"Jiří Fischer (born July 31, 1980) is a former professional ice hockey defenceman in the National Hockey League (NHL). Fischer went into cardiac arrest in a November 2005 game, and subsequently retired due to his heart problems. Fischer is currently director of player development for the Detroit Red Wings, the team for whom he played." -Wikipedia
If you listen closely at 1:18 you can hear the Red Wing medics and Pred trainer talking about what happened..."What happened", "He just collapsed", "Thats it just collapsed?!", "Yes!"
Im happy that Jiri was alright, I had a couple of Seizers when I was a kid and trust me it's not fun waking up and having no clue why your in a hospital.
I know how Jiri feels. I was lifting weights in the gym this past January when my heart rate sped up dramatically and wouldnt come down even after I sat . I realized I was in trouble so got in the car and raced home. Told my grandma to call 911 so by the time they came my heart rate went down after like 15 minutes. They took me to the hospital and I stayed overnight. They did the stress test and took x rays but never could tell me why it happened. Ever since I still run everyday but no weights.
As a survivor of a similar incident in 2005 while running on a treadmill, I want to mention that this illustrates the value of exercising in public. If I was running alone in the woods, I would have been found a corpse, but the gym staff helped save my ass and I'm alive today because of them. We all may have hidden genetic heart conditions that can strike out of the blue, so protect yourself by always exercising in public.
@Torgo1969 why stop there? You should sleep in public as well because you can have a heart attack while you sleep. You should only have sex in the hospital parking lot because sex can bring on a heart attack (unless you are banging a nurse or someone who knows CPR) You can die at anytime so you should just enjoy your life.
they reported after this that he suffered a seizure that wasn't correct it was a heart thing he almost died it was a lot more serious then a seizure. Maybe they didn't know at this time and jumped the gun or didn't want to say it was so serious.
I think I commented in here a while ago but this still scares the crap out of me. I remember watching this live what, the Monday before Thanksgiving? Watching them do CPR on him is freaky. So glad he survived.
Shut the fuck up, he wasn't making fun of the team, he was just saying he doesn't like them and that the situation was horrible. Don't try to make an arguement that clearly wasn't needed.
I was just proclaiming a statement about the Detroit Red Wings to sooners164318, I don't understand how you have any part to even criticize what I'm saying. I defended my favourite hockey team because he expressed he strongly disliked them; I just gave him a legitamite reason why a person shouldn't hate them. You have no place in this whatsoever, so I suggest you shut the lip.
i watched this live.... talk about scary.... i still feel bad for jiri, but he has done a good job and taking what life gives him and still stays involved with the Red Wings organization even though he can never play hockey again.
I was home alone watching this i was oly 10, i got terrified and called my brother to tell him i then got tickets to the make up game which the preds one :( GO WINGS
They don't even compare. Theismann's was brutal to watch, but you knew the man would live. When you see someone receiving CPR, altogether different story.
dizman I looked at :15 and saw something, but it took until :55 for the whistle to blow......do you think they would have waited that long to stop play ?? I remember when this happened but never knew the timeline..........
To dizman19: That is an absolutely frightening thing I had not noticed before; the question is: When did Mike Babcock realize the gravity of this...or were the team physicians already attending to him before the whistle?
@AEMoreira81 i read in the paper the day after this happened that after coming off a shift fischer sat down net to brett lebda and collapsed over on him. lebda shook him and he wasn't moving. the team on that side of the bench informed babcock and immediately they called for medic attention and thats when the ref stopped play.
I happened to be on the phone with my wife when this was happening. I told her I had to get off the phone, hung up on her, and was crying even before I knew who it was.
yeahh I'm sure it freaked everyone out but they had to, they made some quick thinking decisions and actions everyone worked together and saved his life. His heart stopped for a little bit and had no pulse if this had happened anywhere else and they didnt all act as quick as they did, he wouldnt have had a chance. thank god they were there.
he was such a great player with a great potential to be a pavel datsyk. he said he may come back someday, but i'm so glad he didn't die. it's kinda like the bryan berard accident, he had a great potential and the injury ruined his career
Yup they would, they would actually keep him alive for a solid time to in order to get him alive to the hospital where they would see what the problem is and fix it. I mean Fischer's case was much worse and a defibrillator saved him, if they had a defibrillator in that arena, Cherepanov would be alive and well by now. Such a sad story, he was only 19 and to hear that negligence was the cause of his death brings tears. RIP Alexei. Hope you're in a happy place.
im glad hes doing better, he played a charity game not too long ago but he'll never be back to play again, it would be too much of a risk and i dont want anything to happen to him! I miss him on the team though :(
Jiri Fischer is still alive he had a cardiac arrest but hes alive tho he wont be returning to the NHL jeez people get ur facts straight he did not die
They couldnt see on the bench who it was, as he was immediately laid down next to the bench. Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond are some of the best local announcers in the league.
when it was all said and done he would have been considered as one of the best players to put on a red wing sweater. it's ashame he didn't get the chance to show that to the world. there is no doubt in my mind we would have at least 1 if not 2 more stanley cups if he still played
Fischer hasn't retired. His contract has been kept by Detroit, and its possib;e for him to play again, although very unlikely. He played a charity hockey game a week or two ago and it was his first time on the ice since this moment.
I saw this footage as part of a Heart and Stroke Canadian TV spot today. I see referee Don Van Massenhoven watching the action of trying to revive Jiri Fischer while Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond describe the action.
