political correctness has ruined television today. In politics or in the service industry you need to respect everyone, but in comedy as long as it is done with tongue in cheek no one should take it seriously, I am a little over weight and have family who are obese, but was not offended. People today are to dam thin skinned, you can put on reruns of ALL in the family but you can't make current shows like that with out putting them on pay channels and charging fees. America has no sense of humor
The fact that John asked Joan "Do you want us to dub it in?" and that JM J. answered for her proves that the celebrities were given the questions/punchlines beforehand.
@funkeekatt The original Hollywood Squares used to have a disclaimer at the opening that informed everyone that the stars were given the questions beforehand so they could work on their bluffs. I doubt the stars were given the answers though.
I never failed to be amazed as these peoples' minds were so obviously in the gutter for most of these, but they would handle them in such a way that the censors had nothing to complain about--much less cut! How I loved the comedy of those days!
Apparently, Joan Rivers' zinger for the "Pandora's Box" question was so funny that: 1) she couldn't bring herself to say it, and 2) Jm J. Bullock had to give a non-sexual answer to bail her out.
@pika23 : He also had an acting career, starring in his own failed detective series, Max Monroe: Loose Cannon (a bad TV version of Lethal Weapon) and after that, co-starring with Harry Anderson in Dave's World.
He was their announcer and the show had trouble finding "stars" to fill 9 squares so they made him a permanent square. He is probably more famous today as the announcer for the Late Late show on CBS with Craig Fergurson.
Even back then Joan Rivers was doing that same shtick that she does today - she pretends that what she's about to say is so funny that she can hardly talk and say what she's thinking. It's as if she's saying to the audience "What I'm about to say is so funny that I can't keep from laughing just thinking about it and so - when I finally do get it out - you will find it as funny as I do." Frankly, I've never cared for that bit she does.
Joan Rivers early '80's album (a taping of her live show), "What Becomes a Semi-Legend Most" involves arguably the funniest stand-up ever. With that said, she's not as funny today.
That blouse that Ilene Graff is seen wearing (at 2:21) is the same one that she wore on that 1987 episode of $100K Pyramid, where her partner, Marilyn Evans, got Bronson Pinchot mixed up with Pierce Brosnan. A clip of that can be seen right here on YT.

I put to punch that horsefaced Joan Rivers in her plastic, Godwin's Law spouting face. Why won't she just die already?

Is that the son of the laconic Will Shriner, who at one point in the 1950s had a nice little game show himself?
7855waldo 2 years ago
Wil Shriner is the twin brother of Kin Shriner, a soap actor. They're the sons of Herb Shriner, a popular entertainer in the '50's.
