Poor woman...voice ravaged by cigarettes.

Not just cigarettes, but speaking in that unnaturally high Lucy Ricardo voice (really bad for the vocal chords), and years of projecting her voice to a studio audience (also very bad), and according to fellow performers, singing in Wildcat and elsewhere without using the appropriate techniques required of singers to project to an audience (very damaging to the vocal chords). Excessive talking is another cause, and I imagine all those years of running her show and a studio, she did this as well.

Her voice as Lucy Ricardo was not her real voice. She had to make it higher than it naturally was.
