual game would've looked like. Looks much better than any PSX and N64 game I've seen.

  • Nine years ago, I was 14... The I remember seeing so emotioned this video for the first time... Ahh, I dreamed once and twice and a million time to find the original code of the game and finishing it...

I can't imagine the change that this game could had made on the market... wow..

Actually PS just can't do any closer like this

  • @segadreamer How about getting yourself a copy of MonoDevelop (its a free code editor) and make your own? Its cross platform. Just google it. Its made by Novell, and its awesome
